(The living room. Friday night. A table and two chairs at the front centre. Grandfather and Father, seated at the table, are playing chess.)
Grandfather: And…I win!
(Son enters the room.)
Father: Not again! Oh look, here comes my boy. How are you, son?
Son: (nervously approaching the table) Erm… Dad, can we talk?
Father: Sure! You know you can always turn to your dad for a chat.
Son: OK. Here it is. I’ve decided not to go to university. I want to focus on my band and have a career in music when I leave school.
Father: (raising his voice in surprise) You can’t be serious! What about your future career as a lawyer?!
Son: I knew you’d say that. You just assume I want to be a lawyer, but that’s only because you are a lawyer.
Father: What’s wrong with being a lawyer? Lawyers help people and are respected by others.
Son: Yes, but I’m not interested in law. I want to work in a studio, not a court.
Grandfather: (looking at Father) Calm down. OK?
Father: (ignoring Grandfather’s words) Stop daydreaming! Playing in a band is not a job.
Son: Of course it is! The music industry is developing fast now. Making music is a job.
Grandfather: (stepping between Father and Son and raising his voice) Hey! I told you to calm down, both of you!
Father: But I told him to study something useful at university!
Grandfather: (laughing) Easy, son! I remember when you were his age, you said that you wanted to be a professional football player.
Father: And you wanted me to be an engineer!
Grandfather: I just wanted you to be happy, and an engineer — a happy engineer.
Grandfather: Yes, and you have found the career that suits your talents. I’m so proud of you. Your son is proud of you, too.
Son: Of course I am, but I have different talents.
Grandfather: (turning to Son) Why don’t you also take my advice and think carefully before jumping in with both feet?
Son: Well, I could try…
Grandfather: If you go to university and play music at the same time, you will have two choices for your future. And I’m sure playing in a band will help you make lots of new friends at university.

Jack White is a 17-year-old student who has already published a collection of poetry with a local publisher. Jack believes switching (转换) to an all-boys school changed his life.
“When I was at my mixed school, poetry was for girls, not boys. Boys were supposed to like subjects like math, computers, and science. When I wrote poems, the boys at school used to make fun of me. At my new school, things are different.”
Jack may not realize that boys and girls also learn and think differently based on specific biological developments. These differences have an effect on how and when boys and girls learn, so single-sex education is actually better for children.
Take brain development for example, the areas of the brain involved (有关联) in language, feelings, physical coordination (协调), and social relationships develop in a different order and speed in girls and boys. Teenage girls find it easier to answer the question, “How does the story make you feel?” than teenage boys. Research has shown that teenage girls’ brains develop the connections between language and emotions (情感) earlier than boys’ brains. A teenage boy will have more difficulty answering that question because his brain has not fully developed that connection yet. In a single-sex classroom, everyone’s brain is developing at similar speeds, so teachers can teach according to their students’ actual abilities.
Boys and girls also have different hearing abilities. Girls have a sense of hearing which is two to four times better than boys. Women teachers often speak more quietly, so boys may have more difficulty hearing a woman teacher if she is talking in her “normal” voice. The teacher needs to speak louder to get the boys’ attention. In a single-sex school, teachers do not have to keep adjusting the volume of their voice.
Jack might not notice the biological arguments for why single-sex education is better, but he realizes that he is learning faster at his new school. As Jack says, “I hated writing and studying English in my old school, but look at me now, I am a published poet! My new school helped me become comfortable with who I really am.”
32.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Girls usually have fewer chances to talk in class in a mixed school.
B.Jack was laughed at by other boys because he was not good at poetry.
C.The part of the brain that understands our emotions grows slower in boys.
D.Boys’ and girls’ brains will develop at similar speeds if they study together.
33.What will probably happen in a single-sex school?
A.Teachers will give lessons based on their students’ abilities.
B.Students will learn and make progress at the same speed.
C.Students will be expected to learn poetry as a main subject.
D.Teachers will ask more questions involved in students’ emotions.
34.The words “adjusting the volume” in Paragraph 5 probably means “________”.
A.changing the loudness
B.increasing the clearness
C.lowering the level
D.controlling the speed
35.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To compare how boys and girls think differently.
B.To show how a boy became a published poet.
C.To explain why single-sex education is better.
D.To discuss the problem of writing poems at school.

My parents went to work and left my brother and me alone at home. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching television. Suddenly the doorbell rang. My younger brother rushed to open the door thinking that our parents had come home.
Outside, stood a tall man wearing a black raincoat. He said that he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home. Without thinking, my brother said, “No. ” He asked if we would like to buy some books, which he was selling. I quickly explained that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parents' permission(允许).
Then, as I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother's hands with a rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but I tied it in a special way. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.
Soon, he went upstairs to search the bedroom for valuables. I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on his hands. He then untied me. Luckily, the robber(强盗)forgot to lock the kitchen window. My brother managed to get out of the house through the window and I told him to go to the neighbourhood police station and call for help. Les Choristes is a heart-warming French film. The film tells the story of music teacher Clément Mathieu and his students.
Clément Mathieu arrives at an old boarding school to work as a music teacher for troubled boys. He feels like a failure. The middle-aged man has mixed feelings about how long he can last as a teacher for these boys. Rachin, the headmaster, is another unsuccessful man. He shows his disappointment by punishing those students who are difficult to control.
It isn’t long before Mathieu finds that some of the boys can sing. So he organizes a choir (合唱团) and has them sing musical pieces he has written.
Pierre is known in the school as a trouble-maker. But Mathieu knows that the boy has a great talent for singing, so he invites him to join the choir. This makes the boy’s mom very happy, who is often annoyed (使烦恼) by her boy’s trouble at school.
In addition, Mathieu cares very much about his students. Pépinot is a boy who lost his parents. He is often treated poorly by other boys. It is Mathieu who gives him the love and care he always wants. It makes the boy feel special.
Les Choristes was a huge hit in France and was chosen as the French entry (参赛作品) in the Oscar Awards (奥斯卡) for Best Foreign Language Film of 2005.

The middle-aged man has mixed feelings about how long he can last as a teacher for these boys. Rachin, the headmaster, is another unsuccessful man. C

【范文】
Dear Mr. Zhang,
How’s it going? I’m writing to tell you something about the movies I like. I often go to the movies once a month. I like comedies best because they can make me happy.
The film that impresses me most is Hi, Mom, directed by the famous actress Jia Ling, who also plays the leading role. It describes that Jia travels back to the year 1981. She meets her mother at a young age and becomes her mother’s friend. She hopes to improve her mother’s life and make her mother happy. This film has received many positive reviews. Many people can’t help crying because of the main characters’ sincere affection for each other. I strongly recommend it to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
