B In medical school and throughout his career as a neonatologist, William Cashore was often asked to read and correct others’ work. Little did they know that he was a spelling champion, with a trophy at home to prove it. Cashore won the Scripps National Spelling Bee in 1954 at age 14. Now 84, he’s the oldest living champion of the contest, which dates back to 1925. As contestants from this year’s competition headed home, he reflected on his experience and the effect it had on him. Cashore credits his parents for helping him prepare for his trip to Washington, D.C., for the spelling bee. His mother was an elementary school teacher and his father was a lab technician with a talent for taking words apart and putting them back together. When the field narrowed to two competitors, the other boy misspelle “uncinate”, which means bent like a hook. Cashore spelled it correctly, then clinched the title with the word “transept”, an architectural term for the transverse part of a cross-shaped church. Cashore, who was given $500 and an encyclopedia set, enjoyed a brief turn as a celebrity. He didn’t brag about his accomplishment after returning to Pennsylvania, but the experience quietly shaped him in multiple ways. “It gave me much more self-confidence and also gave me a sense that it’s very important to try to get things as correct as possible,” he said. “I’ve always been that way, and I still feel that way. If people are careless about spelling and writing, you wonder if they’re careless about their thinking.” “Preparing for a spelling bee today requires more concentration and technique than it did decades ago,” Cashore said. “The vocabulary of the words are far, far more technical. The English language, in the meantime, has imported a great many words from foreign languages which were not part of the English language when I was in eighth grade,” he added. 24. What can we learn about Cashore from the first two paragraphs? A. He is the best ever spelling champion. B. He prepared alone for the spelling bee. C. He used his spelling ability to help others. D. He preferred to show off his spelling talent. 25. What does the word “clinched” underlined in paragraph 3 refer to? A. Won. B. Declined. C. Removed. D. Gave. 26. How did the spelling bee competition affect Cashore? A. It helped him start his career. B. It strengthened his confidence. C. It limited his way of thinking. D. It brought him lasting popularity. 27. Which of the following is NOT a recommendation made by Cashore for preparing for today’s spelling bee? A. Enhance concentration. B. Learn technical vocabulary. C. Try to improve relevant skills. D. Learn multiple languages. C “Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back,” runs an old joke, “and he’ll be speechless.” This rests on a national stereotype: Italians are talkative and emotional, and all that arm-waggling supposedly goes to prove it. Susan Goldin-Meadow of the University of Chicago has a rather different view. Emotions come out in lots of ways: facial expressions, posture, tone of voice and so on. But people are doing something different when they use gestures with speech, which she sums up in the title of her new book, “Thinking with Your Hands”. It is a masterly tour through a lifetime’s research. Virtually everyone gestures, not just Italians. Experimental subjects, told after a research session that they were being watched for gestures, apologize for not having made any — but were doing so the entire time. People born blind gesture when they speak, including to each other. A woman born without arms but with “phantom limb syndrome (幻肢综合征)” describes how she uses her phantom arms when she talks — but not when she walks. All this suggests that cognition is, to some extent, “embodied”; thinking is not all done in your head. In fact, gestures that accompany speech are a second channel of information. Subjects watch a film in which a cat runs but are told to lie and say it jumped. They do so in words — while their hands make a running motion. People who say they believe in sexual equality but gesture with their hands lower when talking about women are not indicating women’s height; they can be shown to have biases of which they may be unaware. In “The Crown”, a historical drama series, Lady Diana is warned that her hands may betray her real emotions, which could be dangerous; they are tied together so she can learn to speak without gesticulating. No one who reads Susan’s book could ever again think that gesturing shows only a lack of control. It is about thinking and communication, and is a sophisticated aid to both. 28. Why does the author mention the old joke in Paragraph 1? A. To present an argument. B. To describe a scene. C. To lead in the topic. D. To clarify a doubt. 29. Which statement will Susan Goldin-Meadow probably agree with? A. The disabled seldom use gestures. B. Gestures literally embody cognition. C. Thinking only occurs inside the brain. D. Gestures are improper in communication. 30. What does the author try to prove in the last two paragraphs? A. Gestures may express what the speaker really thinks. B. People are unaware of the meanings of their gestures. C. Gesturing during speech shows only a lack of control. D. Speakers can lie more easily with the help of gestures. 31. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Speech: A Direct Channel of Information B. Gestures: A Vital Form of Communication C. Italian’s Body Language: A National Stereotype D. Thinking with Your Hands: A Lifetime’s Research D Scientists have made a “breakthrough” in handling nuclear fusion (聚变). The US Department of Energy officially announced the milestone in fusion energy research. For the first time, researchers created a nuclear fusion reaction that produced more energy than they put into the process. The experiment, conducted at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, generated 3.15 megajoules of energy, more than the 2.05 megajoules put into creating it. Nuclear fusion works by forcing together two atoms-most often hydrogen-to make a heavier one-like helium (氦). This explosive process releases massive amounts of energy, the Department of Energy explains. Fusion is the opposite of fission (裂变), the reaction that powers nuclear reactors used commercially today. Fusion occurs naturally in the heart of the Sun and the stars, providing these cosmic (宇宙的) objects with fuel. Since the 1950s, scientists have been trying to reproduce it on Earth in order to make use of the so-called clean, cheap, and almost limitless electricity. