How fast can someone climb 15 meters — the height of a five-story building? The answer from Chinese speed climber Cao Long is 4.98 seconds.
The 23-year-old is the third person to have completed the speed climbing route — a l5-meter-tall wall with foot and hand holds — within 5 seconds. The other two are Indonesian athletes Kiromal Katibin and Veddrig Leonardo. People have given Cao many nicknames, such as “fastest man in China” and “Chinese Spider-Man”.
According to Cao, the result of speed climbing can differ every time due to its highly demanding and stressful nature. In this race, two climbers compete at the same time, and since it’s a sport that finishes within seconds, achieving success requires perfection. Athletes must have the right balance of focus, confidence and courage to take risks.
“Keeping a level head is the key,” Cao said. “Everyone wants to win. But the more you want it, the more likely you’ll mess up. Being too calm and trying to avoid any mistakes won’t do you any good either because that mindset takes away your advantages and your willingness to fight.” Cao went on to note, “You just have to find the right balance.” But this pressure, in fact, is part of the reason why Cao loves the sport.
Cao took his first step into the world of climbing at the age of 8. Like many kids starting out, he mainly focused on bouldering(抱石岩) and lead climbing(先锋攀岩), doing well in both. Unfortunately, at the age of 18, Cao had a bad surgery after injuring his left arm in a competition. It was after that surgery that Cao decided to give speed climbing a try because it requires different techniques from bouldering and lead climbing and puts less pressure on his previously injured body parts.
It turned out that Cao was great at speed climbing as well, even though he thinks he is hardly the strongest athlete. In his eyes, setting a national record of 4.98 seconds has already become a thing of the past. “I will continue to work hard and climb my way to the top.” said Cao.
24. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Cao focused on bouldering and lead climbing at the age of 18.
B. Cao is nicknamed ”fastest man in China” for creating a world record.
C. Cao thinks speed climbing can be influenced by the tough natural environment.
D. Cao is the first person in China to finish the speed climbing 15-meter-tall route within 5 seconds.
25. What does “keep a level head” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Expect to win. B. Keep body balance. C. Keep the head up. D. Stay calm.
26. Why did Cao choose speed climbing?
A. Speed climbing affects his body less.
B. He did much better in speed climbing.
C. He thought speed climbing was more attractive.
D. It requires similar techniques used in bouldering and lead climbing.
27. Which of the following can best describe Cao?
A. Outgoing and confident. B. Brave and creative.
C. Determined and strong-minded. D. Modest and curious.
C
English language learning and teaching are more than language rules and phonetics(语音学). Language learners who pay no attention to cultural backgrounds seem to meet many difficulties in understanding what native speakers mean. Cultural education makes the process easier.
It was during the 1960s when language experts began to place cultural education at the forefront of language learning. In 1974, teachers started to introduce it into the English language learning classroom. In the 1990s, Michael Byram and Carol Morgan published a report, which showed the importance of knowing the learners’ cultural backgrounds when teachers taught their students to study a foreign language.
If spoken story-telling is common in a student’s cultural tradition, reading a text may be a little bit difficult. So if the language teacher is familiar with the cultural tradition of this student, he or she may consider the student’s reading trouble as not a learning problem but a result of cultural differences.
There are many cultural differences affecting English language learning. The most obvious one is the native language itself. A student who follows basic language and grammar rules from his or her native language will have trouble learning English. Another cultural influence is learning or teaching style. All of these may cause different learning results.
Teachers should be educated in many kinds of instructions that could meet every student’s needs. Classroom time should focus on understandable cultural education. Lessons about body language, eye contact and conversational language should also be the most important parts of the curriculum (课程).
28. What can we learn about cultural education in Paragraph 2?
A. It has quite a long history. B. It faced a lack of teaching resources.
C. It worked better for English learners. D. It has developed in theory and practice.
29. The example in Paragraph 3 suggests that language teachers should_______.
A. encourage students with learning difficulties more
B. help students realize the importance of communication
C. learn about students’ cultural language backgrounds
D. set a good learning example for their students
30. What is suggested about cultural education in English teaching?
A. Organize colorful after-school activities.
B. Introduce more ways of communication besides language
C. Teach grammar rules through more reading and writing.
D. Find the similarities between English and one’s native language.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Culture influences language learning.
B. Each culture has its features.
C. English teaching methods are changing.
D. People’s learning habits decide their learning abilities.
D
A speech in a play by Shakespeare can be as short as a word or as long as several hundred. But what is the most common length?
Staying away from Shakespeare himself for a moment, we can take Ben Jonson’s play Volpone (1606) and count the number of speeches and their lengths. The most common length is four words. The next most common length is five words. Of the other 16 Jonson’s plays, 12 also have a speech length mode(模式) of four. It was not just Jonson; it was everybody. After 1602, four-word speeches were the most common kind across all the early modern plays that survived.
The London theatre industry took off in the late 1580s and early 1590s and we see a concentration of speech length modes of nine or ten. After 1602, the mode of four predominated. If we look just at Shakespeare’s plays, we find him doing what everyone else did: changing from favoring nine-word speeches to favouring four-word speeches around 1597-1602 and never going back.
Our suggestion is that the playwrights(剧作家) learned progressively from one another how to represent more closely the speech lengths of everyday exchanges and found that audiences responded well to these. They started to focus less on strict writing rules and more on the liveliness of everyday speech.
Another way to think of this is offered by the Russian literary scholar Boris Yarkho. He put forward an “index (指数) of liveliness” — the ratio of the number of speeches to the total number of lines in a play. He researched the works of the 17th-century French playwright Pierre Corneille and found that his comedies have a higher index because of their shorter speeches. The move from a mode of nine words to a mode of four represents the shortened average speech, and thus a move to livelier drama in Yarkho’s terms.
Nevertheless, we have no record of any dramatist or playgoer reflecting on the shortening of average speech lengths; our only knowledge of it comes from counting the words in the plays for ourselves.
32. What happened in English plays around the 1600s?
A. Their storylines were about famous writers. B. They were influenced by a poetic writing style.
C. They featured different storytelling techniques. D. Their speeches were generally shorter in length.
33. What does the underlined word “predominated” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Remained unique. B. Took the leading position.
C. Disappeared slowly. D. Played an educational role.
34. Why did playwrights change their writing styles according to paragraph 4?
A. To challenge traditional writing rules. B. To stand out by applying their unique style.
C. To avoid being affected by social values. D. To create realistic and acceptable speeches.
35. Which of the following is Yarkho’s opinion on the change in plays?
A. It saved actors the trouble of memorizing their lines.
B. It reflected people's preference for serious dialogues.
C. It helped present dramas in an active and pleasant way.
D. It made the characters express their feelings effectively.

