Spanish artist Almudena Romero knew from a young age that she loved plants: “When I was about four or five, my grandma would ask, ‘What do you want for your birthday?’ And I’d say, ‘An olive tree.’”
Now, with her inclusion in exhibitions in London and Paris, she’s showing her unique plant-based art that’s pushing audiences to question their hyper-consumerism while showing that it’s possible to create art in an eco-friendly manner.
In her four-chapter series called “The Pigment Change”, rather than developing photos on photographic paper, she printed them directly onto plants. “I just put a negative (底片) on top of the leaf and leave it to the sunlight, and then the image gets recorded on the leaf,” Romero said. “I also print on living plants using a digital projector, and the plant makes photosynthesis (光合作用) with the light from the projector and records an image.”
Romero, who was raised in Madrid, used to spend holidays on her grandparents’ farm in Valencia, in eastern Spain. “When you grow close to nature, it becomes a really important thing in your life,” she said. “Plants for me are important, partly because of my family and because as a photographic material, they’re impressive in quality,”
But she admitted that her eco-friendly technique wouldn’t work for all artists. “It produces short-lived pieces, so it’s a lot more difficult to be financially sustainable when your art is short-lived, but I guess it’s also depending on how you understand life and what you want to do with your practice,” she explained. “Plants have been around for way longer than us on the planet and they have succeeded in doing that without causing any extinction.”
4 What can we know about Romero from the first paragraph?
A. She was raised by her grandma. B. She has lived in the countryside for five years.
C. She was questioned by audiences. D. She has been fond of plants since childhood.
5. What are Romero’s artworks intended for?
A. Including like-minded people. B. Showing technological advances.
C. Promoting eco-friendly values. D. Limiting the use of digital devices.
6. Which word best describes the process of Romero creating artworks?
A. Innovative. B. Stressful. C. Fast-paced. D. Intensive.
7. What does Romero imply about her technique in the last paragraph?
A It has gained popularity among all artists. B. It’s subject to artists’ view of life and goals.
C. It’s an effective solution to climate change. D. It makes it easy to be financially sustainable.

Through conversations and hands-on learning opportunities, nearly 250 youths from across New York state learned about different career paths at the annual 4-H Career Explorations Conference, hosted by Cornell and New York State 4-H on campus during June 26 — 28.
“I’m here because I want to excite my interests in different careers like biomedical engineering, since I plan on pursuing a career in the future in engineering,” said Jada Murphy, a senior high school student from Haverstraw, New York, “This event has helped me get a feel of what my surroundings and learning environment might be like.”
Cornell teaching staff and graduate students led programs in two tracks. In the University U track, for those in grades 8 and 9, students rotated(轮班) through workshops in fields such as mental health, climate-smart farming, fitness and nutrition. In the Focus for Teens track, students entering grades 10 through 12 selected one of 12 programs in fields such as media design, psychology research and food science.
In Emerson Hall, 15 young people participated in “Animal Trackers: A Tech Expedition”, where they learned how researchers monitor the movements of domestic and wild animals, led by Susan Hoskins, director of the Institute for Resource Information Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
“We explored many ways animal movement is seen and recorded, highlighting geospatial connections,” Hoskins said, “Watching with our own eyes, using GPS location technology, creating digital maps and envisioning(展望) a positive digital future were all on the agenda.”
During the closing ceremony, youth representatives from each program reflected back on their experience, detailing what was the most impactful part of each program. Many said they are enthusiastic to return to the event again next year.
8. Why did Murphy attend the 4-H event?
A. To improve her language skills. B. To look for a well-paid job.
C. To explore potential career options, D. To greet college freshmen.
9. How are the students divided into different tracks?
A. By age. B. By major. C. By grade. D. By interest.
10. What can we infer about the program in Emerson Hall?