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, fusion generates four times more energy per kilogram than the fission used to power nuclear plants, and nearly 4 million times more energy than burning oil or coal. What’s more, unlike fossil fuels, fusion doesn’t release carbon dioxide the greenhouse gas that’s the main driver of climate change-into the atmosphere. And unlike nuclear fission, fusion doesn’t create long-lived radioactive waste, according to the Department of Energy. But so far, nuclear fusion hasn’t solved our energy problems on a grand scale. The recent announcement is a huge step forward in nuclear fusion energy, but applying the technology at commercial scale is likely still years away. Chanda Prescod Weinstein, a theoretical physicist, pointed out that the process the Department of Energy uses requires tritium (氚), a rare and radioactive isotope (同位素)of hydrogen. “It may yet convey important information that is ultimately transformative. We don’t know yet,” Prescod Weinstein tweeted. Investors, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, have poured billions into clean energy field trying to make fusion commercially workable, and the recent announcement is likely to continue that trend. 32. What is the breakthrough in nuclear fusion reaction? A It releases massive amounts of energy. B. It produces 3. 15 megajoules of energy. C. It works by forcing together two atoms. D. It generates more energy than that put into it. 33. Why have scientists been conducting nuclear fusion experiments? A. To avoid the commercial use of fission. B. To recycle the byproduct of radioactive waste. C. To reduce emission (排放) of greenhouse gas. D. To aim for the high efficiency in producing energy. 34. What does paragraph 5 focus on? A. The attitude of investors. B. The prospect of fusion energy. C. The significance of the announcement. D. The difficulty in producing fusion energy. 35. What is the author’s attitude towards fusion energy? A. Critical. B. Negative. C. Optimistic. D. Doubtful. Maybe you are probably getting an earful (训斥) from your inner voice. ___36___. You probably know the entire play off by heart. You are the best person for Cinderella.” he encouraged. I knew he was joking, but the truth was, I could tell you every single line (台词) in the play. When we reached the hall on Thursday, I began to wish I hadn’t signed up to be Cinderella. It was easier to feel hopeful several days ago when my name was the only one on the sign-up sheet. Since then, seven other girls have added their own names to the list, including Sherry Anderson, the head cheerleader Luckily, we were given a moment to practice before the auditions began. “Good,” Mr Cordoza said approvingly as he stopped by and listened to my practice. I felt a glimmer of hope. “Now let’s see how you get on performing on the stage in front of everyone.” He clapped his hands for attention, signaling the start of the auditions. Sherry Anderson was up first. She showed great confidence as she tossed her long blonde hair and recited her lines. Although she lacked an understanding of the lines, her performance was attractive. Then it was my turn. As I climbed the stairs to the stage, I tripped, nearly falling flat on my face. I felt my cheeks burning. “When you’re ready,” Mr Cordoza said, sounding impatient. “Sorry,” I mumbled. I tried to calm my breathing, but the nerves tightened in my throat. “I...I…” I stuttered. ‘Speak up Amy, can’t hear you!’ jeers and whistles came from the back of the hall. I could feel that my performance was a disaster. Even Sherry’s lines were better than mine. Finally, I limped to the end of the scene, and as soon as it was over, I rushed off the stage, feeling defeated. As I made my way through the hallway, I spotted Artie waiting for me. He told me that Sherry got the role of Cinderella but I would be the understudy (替角). ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On the day of the performance, Sherry got sick and couldn’t come. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 成都外国语学校2024-2025学年度上期期中考试 高三英语试卷 注意事项: 1. 6. Having received your Chinese painting, I am truly impressed by your use of color and composition, especially the way you’ve captured the landscape - it has a great sense of atmosphere! However, I suggest adding more details to certain areas, such as making the brushstrokes for the trees finer to create more depth. You might also consider adding a light mist effect in the sky to bring the scene to life. Hope my suggestions above will be of some help and best of luck in the competition! Looking forward to your good news! He told me that Sherry got the role of Cinderella but I would be the understudy (替角). At the news, I sighed and forced a smile. Sensing my disappointment, Artie put his hand on my shoulder and encouraged, “Seize the chance and you can shine too. Believe in yourself!” His words giving me a burst of confidence, I nodded admittedly, determined to be the best understudy. In the following days, I spent hours every day rehearsing my lines, perfecting my expressions and practicing each act. Gradually, I grew more confident and was fully prepared for the possibility of stepping onto the stage if needed. On the day of the performance, Sherry got sick and couldn’t come. Panic filled the air backstage. Calm outside but nervous inside, I took a deep breath and stepped forward. All those days of hard work and preparation had led to this moment. As the curtains rose, I walked onto the stage with a newfound courage. The lights shone on me, and I delivered my lines with full of passion and confidence. With the music fading away, the audience broke into thunderous applause. At that very moment, I knew I fulfilled my mission as an understudy. That day, I became the star of the show, proving to myself and everyone that chances are for those who are prepared.