India’s touring(流动的) cinemas are dying, and being reborn. And India is perhaps the most film-mad country in the world while it also has the lowest ratios of screens to human beings. 36 The screens that do exist are unevenly distributed. PVR, India’s biggest cinema operator, has more screens in Chandigarh, a prosperous city of about a million people, than it does in Rajasthan, a poor stale of 80 million. If Muhammad could not go to the movies, the movies had to come to Muhammad. Twenty years ago, there were 1,400 odd touring cinemas in Pusegaon. 37 However, today there are only 52 travelling cinemas.
38 One is smartphone and internet expansion, which leads to the other reason for the collapse of the touring cinemas: 39 Sushil Chaudhary, the founder of a new chain of touring cinemas called Picture Time, is making a different bet on the possibilities of cinema. Mr. Chaudhary started his company in 2015 and has since set up 37 moving screens seating between 100 and 250 people. The touring cinema was nothing like the one in Pusegaon. 40 The picture was crystal clear and the sound used Dolby. Picture Time’s tickets are cheap, at between 30 and 70 rupees, compared with an average ticket price of 191 rupees at PVR’s cinemas.
A. they failed to change over time.
B. Fewer people can afford to go to cinemas.
C. The floor was carpeted and there were plastic chairs.
D. The following are the reasons leading to this phenomenon.
E. It was in this world that the touring cinemas played a crucial role.
F. The collapse of the touring cinemas was for two interlinked reasons.
G. It is one more paradox (悖论) among the millions of contradictions there.

Everyone in my drama class saw the paper in my hands shaking when I stood up to try out for a lead role in the yearly school Thanksgiving play. I was there because the teacher wanted everyone to try out for a part.
Being shy and not confident, I began nervously reading the part for the main character, Star. She had no parents. Feeling so sorry for her, I finished reading.
Later when reading the name list, the teacher looked at me and announced, “Patty, you play Star. Come and get your script(剧本).”I was shocked. Jim, an excellent boy, was playing the other lead.To learn my lines, I practiced every day and finally memorized them. I became more confident and happier.
Then we started practising acting. Jim played the character, a Scrooge(吝啬鬼), who is unwilling to put a candle in his window so that the light will show passers-by the slippery ice on the path below. On the Thanksgiving day, Star comes along, falls on the ice and gets injured.
Finally feeling bad, the Scrooge helps her up. To thank him, Star kisses his hand.
One day, before our drama class started, I saw a terrible drawing of me on the blackboard with words: Falling Star. I was laughed at by someone.
The teacher asked,“Who did this?” Nobody knew. We started rehearsing(排练), but my heart wasn’t in it. The teacher told me not to care about the silly trick; it wouldn’t happen again. But I was sad and anxious, wanting to quit. Finally I moved on and continually worked hard for the play.
Soon it was the day before the show. It was time for the dress rehearsal. I was excited. Everything went smoothly at the dress rehearsal until the scene where I slipped on the ice and the Scrooge helped me up.
When I kissed his hand, a terrible noise and laughter sounded from behind the set. I quickly left the stage and hurried into an empty room. With tears, I said, “I can’t do it. Please get someone else!”

