Rick decided to attend Ohio University in the late 1970s after his dad learned about the strong reputation (声誉) of the school's communication programs from a friend in Columbus.
Rick and his dad came to Athens for a college visit and met with Archie Greer. Greer was the former station manager at WOUB Public Media and was a professor at Ohio University. He took Rick on a tour of the campus, which included a visit to the WOUB studios in the Radio and TV Building.
“I remember looking inside the radio studio and being mesmerized. Greer told me that I would get to work at WOUB during my first year on campus. Other schools didn't allow this kind of hands-on experience until students were in their junior year. I knew this was where I wanted to go to school,” said Rick. “I fell in love with the campus.”
Rick started working at WOUB and got experience on the radio. “That experience set a course for what happened when I got out of school. What you learn in the classroom is really important, but the reality is that connecting that with the practical experience in real time is a game changer,” said Rick.
Later, Rick was given an internship (实习期) at Blair Television. At the end of the internship, he received an offer to work in Blair's training program, where he started his impressive career (职业). Through his career, Rick held senior level media leadership roles.
“WOUB shaped my career because it gave me a chance to find out what I really loved. It gave me a wide range of experience that I can still call upon today,” said Rick. “When I was getting into the industry, that hands-on experience I got at WOUB meant I had knowledge.”
4. How did Rick's father know about Ohio's communication programs?
A. From a visitor. B. On TV. C. From a friend. D. On the radio.
5. What does the underlined word “mesmerized” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Hopeless. B. Attracted. C. Nervous. D. Respected.
6. Which is more important for one's career according to Rick?
A. Working hard in the classroom. B. Connecting with your coworkers.
C. Repeating what you have learned. D. Putting knowledge into practice.
7. What did Rick want to say in the last paragraph?
A. He was thankful for the experience at WOUB. B. He had a key part in shaping the TV industry.
C. He felt sorry to refuse the offer of WOUB. D. He had shared his experience with others.

Tall palm (棕榈) trees are a signature of Hollywood Boulevard. Their relatives, however, can come in very different shapes and sizes. And it seems that one new-to-science palm probably doesn't attract public attention. This palm is not only short, but also grows its flowers and fruit totally underground.
“We knew immediately that it's a really unusual palm,” says Benedik t Kuhnhäuser, who works at Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in England.
Botanist Paul Chai first noticed the palm in the late 1990s. He found it growing in Borneo, a Southeast Asian island. Over breakfast one day in 2018, Chai told Kuhnhäuser and other botanists about the unusual palm. Later, the team visited Borneo. And to their surprise, they found this underground palm plentiful there.
Growing anything, even flowers and fruits underground, is uncommon for a plant. Although botanists just learned of Borneo's unusual palm, local people knew the palm well. The locals had their own names for the palm. Some even dug it up to eat its fruit. For Kuhnhäuser, this shows the importance of not only working with local people, but also including their knowledge in research papers.
The palm biology is also interesting. Plants often work hard to invite pollinators (传粉者) to their flowers to help their reproduction. Many plants depend on the wind to do it so that the species can survive. So how does a plant pull this off when its flowers and seeds are both underground? This palm may depend partially on self- pollination. Even underground, beetles may be able to move pollen (花粉) between plants. The researchers also saw wild pigs digging up the palm's fruits. They might help spread the palm seeds.
Sidonie Bellot who works with Kuhnhäuser at Kew, now tries to find out how the newly described palm may have developed its underground lifestyle.
8. Who first noticed the short palm in science?
A Borneo. B. Kuhnhäuser. C. Paul Chai. D. Sidonie Bellot.
9. What does Kuhnhäuser probably intend to do about his study?
A. Turn to the locals for help. B. Set up a primary school.
C. Find jobs for the villagers. D. Plant more palms at Kew.
10. What might play a leading role in helping the palm to reproduce?
A. Human beings. B. Wild animals.
C. Strong winds. D. Young leaves.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. A new flower. B. A lonely island.
C. A tasty fruit. D. A unique plant.

