If your family loves to travel but you worry about the environmental, social and
economic effect, it’s time to take a more sustainable approach to your trips.
Wales
Wales packs many sustainable activities for kids. Camp in one of many green
campsites around Pembrokeshire, where children can have fun learning about
sustainable living. Or find an environmentally friendly campsite at The Greener
Camping Club. Don’t forget to factor in a spin on the world’s only people-powered
rollercoaster in Snowdonia.
Volcán Tenorio Area
When you think about taking your kids to Costa Rica, you normally focus on
viewing its incredible wildlife. But what about giving back to the human residents too?
One way to support local communities and understand the Tico culture is by staying on
a farm, and there are loads of lovely options around Volcán Tenorio.
Austria
Explore the kid-friendly Austrian capital of Vienna, which offers more organic
farmland than any other city and has both “Green Taxis” and plenty of bike-share
stations. The city has some fantastic museums for children and the splendid Schloss
Schonbrunn where kids can dress up.
San Francisco
San Francisco is perfect for a break that will both delight the kids and satisfy your
sustainability principles. The city has banned plastic bags and bottles for years. Plus,
most of the fun things to do with kids can be accessed without using a car and many
involve green spaces.

When was the last time you went to your local library? Last week? A month ago?
For many reasons, borrowing books from libraries seem to drop. With advances in
technology, it is now possible for people to download and read whatever they like on
electronic devices such as Kindles.
Call me old-fashioned, but I've never got into the e-book: I like printed books; I
love the smell of a new book, and I enjoy leafing through paper pages. What would I
do with my vast bookmark collection if everything I read was electronic?
I prefer paper books to e-books, and I also prefer to own them myself. Though
Libraries only lend books , I still love libraries. They offer a quiet space to sit, read,
think, do research…a real escape from the outside world. When I was at university, I
frequently spent hours at the school library and borrowed numerous printed materials,
as it was just too expensive to buy brand new books every week to read for seminars
and lectures. Libraries are free!
Libraries often organize interesting activities as well. At home, my local library
hosted actors, historians and other speakers during the town's annual art and literature
festival. Well-known authors are also invited to libraries to give speeches or lead
discussions about their work. Events such as these are a great way to appeal to people
of all ages in the community and encourage the use of libraries.
5
Since moving abroad to work in Quebec for a year, the importance of libraries has
become more clear to me. The school I work in has a wonderful library, which is
proving invaluable when I want a good book to read but I realize that everything I would
want to read during the year is unlikely to fit in my suitcase by the time l go home!
There are still many fantastic ways to use libraries—maybe we just need to be more
awake to them!
24. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A.The reason why people like reading books on Kindles.
B.The reason why people seldom borrow books from libraries.
C.The advantages of modern technology.
D.How to download electronic books.
25. Why does the author like libraries ?
A.Because they offer a real escape from the outside world.
B. Because they offer many e-books .
C.Because they offer many new books .
D.Because they organize boring activities.
26. What did the author ‘s do in Quebec according to the passage ?
A. She read many e-books B.She bought many new books
C.She gave a speech at the school library D.She often visited the school library.
27. What's the author's purpose in writing the passage?
A.To give some advice on reading B.To stress the advantages of libraries.
C.To compare different kinds of books. D.To share the author's reading experience.
C
More than 10 years ago,it was difficult to buy a tasty pineapple (菠萝).The fruits
that made it to the UK were green on the outside and, more often than not, hard with
an unpleasant taste within. Then in 1996,the Del Monte Gold pineapple produced in
Hawaii first hit our shelves.
The new type of pineapple looked more yellow gold than green. It was slightly
softer on the outside and had a lot of juice inside. But the most important thing about
this new type of pineapple was that it was twice as sweet as the hit and miss pineapples
we had known. In no time, the Del Monte Gold took the market by storm, rapidly
6
becoming the world’s bestselling pineapple variety, and delivering natural levels of
sweetness in the mouth,up until then only found in tinned pineapple.
In nutrition (营养) it was all good news too. This nice tasting pineapple contained
four times more vitamin C (维生素 C) than the old green variety. Nutritionists said that
it was not only full of vitamins, but also good against some diseases. People were
understandably eager to be able to buy this wonderful fruit. The new type of pineapple
was selling fast, and the Del Monte Gold pineapple rapidly became a fixture in the
shopping basket of the healthy eaters.
Seeing the growing market for its winning pineapple,Del Monte tried to keep the
market to itself. But other fruit companies developed similar pineapples. Del Monte
turned to law for help, but failed. Those companies argued successfully that Del
Monte’s attempts to keep the golden pineapple for itself were just a way to knock them
out of the market.
28. We learn from the text that the new type of pineapple is________.
A.green outside and sweet inside
B.goodlooking outside and soft inside
C.yellow gold outside and hard inside
D.a little soft outside and sweet inside
29. Why was the new type of pineapple selling well?
A.It was less sweet and not good for health.
B.It was rich in nutrition and tasted nice.
C.It was developed by Del Monte.
D.It was used as medicine.
30. The underlined word “fixture” in Paragraph 3 probably refers to ________.
A.something that people enjoy eating
B.something that is always gift
C.something that is difficult to get
D.something that people use as a gift
31. We can we infer about Del Monte from the last paragraph ?.
A.He allowed other companies to develop pineapples
B.He succeeded in keeping the pineapple for itself
7
C.He tried hard to control the pineapple market
D.He planned to help the other companies

