“Hi, old man,” he said, “It’s late and I must get home soon. How long will it take me to get to Carson from here?”
The old man answered, “If you go slowly, it will take only a short time. But if you go quickly, it will take a long time and you will not get there until late at night.”
“What a funny answer!” the man thought. He didn’t listen to the old man. He hit his horse to make it run as fast as possible. But soon, some coconuts began to fall from the wagon. Whether we’re young or old, rich or poor, we have one thing in common: The moon has always looked down at each of us when it lights up the night sky.
Just like a mirror(镜子), the moon reflects the sun’s light. It can also reflect people’s feelings. This is probably why the moon is always popular among Western and Chinese music, poems and other forms of literature. So when we look at the moon, what exactly do we see looking back at us? Well, that depends on who’s looking.
The ancient Greek poet(古希腊诗人) Sappho, for example, saw the moon as a woman who lit up space with her beauty. Later in England, however, the moon’s image(形象) was completely different. In the Middle Ages, English people often drank to get away from difficult life. In their eyes, the moon was a man who liked drinking. In London, at least three pubs(酒馆) were named Man in the Moon. It’s probably because the bright moon at night looks like a man’s red face after drinking. A popular song sung in pubs at that time even went, “Our man in the moon drinks wine...”
▲ Chinese Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai’s Quiet Night Thought reads, “I look up to the mountain moon, and then I look down and think of home.” Similarly, Zhang Jiuling wrote in another poem, ‘‘Looking at the moon and thinking of one far away.” So in Chinese culture, when people look at the moon, they may miss their hometown or someone. Very interesting, right?
( )38. What does the underlined word “reflects” mean?
A. B. C.
( )39. What does the moon probably stand for(代表) in ancient Greece?

A. The moon’s image(形象) in different cultures.
B. Different ways to praise the moon around the world.
C. The relationship between the moon and people in China.

Artificial intelligence AI(人工智能) is good for humans in many ways. It will make everyday tasks easier and bring good to us. It might be one of man’s greatest inventions.
However, like any other technology, AI will also bring risks. In February 2018, a group of AI experts(专家) got together to discuss the possible disadvantages(缺点) of AI. They found that “Every AI developed by the good persons is also helpful for the bad ones, too.” according to Quartz.
Their biggest worry was that the bad persons could use AI for bad things. One of the areas they looked at was the use of AI to create websites that could be used to steal people’s personal information. Another possibility is that AI programs could be used to hack software(软件) and break into computer secure systems(安全系统).
There are some other worries as well. It is possible that AI could be used to create fake(伪 造的) images and videos. Baidu, in fact, has developed a program called Deep Voice that can “clone(克隆)” anyone’s voice by studying a 3.7-second voice sample(样本).
Many leading people have expressed worries about AI. People like Bill Gates and Elon Musk have called for the industry to be more strictly controlled, as there are few laws right now on the use of AI.
However, this is going to change. In March 2018, the European Union plans to set up a group that will discuss the moral and ethical(伦理道德的) dangers of AI, and it will help to keep it safe for humans.
( )42. ________ might be one of man’s greatest inventions according to the passage.
A. Many industries B. AI C. Baidu
( )43. The underlined word “hack” in Paragraph 3 means “__________” in Chinese.
A. 保护 B. 对比 C. 入侵

Do you often yawn(哈欠)? There are about 20 reasons that scientists think are possible for yawning after research. They do not know exactly why yawning happens, but they do know many facts about yawning.
We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning will make a great difference to the people around you, when you see someone yawn, you yawn, too.
Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true. People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race. Why is that? In 2007, scientists found that a yawn can help a warm brain cool down.
Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When you yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch(强化) the muscles(肌肉) in your face, mouth, and neck. Your eardrums(耳膜) stretch too. Maybe this helps you to be quicker to notice things.
In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They think that opening the mouth very big can let good things in. When they breathe out, they think that bad things go out of the body with the air.
