Activity 2 Read for genre and structure
1、Skim the passage and choose the author’s purpose in writing the passage and give your reasons.
1 To help readers understand what it is like to be blind.
2 To make readers without disabilities appreciate what they have.
3 To persuade readers to care about the blind.
reasons:At the start of the passage, the author said it would be a blessing if each human being were stricken blind and deaf for a few days at some time during his early adult life. Darkness would make him more appreciative of sight; silence would teach him the joys of sound.
2、Read the passage and find out what the author would do if she could see. Use keywords to summarize.
Days
What would Helen do?
Day 1
see the kind people; see the enlightening books; intoxicate her eyes on the beauty of nature
Day 2
see a display of the progress of civilization; go to the museums; enjoy theater or movies
Day 3
observe people in their day-to-day life
Activity 4 Read the passage again and finish the following question
Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be stricken blind. And the same method can be applied to the other senses. Hear the music of voices, the song of a bird, the mighty strains of an orchestra, as if you would be stricken deaf tomorrow. Touch each object you want to touch as if tomorrow your tactile sense would fail. Smell the perfume of flowers, taste with relish each morsel, as if tomorrow you could never smell and taste again. But of all the senses, I am sure that sight must be the most delightful.
What sentence structure is used repeatedly? What figure of speech (修辞) is it?
Parallelism
How does this technique help to express the author’s emotions?
The use of parallelism in speech or writing allows speakers or writers to maintain a consistency within their work and creates a balanced flow of ideas. Moreover, parallelism can be used as a tool for persuasion.
If you must give up one sense, which one would you choose? Why? taste
hearing
smell
touch (tactile sense)
sight(vision)
