It was a bright sunny morning, a group of boys wanted to play a football match. All of them decided to bring some objects for playing. One boy brought a football, another boy brought the whistle. They also brought goalkeeper gloves, etc.
When everyone was on the ground and started picking the teams, they thought the first thing they needed to do was to choose a team leader. Then they decided to start playing the game with all the objects they brought, and the person who had brought the most useful object should be the team leader.
The game started. The first thing they replaced(代替)was the whistle because they thought the referee could shout instead of whistling. Then the goalkeeper took off the gloves and started playing with bare hands. Then they replaced the goalpost with a couple of boxes on each side. And finally, they replaced football with an old cola can. It seemed all the objects could be replaced, and it was hard for them to choose the leader. While the boys were playing the game, a father and son saw them playing. The father said to his son, “Son, see the boys, and learn from them. Without football, they were trying to play, even though they will never improve their skills by playing with those objects”.
One of the boys nearby heard the father and told the others. Then they knew that they were not playing the proper football match even though they had all the necessary objects. They also realized that because of their ego and individual pride, they were not enjoying the game. The boys then decided to use all the objects they brought and have no leader.
The match started again, the boys worked as a team and were enjoying the game, at the same time, improving their skills.
In life, everyone has a personal goal that we want to get. But when we work as a team, the team’s goal is more important than their own goals. In teamwork, it’s important to set aside our pride and ego. Instead, we should work towards the team’s goal.
36. Before playing the football match, the boys thought first they needed to________.
A. choose a team leader B. find a better place
C. bring a whistle D. improve their skills
37. After hearing what the father said, the boys ________.
A. threw away all the objects
B. decided to work as a team
C. invited the father and son to play
D. wanted to learn from the referee
38. How did the boys feel at last?
A. Thankful. B. Sorry.
C. Free. D. Enjoyable.

Like most people, you’ve probably never given your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, a second thought, unless you have diabetes (糖尿病). Diabetes is a disease that occurs(出现) when your blood glucose is too high. But researchers now know that whether or not you have diabetes, eating too much can make your blood glucose go up and down. Also, it can increase the danger of heart disease. It may be even bad for your memory.
This realization has greatly changed the way we understand food and health. Luckily, none of these things happen overnight, and even small changes in the food you eat every day can start you on a healthier path.
When you are hungry, do you reach for a chocolate cake or a box of biscuits? These “fast-acting” foods are handy and they take no time at all to dissolve (溶化) in your stomach. Then they race into your blood, running through your body with blood glucose. They can provide energy quickly but the effect doesn’t last long, leaving you feeling hungry again. As a result, your blood glucose will run out of control.
It’s no wonder most of us have less energy than we’d like and feel tired too often. It’s also no wonder that most of us weigh more than we want to. Yes, eating too much and exercising too little are main reasons, and ever changing blood glucose will send you shopping for bigger jeans.
For most of us, even when our blood glucose goes up and down after a large meal, our body can bring it back to normal (常态) in a few hours. Only people with untreated diabetes have blood glucose levels that stay quite high most of the time.
For a long time, doctors thought that only these people needed to take care of their blood glucose levels. Now, we know that even in the healthy people, high levels after meals can damage (损坏) the body, even if it never causes diabetes.
39. After eating too much, our blood glucose will ________.
A. keep unchanged B. stay on high levels
C. go up and down D. come back to normal
40. What are fast-acting foods?
A. They are easy to get and can provide energy quickly.
B. They make your blood glucose stay in control.
C. They are unhealthy and we can’t eat them at all.
D. They can make you feel hungry less often.
41. What can you learn from the passage?
A. People without diabetes needn’t care about the food they take in.
B. People should make great changes to start a healthier path.
C. People should care about their blood glucose to keep healthy.
D. People weigh more than they want because they exercise too much.
42. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To show people the possible effects of having fast-acting foods often.