M: Hmm, it’s a long way to travel, but it’s a good idea.

D 25. D 26. A 27.

D 29. C 30. B 31. A

D 33. B 34. D 35. C
根据文章第三段“The London theatre industry took off in the late 1580s and early 1590s and we see a concentration of speech length modes of nine or ten.(伦敦戏剧产业在1580年代末和1590年代初开始腾飞,我们看到话语长度模式集中在9词或10词)”及“If we look just at Shakespeare’s plays, we find him doing what everyone else did: changing from favoring nine-word speeches to favouring four-word speeches around 1597-1602 and never going back.(如果我们只看莎士比亚的戏剧,我们会发现他做的和其他人一样:在1597-1602年左右,他从喜欢9个词的话语变成了喜欢4个词的话语,并且再也没有变回去)”可知,16世纪末尾,话语长度多为9词,10词,17世纪后,话语长度转向4词,话语长度变短。故选D。
根据划线词下文“If we look just at Shakespeare’s plays, we find him doing what everyone else did: changing from favoring nine-word speeches to favouring four-word speeches around 1597-1602 and never going back.(如果我们只看莎士比亚的戏剧,我们会发现他做的和其他人一样:在1597-1602年左右,他从喜欢9个词的演讲变成了喜欢4个词的演讲,并且再也没有回去过)”可知,划线词后以莎士比亚的戏剧为例,说明话语长度变短,并且再没有变长,推知,4词模式从此处于主流领导地位,划线词意思为:处于领先地位。故选B。
根据文章第四段“Our suggestion is that the playwrights(剧作家)learned progressively from one another how to represent more closely the speech lengths of everyday exchanges and found that audiences responded well to these. They started to focus less on strict writing rules and more on the liveliness of everyday speech.(我们的建议是,剧作家们逐渐从彼此学习如何更紧密地表达日常交流中的讲话长度,并发现观众对此反应良好。他们开始不那么关注严格的写作规则,而更多地关注日常话语的生动活泼)”可知,剧作家写作时更加重视日常用语的生动性,因此,他们改变写作风格,创造现实和人们易接受的语言。故选D。
35. 推理判断题。根据文章第五段“The move from a mode of nine words to a mode of four represents the shortened average speech, and thus a move to livelier drama in Yarkho’s terms.(从9个词的模式到4个词的模式代表了缩短的平均讲话,因此用Yarkho的话说,这是一种更生动的戏剧)”可知,Yarkho认为,将戏剧的词数变短,有助于以一种积极愉快的方式呈现戏剧。
G 37. E 38. F 39. A 40. C
36. 上文“And India is perhaps the most film-mad country in the world while it also has the lowest ratios of screens to human beings. (印度可能是世界上对电影最狂热的国家,但它的银幕与人口的比例也是最低的。)”指出在最喜欢看电影的国家大屏幕与人的配比却最低,这是一种现实的矛盾。选项G“这是那里无数矛盾中的又一个矛盾”承接总结上文,说明这是又一矛盾。故选G项。
37. 上文“If Muhammad could not go to the movies, the movies had to come to Muhammad. Twenty years ago, there were 1,400 odd touring cinemas in Pusegaon.(如果穆罕默德不能去看电影,电影就得来找穆罕默德。20年前,Pusegaon有1400多家巡回电影院)”借用穆罕默德一句名言“山不过来,我过去”,说明巡回影院的兴起和昌盛,选项E“正是在这样的世界中,巡回影院发挥了至关重要的作用”承接上文,说明巡回影院发挥了至关重要的作用。故选E项。
38. 下文“One is smartphone and internet expansion, which leads to the other reason for the collapse of the touring cinemas: (一个是智能手机和互联网的扩张,这导致了巡回电影院的崩溃的另一个原因)”主要介绍巡回影院衰落的两个原因,选项F“巡回电影院的衰落有两个相互关联的原因”引领下文,提出巡回影院的衰落有两个原因。故选F项。
39. 根据上文“One is smartphone and internet expansion, which leads to the other reason for the collapse of the touring cinemas: (一个是智能手机和互联网的扩张,这导致了巡回电影院的崩溃的另一个原因)”可知,下文要介绍流动影院衰落的另一个原因,结合后文“Sushil Chaudhary, the founder of a new chain of touring cinemas called Picture Time, is making a different bet on the possibilities of cinema. (Sushil Chaudhary,一个名为Picture Time的新连锁巡回电影院的创始人,正在对电影院的可能性进行不同的押注)”可知,“巡回电影”衰落主要原因应该是它没有与时俱进,选项A“它们没有随着时间的推移而改变。”符合题意。故选A项。
40. 上文“The touring cinema was nothing like the one in Pusegaon. (这个巡回电影院与Pusegaon的电影院完全不同。)”和下文“The picture was crystal clear and the sound used Dolby. (画面清晰,音效采用杜比)”说明这个巡回影院和Pusegaon的电影院不同,画质和音效都非常好,基础设施更优越,选项C“地板上铺了地毯,还有塑料椅子。”承上启下,介绍这家巡回影院的更优越的基础设施。故选C项。