An AI from Google DeepMind has achieved a silver medal score at this year’s
International Mathematical(数学的) Olympiad (IMO), the first time any AI has made
it to the podium (领奖台).
The IMO is considered the world’s most famous competition for young
mathematicians. In January, Google DeepMind demonstrated(演示) Alpha Geometry,
an AI system that could answer some IMO geometry questions as well as humans.
However, this was not from a live competition, and it couldn’t answer questions from
other mathematical disciplines.
Google DeepMind has now released a new AI, called Alpha Proof, which can solve
a wider range of mathematical problems. It is an improved version(版本) of Alpha
Geometry that can solve more geometry questions.
When the team tested both systems together on this year’s IMO questions, they
answered four out of six questions correctly, giving them a score of 28 out of a possible
42 points. This was enough to win a silver medal and just one point under this year’s
gold medal threshold (门槛). At the contest in Bath, UK, 58 competitors won a gold
medal and 123 won a silver medal.
“We are all very much aware that AI will eventually be better than humans at
solving most mathematical problems, but the rate at which AI is improving is
breathtaking,” says Gregor Dolinar, the IMO president. “Missing the gold medal at
IMO 2024 by just one point a few days ago is truly impressive.”
While Alpha Proof’s performance is impressive, it works slowly, taking up to three
days to find some solutions instead of the 4.5hours per three questions that competitors
are allowed. It also failed to answer both questions on combinatorics, which is the study
of counting and arranging numbers. “We are still working to understand why this is,
which will hopefully lead us to improve the system,” says Alex Davies at Google
DeepMind.
32. What do we know about Alpha Proof in paragraph 3?
A.Its designer. B.Its problems.
C.Its disadvantages. D.Its functions.
8
33. What statement about this year’s IMO is true?
A.It took place in Bath, UK.
B.There were 10 questions in the contest.
C.181 competitors took part in the contest.
D.This year’s gold medal threshold was 30 points.
34. What may be Alex Davies’s attitude to the development of Alpha Proof?
A. interested. B.Indifferent. C.Positive. D. Disapproving
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A.DeepMind AI Gets Silver Medal at IMO 2024
B.DeepMind AI Is Developed to Take Part in IMO 2024
C.AI Solve Difficult Mathematical Problems Well
D. AI Will Be Better than Humans

Start studying in school
Good learning methods are developed in the classroom as you take notes.
Note-taking is a way of remembering what you were taught or what
read. 37 Make sure they’re easy to read and review
Plan your study time.
When you sit down to study, think about how much time you want to devote to
each subject. Most people can keep focused for about 45 minutes a time. 38 If
you find yourself thinking about other things as you study, pull your attention back.
When your 45 minutes of studying are up, you can take a 15-minute break.
39
Many teachers tell students ahead of time what format(总体安排)of an exam will
be. This can help you decide how you study. For example, if you know you’ re going
to have multiple-choice questions, you’ll know how to focus on studying facts and
details. But if the exam contains non-multiple-choice questions, you’ll think about
9
which topics are most likely to be covered and how you might answer questions on
those topics.
Start a study group
Sometimes it can be useful to study with others. 40 It can also make sure
that your notes are correct and that you understand the subject.
A.Work hard all the time.
B.Here are some secrets to studying well.
C.Keep your notes organized by subject.
D.Listen to the teacher and practice carefully.