B. To help people realize the importance of keeping blood glucose normal.
C. To introduce the damage resulted from diabetes and high blood glucose.
D. To warn people of the danger of having diabetes and heart disease.
D
A friend of mine, in response to a conversation about the fairness(公平) and unfairness of life, asked me the question, “Who said life was going to be fair, or that it was even meant to be fair?” Her question was a good one. It reminded me of something I was taught as a youngster: Life isn’t fair. It’s a bummer, which is not easy to accept, but absolutely true.
One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for others. We keep thinking that life should be fair, or that someday it will be. However, the truth is life is not and it won’t be fair.
One of the nice things about admitting(承认) this fact is that it stops us from feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with all we have. We know it’s not “life’s job” to make everything perfect. It’s our own difficulty to overcome. Admitting this fact also stops us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt a different hand. Everyone has their own strengths and problems in the process of growing up, facing the reality and making decisions. And everyone has those times that they feel cheated or unfairly treated.
The fact that life isn’t fair doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do everything in our power to improve our own lives or the world as a whole. Instead, it suggests that we should. When we don’t recognize or admit that life isn’t fair, we tend to feel pity (可怜) for others and for ourselves. Pity is a self-defeating (自我挫败的) emotion that does nothing good for anyone. It only makes people feel worse than they already do. When we do recognize that life isn’t fair, however, we feel compassion for others and for ourselves. And compassion is a heartfelt emotion that delivers loving-kindness to everyone it touches.
The next time you find yourself thinking about the unfair world, try reminding yourself of this very basic fact. You may be surprised that it can make you take helpful actions and push you out of self-pity.
43. The underlined word “bummer” in the first paragraph probably means ________.
A. good chance B. upset fact
C. hard choice D. important lesson
44. According to the passage, who understands unfairness best?
A. Lily stops feeling sorry and begins to do the very best she can.
B. Sam feels angry about unfairness and keeps talking about it.
C. Amy thinks life will be fair someday through her efforts.
D. Derek keeps thinking life is unfair and feels sad about it.
45. The writer probably agrees that ________.
A. emotions like compassion make us feel worse
B. it’s our life’s job to make everything perfect
C. unfairness stops us from taking helpful actions
D. we should admit that life isn’t and it won’t be fair
46. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Why is life unfair?
B. Should we accept life is unfair?
C. Can we make life fair?
D. What does fairness mean?

Leaving his smartphone and computer at home, Yang Hao, a 32-year-old doctoral student in Shanxi province, took a trip in the old-fashioned way last year. Over the course of 134 days, he visited 68 countries and cities in 24 provinces and regions across China, and read 40 books.
His journey was inspired(启发) by a screen time notification(通知) from his iPhone that he was spending almost seven hours a day on his phone each day. He was shocked. Then he had an idea of leaving his phone and computer at home to face the challenges of a digital-free(无数字化的) life.
Last Nov 27, Yang set off from Taiyuan with a large backpack carrying clothing, two cameras, maps, his ID card, bank cards, cash, pens, a notebook, and three books. During the trip, Yang experienced lots of challenges. Without a phone, he couldn’t book a hotel online. He wasn’t allowed in the Hubei Provincial Museum because the museum required reservation in advance and he couldn’t reserve a ticket online. There were lots of situations like this.
On the other hand, leaving his phone and computer behind, Yang got really rewarding experiences. Without travel bloggers, books and museums became his guide. In Hunan province, Yang retraced(重走) Shen Congwen’s trip in Xiangxi Sanji by boat along the Yuanjiang River about 90 years ago. After reading historical documents, Yang followed those explorers’ footsteps and visited Taklimakan Desert in southern Xinjiang. Also, because writing letters was his only way to keep in touch with family and friends, he rediscovered the pleasure of writing letters.
Yang returned home on April 9. He didn’t want to turn his phone or computer on, because he got used to a quiet, peaceful life without the Internet.
His old life soon returned. But now, Yang keeps a degree of distance(一定的距离) from the Internet. He’s busy making a documentary about his journey. “I hope to offer a different perspective on seeing the world, whether on screen or through my words,” Yang says.
47. How did he take the trip last year?
