23-year-old Rachna Kumari is a soft-spoken young woman selling unique wheat stalk paintings (麦秆画) handmade by herself. Every morning, even before her mother awakens, she finishes cooking and cleaning before cycling 5km to run her shop alone. Over the past year, she has sold about 200 of her paintings, 50 of which were bought since she opened her shop in April this year.
However, back in 2019, Rachna had almost given up on life after having to leave school due to family’s financial problems. She became depressed, thinking she would have to spend the rest of her days doing household chores.
Around this time, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) came into the picture with Project Lehar, started to provide vocational training, entrepreneurship (创业), and life skills courses to young women. Project Lehar, run by AKF in partnership with The King’s Trust International, enables girls and young women from disadvantaged backgrounds to rediscover and realise their potential. This was a good opportunity for Rachna to not just continue her studies but also to convince her parents to drop her marriage plans.
After she was admitted into college through Project Lehar, she was also given some suggestions on entrepreneurial and career prospects. One such session on wheat stalk painting made her fall in love with this traditional art form of Bahraich and her creativity was brought out.
Now she is economically independent by selling wheat stalk paintings. However, Rachna is not resting on her achievements. Her shop also doubles up as a training centre where other girls from disadvantaged backgrounds like her who want to stand on their feet get a second chance to change their lives like she did.
While teaching these enthusiastic young girls is a joyful experience, what gives Rachna more pride is being chosen as a wheat stalk painting trainer by the foundation. From being a trainee under this project to now becoming its paid trainer, Rachna’s life has come full circle.
24. What once left Rachna in low spirits?
A. Losing her favorite job. B. Dropping out of school.
C. Riding to her shop alone. D. Doing household chores.
25. How did Rachna benefit from Project Lehar?
A. She received some donations from it. B. She had a new attitude toward marriage.
C. She was sponsored to open her own shop. D. She got the chance to continue her studies.
26. Which words can be used to describe Rachna?
A. Talented and modest. B. Outgoing and successful.
C. Wealthy and independent. D. Hard-working and creative.
27. What brings Rachna more sense of achievement?
A. Becoming a first-rate woman artist. B. Giving financial help to disadvantaged girls.
C. Being selected as a wheat stalk painting trainer. D. Setting up the famous Project Lehar independently.

Lacking money makes people focus on the present — but lacking water makes them plan for the future. The human brain is sensitive to scarcity (稀缺). Take money, for example: when people play a game that makes some players immediately wealthier or poorer, those who lose money start making decisions that result in their being better off now but worse off later. One potential explanation for this tendency is that the sense of not having enough of what we need makes it harder for us to focus and plan.
In one experiment, college students read articles about a severe water shortage or plenty of water due to increased rainfall. Those exposed to scarcity thoughts showed a heightened focus on the future, agreeing more with saving resources and planning ahead. Contrarily, those who read about a water surplus prioritized living in the present and were less concerned about saving.
Moreover, we compared attitudes in two Iranian cities, Shiraz and Yazd, which differ greatly in water availability. Residents of water-scarce Yazd valued “long-term purpose” more than those in water-abundant Shiraz.
Expanding our investigation globally, we found individuals from historically water-scarce nations tended to place a greater emphasis on saving and planning for the future. For example, in Europe, people in water-rich Iceland thought less about the future, whereas those in dry Spain thought more about the future.
Moreover, countries’ history of water scarcity seemed related to cultural differences in a way that more obvious factors didn’t. For example, income per capita (人均) did not explain differences across cultures. And although corruption (腐败) might make it hard for people to think about the future, it was not a strong predictor, either. You might guess that people think about the future more in places where they tend to live longer, but astonishingly, national life expectancy was not as strong a predictor as water scarcity.
Our work suggests that as many places dry up, global warming could reshape how people think, pushing entire communities toward more cautious, environmentally friendly, future-oriented behavior. Water scarcity could be uniquely powerful motivation for us to prepare for and respond to a warmer world.
28. What does the example of game-playing in Paragraph 1 illustrate?
A. Scarcity results in shortsighted decisions. B. Game-playing needs a higher focus.
C. Game players become rich overnight. D. Losing money makes us plan for the future.
29. Who might have a long-term purpose?
A. People living in Shiraz. B. People in dry Spain.
C. People focusing on the past. D. People reading about water surplus.
30. What most likely accounts for cultural differences?
A. Corruption. B. Income per capita.
C. A sense of water scarcity. D. National life expectancy.
31. What will water scarcity inspire people to do?
A. Respond to climate change actively. B. Change our attitude toward family.
C. Make people care about community. D. Be more cautious about their relationship.

