I didn’t talk with anyone but sat alone there. One of the students Mary thought I looked down upon people. So she always hit me by accident or on purpose but I didn’t catch her in my eyes. One day on the playground, as Mary was about to close in on me again, I ran away. Angry, she had been running full-speed toward me. She didn’t expect my sudden stop and ran into me and fell to the ground. A group of kids standing nearby laughed. She got up and began to hit me. I couldn’t stand any more. Then we made a big fight. Certainly, we were taken to the headmaster’s office. He asked us to fill a form. It reads, “Gardening punishment for one week.” “I guess we should get a two-week gardening punishment,” Mary said to herself. We should take care of the flowers and plants in the school garden together. At first, it felt embarrassed, like working with your enemy. But as we started working side by side, something unexpected happened. We began to talk, uncomfortably at first, but then more freely. As we watered the plants and pulled out weeds (杂草), we shared stories about our families, our hobbies, even our fights. It turned out we both loved to read fiction novels and were interested in space. One week went by fast, and I made the first friend in the-new school. Perhaps it was the flowers in the school garden that taught us the true meaning of forgiveness (宽恕) and friendship. I also learned to get along with other students, and also continue to join the whole class. 13. In the past, some food products like salt, sugar or flour were usually sold loose (散的) and taken home in bags. Thanks to modern technology, today a large number of packaged (包装) food products are seen in the market. With the help of good packaging, canned products can be kept well, transported and sold. For fragile (易碎的) foods—such as fruit, tomatoes and cakes—they are packaged for the perfect condition. Packaging may also cause several problems. First, packaging uses a lot of world’s resources (资源). Hundreds of thousands of trees are cut down to provide paper and cardboard. And every year, millions of dollars are spent on packaging by food companies to catch the eye of consumers. As a result, people are likely to buy more food than they usually need, which may hit their wallets. The developed world is responsible for most of the waste and has realized that it is an important problem. What can we do? Maybe we can ask companies to use recyclable materials for packaging. We hope to find better ways in the future. 41. How did people take loose products home in the past? ________________________ 42. Why are fragile foods packaged? ________________________ 43. How much is spent on packaging by food companies every year? ________________________ 44. Do you like good packaging products? Why or why not? ________________________ 【答案】41.
