Say “Yes” to Life
My mom sometimes told some interesting stories about me that happened in my childhood. She once told me that after I learned to say “Mama” and “Dada”, my third 16 was “No!”. Then it is a sad thing that I used that word too often as a boy. I always did what I wanted 17 . I didn’t want to eat any vegetables. I didn’t want to go to bed on time 18 I was tired of playing. I didn’t want to work in the 19 . Because I felt too tired to raise flowers. I would rather 20 books than help my mom and grandma with the housework. In other words, I was a bit of a brat (顽童). I have two elder brothers. Being the 21 of three sons, I probably said “no” a lot more than I should have.
As I 22 , I began to say “yes!” a lot more. I can remember sweeping the floor and 23 the window. I felt really 24 to help my mother and father. I can remember studying hard to get good 25 in school. I can remember the pride in my parents’ eyes when I got into college. I can remember learning 26 saying “yes” could bring more joy into my life than saying “no” ever did.
Even now, I am still 27 how to say “yes”. My only advice to 28 is not to wait as long as I did. Say “yes” to life. Remember to say “yes” to love. Say “yes” to help others and 29 this world a better place. “Yes” may only be a word, 30 it can change your life. From now on, try to say “yes”!

Mr. Wu is showing his classmates how to make pressed flowers(押花).
Start here
Step 1: Carefully pick a few flowers in a place where you are allowed. Do not take too many! Pick them later in the day and when the weather is fine so they’re not wet from the rain.
Step 2: Open a heavy book and lay a piece of blotting paper(吸水纸)inside. Place your flowers “face” down to keep the petals(花瓣)nice and flat. You could press some “sideways” for a different result. Then place another piece of blotting paper on top.
Step 3: Carefully close the book and place more heavy books on top. Put them in a warm place. Check on your flowers every few days and change the blotting paper if it’s wet. It should take about 2—4 weeks for your flowers to fully dry.
Pressed Flower Works
Once they’re dry, you can make some amazing art from your flowers. PVA glue is the best thing to stick them with.
◆Cool Cards
Stick pressed flowers to the cards and give them to your friends and family as presents.
◆Framed(框架的)Flowers
Organize them on paper and frame them! Double-sided glass frames look great, too.
◆Candle Holders
Use PVA glue to stick them to the outside of empty glass jars. Then add a few layers of PVA on top. Once dry, use as tea-light holders.
Tips
Large flowers such as bluebells or dandelions take longer to dry out. The flowers will keep their colour better if you press them soon after picking them.
31.What’s Mr. Wu’s course about?
A.P.E. B.DIY. C.Biology. D.Painting.
32.To make a candle holder with pressed flowers, Shelly needs flowers, books, blotting paper, ________.

A.Making pressed flowers is a traditional Chinese art.
B.Small flowers dry more easily and keep colour better.
C.We can press flowers sideways on the paper to dry fully.

The stone walls, the courtyard, clothes hung on a clothesline … At first sight, you may think they’re real. But in fact, you’ve fallen down a rabbit hole of miniatures (微观模型) of Chinese rural (农村的) houses in the 1990s made by a miniature artist.
Feng Jiangtao, 32, has made more than 40 miniatures for people from around the country to make a copy of the old houses that carry their memories.
① In April 2021, Feng made a miniature of an old shop in his hometown — Yongzhou, Hunan Province. It showed black tiles (瓦片) and gray walls, a small TV playing cartoons, and a bulb giving out a warm, bright glow (光).
He then posted a video of this miniature online and it became popular. People from around the country called him, asking him to make models of their old houses by using photos they provided.
② Making miniatures is not easy. It usually takes Feng about 10 days to finish a miniature. He makes them in the ratio of 1:30 to the home’s real size. To better remake the old house, he uses real building materials, such as cement (水泥), wood, and soil, and then focuses on how to make it look old.
Some parts are more complicated (复杂的), such as making tiles. Since there are no such small-sized tiles, he needs to cut them out of black cardboard or make small models with tile powder.
③ One of his customers, a post-90s girl, once asked him to make a copy of an old house in her hometown Jiangxi. She used to live there with her parents. She wanted to give the model to her mother to keep the memory of her dead father.
“ ④ It is the old house that is miniaturized. However, it enlarges (放大) the warm family affection (亲情) and love and treasures the good old days that are gone forever,” Feng told China Daily.

A.He made many videos about old houses.
B.His video about a model of a shop became popular.
C.He made many models that were quite complicated.
D.He helped many people make models of their old houses.

A.The normal size of a miniature.
B.The complicated parts of a miniature.
C.What materials Feng uses.
D.How Feng makes his models.
36.Where can we best put “Every miniature model has a story behind it.” in the passage?
A.① B.② C.③ D.④
37.How can we describe Feng’s works?
A.Warm and memorable. B.Small and easy to make.
C.Modern and expensive. D.Large and beautiful.