When a person views a photograph of a hairy snake in a lab experiment, scientists usually see markers of increased electrical activity deep in that person’s brain, in a region called the periaqueductal gray(PAG). When a caged mouse smells a cat and freezes, scientists observe similar changes in the mouse’s PAG. What’s the obvious conclusion? The PAG controls fight-or-flight responses of animals in threatening situations.
But what if brains don’t have dedicated(专用的) circuits for fighting and fleeing? People clearly experience threats, but is threat detection really a primary mode of the brain with its own neural(神经的) circuitry? A body of recent evidence from my lab suggests that we don’t go through life constantly detecting threats and reacting with flight-or-fight circuits. Actually, brains operate mainly by prediction, not reaction. All brains constantly anticipate the needs of the body and attempt to meet those needs before they arise. They seek to reduce uncertainty to survive in circumstances that are only partially predictable.
Like every other animal, you have basic needs. To eat, drink and deal with other imperatives of life, you must move about in an ever-changing world populated with other living creatures. In an uncertain situation, your brain must gather multiple predictions with multiple action plans and maintain them for an extended time through neural activity and other brain functions.
Uncertainty is a normal condition of life, but these days, with social media and round-the-clock news coverage, it sometimes bombards(轰炸) us. At every moment, there’s a crisis somewhere in the world; wars, natural disasters and other issues. Too much uncertainty can leave you feeling anxious and worn out. But these feelings don’t emerge from overtaxed fight-or-flight circuits. They may just mean your brain is trying hard to tackle something uncertain.
12. Why does the author mention the caged mouse?
A. To correct a mistake. B. To introduce a photo.
C. To make a comparison. D. To draw a conclusion.
13. What does the author think of the fight-or-flight idea?
A. It accounts for a primary mode of the brain, B. It undervalues the brain’s predictive power.
C. It best explains the animals’ neural activity. D. It can keep humans’ bad manners in check.
14. What does the underlined word “imperatives” in paragraph3 refer to?
A. Something necessary. B. Something popular.
C. Outdated theories. D. Emotional parts.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Our Mind Reflects the Changes in the World
B. Round-the-clock News Coverage Is Dangerous
C. PAG Protects Animals in Threatening Situations
D. A Core Task of the Brain Is to Reduce Uncertainty

Are you refused when you ask for help from others? The following simple tips will increase people’s acceptance of your request for help.
Demonstrate that you’ve tried to help yourself. People are more willing to help those who have attempted to help themselves first. When asking for help briefly explain what you’ve tried independently. ____16____. Imagine you’re giving a key point list — and be specific.
____17____. People want to help those who they’re sure will act on the help or ad vice offered. Therefore, when you get help from someone who you expect you’ll ask for help again, make sure they’ re aware that you’ve acted on their prior advice — and appreciated it.
Consider the timing of your request. Here’s a personal example. My family love to ask me for tech support. So I started a policy that tech support requests could only be made from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm each day. ____18____. This system works great for everyone.
Don’t make someone guess what you want. When asking for help, make sure the person knows what you want. The more you practice asking for help in these situations, the easier it will get. Sometimes people are shy about offering help, or are just stuck in their own head and don’t think of offering. ____19____ By asking someone for help, you’re actually giving that person the opportunity to boost their mood.
Make your requests using multiple channels. In customer-service situations, there are multiple options to ask for help. It might be best to use the phone, live chat, secure messaging, a face-to-face appointment or Twitter, depending on the situation. It especially helps not to be scared of using the phone if it is the best option for a particular concern. ____20____.
A. Get to the point fast
B. Make a smaller request
C. That way, my workday isn’t disturbed
D. If you don’t succeed at first, hang up and try again
E. You have to try several of them to get what you need
F. Show that you’ve acted on the person’s advice previously
G. Providing help to strangers typically boosts the mood of the helper