1. (共10小题;每小题1.5分, 共15分)
阅读下面材料,在空白处填入适当的内容(1个单词)或括号内单词的正确形式。
This weekend a marathon took place in Salzburg, the city in 56 I’m currently living. I’ve never run for more than half an hour so I’m 57 (amaze) that some people manage to keep going for over four hours!
Running is 58 (difficulty) because you have to motivate yourself to keep going—it’s more solitary than a team sport. I used to get really out of 59 (breathe) while running and it didn’t feel good at all! Now I 60 (actual) enjoy going for a jog along the river in Salzburg, 61 (feel) my muscles working and breathing in the fresh air.
62 (challenge) exercise is always rewarding. Hiking is fun because all 63 hard work, walking uphill, comes at the beginning of the day. Then at the top of the mountain you can enjoy the view and some well-earned chocolate! At the end of the day, you feel like you 64 (achieve) something.
This just shows that perseverance pays off — 65 you work hard, you can succeed.
56. which 57. amazed 58. difficult 59. breath 60. actually
61. feeling 62. Challenging 63. the 64. have achieved 65. If
故填which。
故填the。
故填have achieved。
故填if。
________________________, I decide to be a volunteer teacher like him.
Inspired by Zhang Tian’s story/Inspired by Zhang Tian’s stories
根据句意可知,“inspire”意为“激励”,动词词性,句中有谓语动词“decide”,故空格处应用非谓语动词,“I”和“inspire”为动宾关系,故应用“inspire”的过去分词“inspired”作状语,“by Zhang Tian’s story/stories”表示“被张天的故事”,“Inspired by Zhang Tian’s story/stories”表示“被张天的故事激励”,句首单词首字母大写。故填Inspired by Zhang Tian’s story/stories。
67. Despite the difficulties, scientists hope to make more valuable discoveries that will enable the human race to ________ ________ ________ the future.
【答案】survive well into
对比中英文提示,空处为“延续生存”使用动词短语survive well into, enable sb to do sth,表示“使某人做某事”,不定式作宾语补足语,to后接动词原形,故填survive well into。
68. However, while such disasters brought much sadness and disappointment, ________ ________ ________ ________ the universe did not die.
【答案】the desire to explore
故填:the desire to explore。
69. The new leader has ________ ________ ________.
【答案】come to power
根据句意,故填come to power。
These disasters made everyone sad and ________, but the ________ to explore the universe never died.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Suddenly, I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder. __________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The following Thanksgiving day, we were ready for the play. ______________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly, I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder. I heard voices and a warm hand took mine. I looked up and saw concerned faces. Jim and several other classmates had come after me. “Please, don’t drop out...” they said and tried to comfort me. Later, the teacher found the troublemaker Peter, who loved making silly tricks. And he apologized to me. Encouraged by my friendly teacher and so many kind classmates, I went back on stage and finished the scene with no further interruptions.
The following Thanksgiving day, we were ready for the play. Throughout the performance, we could hear laughter from the audience from time to time. When the performance was over, they gave us a big round of applause. In the following weeks, schoolmates often came up to say, “You were good!” I was glad my hard work and determination as well as many people’s support had helped me to perform successfully. It positively shaped my later life.