Last summer, two nineteenth-century cottages were rescued from remote farm fields in Montana, to be moved to an Art Deco building in San Francisco. The houses were made of wood. These cottages once housed early settlers as they worked the dry Montana soil; now they hold Twitter engineers.
The cottages could be an example of the industry’s odd love for “low technology”, a concept associated with the natural world, and with old-school craftsmanship that exists long before the Internet era. Low technology is not virtual — so, to take advantage of it, Internet companies have had to get creative. The rescued wood cottages, fitted by hand in the late eighteen-hundreds, are an obvious example, but Twitter’s designs lie on the extreme end. Other companies are using a broader interpretation of low technology that focuses on nature.
Amazon is building three glass spheres filled with trees so that employees can “work and socialize in a more natural, park-like setting.” At Google’s office, an entire floor is carpeted in grass. Facebook’s second Menlo Park campus will have a rooftop park with a walking path.
Olle Lundberg, the founder of Lundberg Design, has worked with many tech companies over the years. “We have lost the connections to the maker in our lives, and our tech engineers are the ones who feel impoverished (贫乏的), because they’re surrounded by the digital world,” he says. “They’re looking for a way to regain their individual identity, and we’ve found that introducing real crafts is one way to do that.”
This craft-based theory is rooted in history. William Morris, the English artist and writer, turned back to pre-industrial arts in the eighteen-sixties, just after Industrial Revolution. The Arts and Crafts movement defined itself against machines. “Without creative human occupation, people became disconnected from life,” Morris said.
Research has shown that natural environments can restore our mental abilities. In Japan, patients are encouraged to “forest-bathe”, taking walks through woods to lower their blood pressure.
These health benefits apply to the workplace as well. Rachel Kaplvin, a professor of environmental psychology, has spent years researching the restorative effects of natural environments. Her research found that workers with access to nature at the office — even simple views of trees and flowers — felt their jobs were less stressful and more satisfying. If low-tech offices can potentially nourish the brains and improve the mental health of employees then, fine, bring on the cottages.
32. Why did the writer mention the two nineteenth-century cottages?
A. To show that Twitter is having a hard time.
B. To show that old cottages are in need of protection.
C. To show that early settlers once suffered from a dry climate in Montana.
D. To show that Internet companies have rediscovered the benefits of low technology.
33. Low technology is regarded as something that _____.
A. is related to nature B. is out of date today
C. consumes too much energy D. exists in the virtual world
34. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 5?
A. Human beings have destroyed many pre-industrial arts.
B. Human beings have a tradition of valuing arts and crafts.
C. Human beings can become intelligent by learning history.
D. Human beings can regain their individual identity by using machines.
35. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Past Glories, Future Dreams
B. The Virtual World, the Real Challenge
C. High-tech Companies, Low-tech Offices
D. The More Craftsmanship, the Less Creativity

Dressed in my white polo shirt and black pants, I was ready for my first day as a fashion’s worker. I had been working on a register for over two weeks when they decided that I was ready to work as a shop assistant.
I remember the feeling of excitement because this was something new, and nervousness because I didn’t know what was going to happen. I didn’t even know whom I would be working with. So many thoughts came floating into my head as I walked from my car to the store.
“What if the customers don’t like me? What if I can’t handle this job? Will I remember everything?” With my mind filled with all these what ifs, I walked back to the break room and put my purse in my locker. Then, with my shaking hands and upset stomach, I walked back to the front of the store and met with Theresa at the service desk where Theresa greeted me warmly.
“We are going to have you work with Vicki today. She is a friendly lady and takes charge of the men’s department. She can teach you how to communicate with the customers. So let’s take a walk back to the men’s department, and she can get you trained in,” Theresa said.
“Okay,” I replied with nervousness.
Walking for what seemed like a long time, we finally reached our destination. Vicki, a young lady in her early thirties, came bouncing out to receive us with a light- hearted walk and a brilliant white smile. We must have caught her a little off guard because she stopped, stared at us for a moment, and said, “Hi Theresa!”
“Hey, Vicki! I’d like you to meet Kayli. She is going to be working with you for the next couple of weeks.” Theresa introduced me to this young lady.
“Hi, Kayli,” she replied with more enthusiasm than I had expected.
“Well, I’ll leave it up to you, Vicki.” Theresa happily replied, then turned and walked away, leaving Vicki and me standing there.

M: Here you come finally, Julia. We are worried about you. Where have you been all these days?
W: Thank you, Allen. I’m fine. I’ve been helping my aunt on her farm.
M: But you look upset. What happened?
W: I couldn’t join the international voluntary team to Morocco.
M: It’s a pity. How come?
W: My father doesn’t agree. He thinks going abroad is too dangerous. He once went to Tanzania in eastern Africa on business, where he experienced something unpleasant. I’ve explained to him that the situation was not like what he thought, but he insisted on his opinion and asked me to travel only across New Zealand. We almost argued over that.
M: I can understand his worry. He just cares about you too much. How about your mother?
W: My mother stands by me. She thinks what I want to do is worth my while. But she fails to persuade my father to give up his idea.
M: Then what do you plan to do this holiday?
W: I don’t know. What’s your advice?
M: If I were you, I would learn something new like programming. Last year, I learned driving during the holiday. The swimming course was also part of my plan, but there was not enough time.
W: Thank you, Allen. I’ll consider.

