(一)导入(3 分钟)
T: Good morning, class! Today we are going to learn about Chinese and English names. Do you know the differences between them? Let's start our journey of discovery.
(二)自主学习(10 分钟)
1. Read the passage carefully and complete the table on your own.
A Chinese name includes a family name and a given name. Most family names date back to ancient times. They are usually from the names of a village, a state, or an official position. For example, Qi(齐)comes from the state name Qi, and Ouyang(欧阳) is the name of a township.
English names also have two parts: given names and family names. Different from Chinese names, the order is "given name(s) + family name". Sometimes, people have second or third given names to honour a family member or for other purposes.
English family names are usually from where the family lived, the way they looked, or the kind of work they did. For example, a family living with many trees and plants might take the name Green. If they had dark hair, they were called the Blacks or the Browns. And a person who had a good voice was named Singer.
A given name, either in Chinese or in English, carries the hope of a family for a baby. For example, "Yong" in Chinese and "Andy" in English both mean "brave";"Li" in Chinese and "Lily" in English "beautiful".
2. Given or family names? Write G for given and F for family.
刘一 司马昊宇 欧阳一菲菲
Jack Smith Shakespeare Emma
Wood John Green Jones Alice
3. Male or female names? Write M for male and F for female.
Iris Oliver Jim Sherry Laura Richard Diana Charles Bill Mindy
(三)小组讨论(10 分钟)
1. Students discuss the answers in groups and try to explain the reasons.
2. Teacher walks around the classroom to observe and offer help if necessary.
(四)展示与交流(10 分钟)
1. Each group selects a representative to present their answers and explanations on the blackboard.
S1: For the table about Chinese and English names, in Chinese, the order is family name + given name. The origin of family names can be from places, positions, etc. In English, the order is given name(s) + family name, and family names often come from where they lived, appearance, or work.
T: Excellent! That's a clear summary. What about the given and family names?
S2: For the given or family names, 刘一 is a given name, 司马昊宇 is a given name, and 欧阳一菲菲 is a given name. Jack is a given name, Smith is a family name, Shakespeare is a family name, and Emma is a given name. Wood is a family name, John is a given name, Green is a family name, Jones is a family name, and Alice is a given name.
T: Well done! How about the male and female names?
S3: Iris is female, Oliver is male, Jim is male, Sherry is female, Laura is female, Richard is male, Diana is female, Charles is male, Bill is male, and Mindy is female.
T: Great job! You all did a good job in your discussions.