Most people have probably seen a movie about an AI (人工智能) tool or a robot (机器人) that has become so smart that it can control the world. At present, there are no such AI tools or robots. But scientists have been working to improve AI models. Some recent models can create realistic photos from a short written description. Others can recreate anyone’s voice based on a voice recording just a few seconds long.
The AI tool that has got the most attention recently is ChatGPT, created by the company OpenAI. When asked a question, ChatGPT answers quickly in perfect sentences. It can make up stories and games, write articles, program computers, and much more. ChatGPT appears to be very intelligent (智能的). But in fact, ChatGPT is simply guessing—based on its training information—which word is most likely to come next, over and over again.
In March, OpenAI developed a more powerful model, called GPT-4. GPT-4 can create and explain jokes, and pass tests that are difficult for humans. The rapid progress of recent AI models worries some people. In late March, many computer experts (专家) wrote a letter calling for a six-month pause (暂停) for any work on AI tools.
The letter says AI companies race to create smart AI tools that no one can “understand, predict, or...control”. The group behind the letter wants governments to develop laws to make sure AI tools are safe.
ChatGPT has caused so much excitement that many companies are likely to keep developing smart AI tools. But the letter has sent a strong warning that many people, including leaders, will be thinking about carefully.
42.What can we know from the first paragraph?
A.AI models are becoming intelligent.
B.Scientists get new ideas from movies.
C.Robots will not control the world in the future.
D.Things in movies will happen in the real world.
43.Which question is not answered in Paragraph 2?
A.Who created ChatGPT. B.What ChatGPT can do.
C.How ChatGPT works. D.When was ChatGPT created.
44.Why did many computer experts write the letter?
A.They advised people not to use ChatGPT.
B.They wanted to explain why GPT-4 was much safer.
C.They hoped AI companies could solve real-life problems.
D.They warned leaders that AI tools would become dangerous.
45.Which of the following is TRUE? .
A.GPT-4 can do any work instead of humans.
B.Computer experts think ChatGPT is good enough.
C.AI companies are racing to develop smart AI tools.
D.Scientists are working to create AI tools bigger than GPT-4.

1.A Bite of New Year (舌尖上的新年) is ________ 89-minute-long documentary film. It began to be shown ________ January 7, 2016.
A.a, in B.the, on C.an, on D.an, in
2.You can send text messages ________ 1396 to vote ________ your favourite TV programme.
A.to; to B.on; to C.on; for D.to; for
to到;for为了;on在上面。根据“send...to”把……
3.— Thousands of Chinese children play the piano at present.
— Oh, I think learning a musical __________ guides a child to an understanding of music.
A.introduction B.invitation C.instrument D.instruction
A. introduction介绍、引见;B. invitation邀请;C. instrument乐器;D. instruction操作指南。
4.________ everyone is here, let’s begin our meeting.
A.Unless B.Since C.Although D.When
Unless除非;Since既然;Although尽管;When当……时。根据“... everyone is here, let’s begin our meeting.”
5.Bob likes eating sweet snacks while ________ TV. I think he’d better________ the habit.
A.to watch; give up B.watching; give up
C.watching; to give up D.to watch; to give up
结构,是while sb. is/was doing sth.
6.The football match will be covered ________ next week.
A.lively B.living C.live D.alive
根据“The football match will be covered”可知,此处是指现场直播,副词live修饰动词covered。故选C。
7.—Tom, do you know if Sam ________ to my party next week?
—I think he will come if he ________.

C.comes; invites D.will come; is invited
根据“do you know if Sam ... to my party next week”可知,此句是if引导的宾语从句,由时间状语“next week”可知,时态用一般将来时will do;根据“he will come if he”可知,此处是if引导的条件状语从句,根据“主将从现”原则,从句用一般现在时,主语he是第三人称单数,与invite是被动关系,故用一般现在时的被动语态is done。故选D。
8._______ exciting news! We will have a _______ holiday after the exam.
A.What an; two weeks B.How an;two weeks
C.What; two-week D.How; two weeks’
9.—Your spoken English is all very good. How do you improve it?
—Thanks. Mrs. Wang always asks us to _______ conversations in our English classes.
A.turn up B.make up C.take up D.end up
turn up 出现,把音量调高;make up编造;take up占用,开始做;end up最终成为。
10.—What do you think of our school basketball team?
—They’re going to lose the match ________ they improve their skills.
A.unless B.until C.if D.because
【答案】A
unless除非;until直到;if如果;because因为。根据“They’re going to lose the match ... they improve their skills.” 故选A。
11.________ people were found ________ after the terrible earthquake.
A.A number of; died B.The number of; died
C.A number of; dead D.The number of; dead
A number of许多;The number of…… 分析“...people were found...after the terrible earthquake.”
12.I don’t mind ________, because I like films ________ horror and mysteries.
A.feeling scared; full of B.to feel scared; filled with
C.feeling scared; filled of D.to feel scared; filled with
【答案】A

feel scared“感觉害怕”;be full of/be filled with“充满……”。 作films的后置定语,需要去掉be动词,用full of或者filled with。故选A
13.After running a 1000-metre race, he was________.
A.out of breathe B.breathed heavily
C.took a deep breath D.out of breath

Feng Jiangtao, 32, has made more than 40 miniatures for people from around the country to make a copy of the old houses that carry their memories.