This summer I joined a two-week summer camp in China. The camp was for language learning. The other campers and I learned Chinese through activities like storytelling and role-playing. In the first week, to use the vocabulary we’d learned in real-world situations, we were encouraged to buy vegetables at the market and book entry tickets to the museum. During the second week, the activities were richer. We attended classes in traditional Chinese art in the first three days, such as fan painting, paper cutting and Chinese calligraphy. It was so cool to drive out the summer heat with a fan painted by myself. Then the following day we went to eat traditional food there. We also spent two days visiting some places of interest, learning about the local history of the area. In the last day of our camp, we had a sharing session, during which we were asked to describe the part we like best of our camp. It was a hard choice. For me, every activity was fun—Chinese culture, the food and people all impressed me deeply. I hope to come again in the future.

25 How did Rachna benefit from Project Lehar?

A 29. B 30. C 31. A

D
D 33. A 34. B 35. C

根据前文“I am often struck by the thought that there is this huge life enhancing potential available to everyone on the planet that maybe we don’t always take great advantage of. (我经常被这样一个想法所震撼,这个星球上的每个人都有巨大的提升生命的潜力,也许我们并不总是能很好地利用它。)”和后文“Through it, we help ourselves and others by sharing the things we have learned. (通过它,我们通过分享我们所学到的东西来帮助自己和他人。)”可知,此处提到了一种巨大的潜力,下文提到巨大潜力的作用,因此推断空处解释这种潜力是什么。A项“它是我们教导他人的能力。”符合语境,指出这种潜力是我们教导他人的能力。通过这种能力我们可以分享我们所学到的东西,故选A。
【37题详解】
根据后文“I have been teaching and preaching from the time when it occurred to me that I had some really great stuff to share. But, strangely, it took me a long time to really identify what it was that I was doing, at least enough to put it into words. ( 我一直在教导和讲道,这时候我想到我有一些真正伟大的东西要分享的时候。但是,奇怪的是,我花了很长时间才真正确定我在做什么,至少足以用语言表达出来。)”可知,本段讲述作者运用这种能力影响他人以及自己获得感悟。因此推断C项“多年来,这样做一直在改变和帮助我的生活。”符合语境,说明这种能力对作者的生活产生了积极影响。故选C。
【38题详解】
根据前文“So, I’d like to share with you my thoughts on why teaching and sharing your knowledge can be so important to you as well as to the people around you. ( 所以,我想和你分享我的想法,为什么教学和分享你的知识对你和你周围的人都是如此重要。)”可知,此处讲述作者想分享为什么教学和分享知识对自己和他人都很重要,接下来应该是让读者思考并实践。D项“请深入思考这个问题,然后尽你所能地把它付诸实践”符合语境,呼应前文并引导读者思考和实践。承接下文“See whether it profoundly enhanced so many parts of your life, even in the areas you’re already super successful in. (看看它是否深刻地改善了你生活的许多方面,即使是在你已经非常成功的领域。)”故选D。
【39题详解】
根据前文“Any goal, habit, human quality, or desire that you start preaching, teaching, or pontificating about will automatically, and almost without effort, push you to do more of it yourself. (任何目标、习惯、人性或欲望,只要你开始说教、教导或自以为是,就会自动地、几乎毫不费力地推动你自己去做更多的事情。)”可知,这里提到教授会推动自己去做更多的事情,接下来应该是进一步解释这种推动力。F项“你分享的知识,无论是口头的还是书面的,都像一剂心灵的真理药。”符合语境,说明分享的知识对心灵的影响。故选F。
【40题详解】
根据前文“What knowledge do you have, or have you learned that you want to be reminded and pushed to improve in your life? If you want to do better at it, there will be plenty of others that will want to do better at it too.

Listening to her words, I started to relax and had more confidence in myself.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
In front of a stranger alone, my nervousness grew. I had a smile on my face. But as a matter of fact, I had butterflies in my stomach. I expected the usual uncomfortable silence that always happens when two strangers meet and are supposed to be friends right away, but I was wrong. Vicki was very comfortable to be around and easy to talk to. She felt my nervousness. “Take it easy. Just be yourself and you will do a good job,” Vicki smiled at me. Then she explained different styles and trends, and how to assist customers.
Listening to her words, I started to relax and had more confidence in myself. I recited the information of many clothes and couldn’t wait to serve the customer on my own. That day I received ten customers and all of them showed satisfaction with me. I regained my confidence and no longer doubted myself. That day, I ended up learning more than just the tasks of a fashion’s worker. I learned to communicate, and to just be myself. Vicki has taught me that it was okay to be myself, and for that, I will be forever grateful.