I was addicted to TV. I knew some would say I should just be able to turn it off, but it called to me, “Cindy, just come and watch the morning news. You have to know what’s going on in the world.” An hour later, when I should be doing dishes or a million other things, I was attracted by the promos (电视预告) and I had to watch the next show. “Just a little,”I told myself. But another hour went by.
Finally, I made myself turn it off and got busy with the housework. I worked for an hour or two, and it was time for lunch. Who wanted to eat lunch alone? I turned on the TV for a little “company". I watched some reruns of one of my favorites and enjoyed my hour-long lunch break with my “friends”.
Then I decided to keep the TV on just for noise, while I continued with my list of housework. I brought things into the living room so I could listen while I worked, but once again, TV was so attractive that work was only done during the commercials.
Suddenly, it was time to make dinner. I still kept the TV on while I cooked, because the five o’clock news had come on and I needed to stay informed. In the evening, I even forced myself to stay up and watch the last show.
I had been used to living like this until one day when my husband got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and found me still watching TV. He looked at the clock and was surprised to find that it was three o’clock in the morning. He asked me to go to bed immediately, but lying in bed, I found I was extremely excited and could not sleep at all.
The next day, my husband had a talk with me. He said that my original interests, including painting and reading, had been completely replaced by watching TV, which was not a good thing. What’s more, I barely even contacted my friends any longer. He reminded me to change my way of life.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
I started to reflect on myself.

4. What can we know about Romero from the first paragraph?
A. She was raised by her grandma. B. She has lived in the countryside for five years.
C. She was questioned by audiences. D. She has been fond of plants since childhood.
5. What are Romero’s artworks intended for?
A. Including like-minded people. B. Showing technological advances.
C. Promoting eco-friendly values. D. Limiting the use of digital devices.
6. Which word best describes the process of Romero creating artworks?
A. Innovative. B. Stressful. C. Fast-paced. D. Intensive.
7. What does Romero imply about her technique in the last paragraph?
A. It has gained popularity among all artists. B. It’s subject to artists’ view of life and goals.
C It’s an effective solution to climate change. D. It makes it easy to be financially sustainable.
D 5. C 6. A 7. B

D A Core Task of the Brain Is to Reduce Uncertainty
D 13. B 14. A 15. D
根据第一段中的“When a person views a photograph of a hairy snake in a lab experiment, scientists usually see markers of increased electrical activity deep in that person’s brain, in a region called the periaqueductal gray(PAG). When a caged mouse smells a cat and freezes, scientists observe similar changes in the mouse’s PAG. What’s the obvious conclusion?
根据第二段中的“A body of recent evidence from my lab suggests that we don’t go through life constantly detecting threats and reacting with flight-or-fight circuits. Actually, brains operate mainly by prediction, not reaction.(我实验室最近的大量证据表明,我们一生中不会不断地检测威胁,并做出战斗或逃跑反应。实际上,大脑主要通过预测而不是反应来运作。)”可推断,作者认为应急机制的观点低估了大脑的预判能力。故选B。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词前面的“Like every other animal, you have basic needs.(像其他动物一样,你有基本的需求。)” 故选A。
通读全文, 尤其是第二段中的“They seek to reduce uncertainty to survive in circumstances that are only partially predictable.(它们试图减少不确定性,以便在只能不完全预测的情况下生存。)”
Are you refused when you ask for help from others? The following simple tips will increase people’s acceptance of your request for help.
Demonstrate that you’ve tried to help yourself. People are more willing to help those who have attempted to help themselves first. When asking for help, briefly explain what you’ve tried independently.
D. If you don’t succeed at first hang up and try again
E. You have to try several of them to get what you need
F. Show that you’ve acted on the person’s advice previously
G. Providing help to strangers typically boosts the mood of the helper
A 17. F 18. C 19. G 20. E

故填an。

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
I started to reflect on myself.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
It was time to get rid of watching TV.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I started to reflect on myself. In fact, I also felt tired from a day of TV watching. I calculated how long I spent watching TV a day. The TV was on in our house for about fifteen hours a day, that’s to say, 105 hours a week, 450 hours a month, 5,400 hours a year! Gone were the days of reading, painting, taking walks, or talking to old friends on the phone. All were put off until the next commercial or the end of the show.
It was time to get rid of watching TV. I was trying to disconnect from TV by selling it. Fortunately, my husband agreed to this drastic measure. There would certainly be a big void in my life now that the TV was gone. Whatever would I do to fill it? I thought about the friends I had ignored and the things I loved to do and never seemed to have time before. Well, now I got the time.