“The weather station in Furnace Creek Death Valley, California, reported a temperature of 54. 4℃ on 16 August,” said Clare Nullis, World Meteorological Organization (WMO) spokesperson. “If verified (证实), it would be the highest temperature on Earth since 1931, and the third- hottest temperature ever recorded on the planet. ”
Speaking in Geneva, Ms. Nullis told reporters that WMO had tasked a group of international experts to check the reading by examining the observation (观测), the equipment used, and how it compared to data collected at nearby stations.
According to WMO's data, the hottest temperature ever recorded was in Furnace Creek, Death Valley, California, reaching 56. 7℃ on 10 July 1913. The next highest temperature was set in July 1931 in Kebili, Tunisia, reaching 55℃. Other high temperature records include54℃ in Mitribah, Kuwait on 21 July 2016.
The findings show that the equipment at Furnace Creek meteorological station was in proper working condition at the time of Sunday's observation, Ms. Nullis noted. “Although the full verification process will likely take many months, ” Ms. Nullis said, “ all the markers so far show that this is a fair and acceptable observation. ”
The very hot conditions have come along with a heatwave on the US west coast. The US National Weather Service (NWS) has issued (发布) numerous heat warnings explaining that the high temperatures will continue this week. The NWS in Las Vegas, which covers the Death Valley area, said online, “We are faced with a long- lasting heat event. Another run at 54. 4℃- plus temperatures in Death Valley remains possible.”
The development follows repeated warnings from WMO about high temperatures which are having a bad influence, causing wildfires in places such as forests and grasslands.
12. What is the highest temperature recorded on the earth since 1913?
A. 57. 0℃. B. 56. 7℃. C. 54. 4℃. D. 54. 0℃.
13. What does Ms. Nullis think of the observation in Furnace Creek?
A. It's changeable. B. It's incorrect.
C. It's believable. D. It's unfair.
14. What can we infer about the Death Valley area from the last two paragraphs?
A. It will probably see hotter weather. B. It was badly hit by deadly wildfires.
C. It will face temperature drops this week. D. It was well- known for its good grasslands.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The New Development Follows a Summer Event
B The Hot Weather Has a Bad Influence on Tunisia
C. WMO Carried out a Survey of the Mistaken Report
D. Furnace Creek Temperature is Close to a Record High

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Meow, meow, meow” is what I heard as I walked through the alley (胡同). I got close to the noise, and noticed a tail under a piece of wood. Under the wood was a small black and white cat. I picked him up and realized he must be freezing to death. I hurried home with the cat covered in my jacket.
My new friend received his name Little Bit soon because he was nearly weightless when I held him in my hands. He stood about five inches tall. Little Bit’s small size had a great advantage-befit perfectly in the pocket of my jacket, which made taking him everywhere very easy. He would ride with me on my bike, play in the dirt with me, and catch frog.
Little Bit was the best friend I had ever had. Whenever I was home, he wouldn’t leave my side. He always wanted to play with me. Anytime I had meals, he would sit there patiently until I gave him my leftovers. When I fell asleep at night, he would always curl up (蜷缩) around my head to make sure that I was warm.
Unluckily, as I grew up, my teenage life weakened my relationship with Little Bit. I lived at such a fast pace that I stopped making time for him. My free time was spent with my other friends instead. I would come in the house on my phone and not pay attention to him at all. I often forgot to feed him. let alone walking him or playing with him. His meows became an anger to me sometimes, but it wasn’t his fault because he wanted his best friend back.
One day, there seemed to be something wrong with Little Bit’s body. He lay there and looked at me, weak and tired.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I immediately took him to the vet (兽医).

Sidonie Bellot, who works with Kuhnhäuser at Kew, now tries to find out how the newly described palm may have developed its underground lifestyle.
8. Who first noticed the short palm in science?
A. Borneo. B. Kuhnhäuser. C. Paul Chai. D. Sidonie Bellot.
9. What does Kuhnhäuser probably intend to do about his study?
A. Turn to the locals for help. B. Set up a primary school.
C. Find jobs for the villagers. D. Plant more palms at Kew.
10. What might play a leading role in helping the palm to reproduce?
A. Human beings. B. Wild animals.
C. Strong winds. D. Young leaves.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. A new flower. B. A lonely island.
C. A tasty fruit. D. A unique plant.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. D

【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“So how does a plant pull this off when its flowers and seeds are both underground? This palm may depend partially on self- pollination. Even underground, beetles may be able to move pollen (花粉) between plants. The researchers also saw wild pigs digging up the palm's fruits. They might help spread the palm seeds.(那么,当植物的花朵和种子都在地下时,它是如何做到这一点的呢?

故填who/that。
【45题详解】
介词。句意:这对那些喜欢唱歌但可能害怕被别人听到顾客来说是个好消息。根据空前的being heard 可知,此处用介词by 表示“被”。故填by。

第二节(满分25分)
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;

I immediately took him to the vet (兽医).
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Little Bit’s death made me realize how much he meant to me.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I immediately took him to the vet. Nervous and scared, I waited anxiously as the vet examined him. After what felt like an eternity, the vet returned with a solemn expression. “I’m sorry,” the vet said, “but Little Bit’s health has deteriorated beyond recovery.” My heart sank as tears welled up in my eyes. I held Little Bit close to me, feeling guilty for not being there for him when he needed me the most. The vet allowed me some time alone with him, and I whispered apologies and gentle words, hoping he’d understand how much he meant to me. That night, Little Bit peacefully drifted away in my arms, leaving a void in my heart like never before.
Little Bit’s death made me realize how much he meant to me. In those quiet moments after his passing, I reflected on the joy and companionship he had given me. The small cat who once filled my days with laughter and adventure was no longer physically present, but his memory brought a renewed appreciation for the time we spent together. I regretted the time I neglected him, and promised myself to cherish the present and the relationships that truly mattered. Little Bit’s memory now lives on as a reminder to value love and companionship, teaching me to make time for those who care and to never take their presence for granted. He may have been small, but the impact he had on my life was immeasurable.
