As today's high schoolers are facing too much homework, sports teams and clubs and high-rising
college costs, many people are rethinking the idea of high schoolers working. Are there still benefits of
having a job in high school? The answer is yes.
When I was 14 years old,my mother suggested that I get a job in order to pay for college.Unhappy
with my sporadic()babysitting work,I told my mother that,no matter what job I got,I'd never be
able to cover college costs on a high school worker's pay.
My mother smiled and told me that there were plenty of other reasons why I should get a job apart
from just the paycheck(工资支粟).So I found myself finally accepting a job as a swim instructor and
lifeguard at my town's public pool.I ended up working part-time at the pool through all four years of
high school.
Not everything about the job was marvelous.Actually, there were times I hated jumping in the pool
on cold mornings and lecturing kids on their bad behavior, but, like my mother said,I got many other
benefits from the job besides the paycheck.
At my job,I made lots of new friends, more than I had made in high school.I also learnt lots of
skills including CPR(心肺复苏法)training.I was also able to use my work experience to stand out from
other job applicants in college and get-a paid research job as a freshman in college.
For many high school students, there are many benefits of having a job.Not only will high school
jobs give you a way to make some money, meet new people, and develop some skills, you can also use
your teenage jobs to get yourself a better job in college.

Maybe you've thought about taking a break from social media()from time to time, but can
you imagine living without social media or cell phones completely? For the 182 people of Green Bank,
West Virginia,modern conveniences()like Wi-Fi,cellphones,microwaves,and even digital
cameras are things of the outside world.
Construction(建造)of the Green Bank Observatory(天文台)began in 19s7.One year later,,the

is next to the world's largest fully steerable radio telescope(可操纵射电望远镜),which allows
scientists to observe things like the stars in the sky.And in order for the radio telescope to listen to the

was common in the not-so-distant past. You can check out some of the discoveries the Green Bank
Telescope has made on the website, where you can go deeper into all that scientists are finding in their
studies and in the lives of the people of Green Bank.It is interesting to know that teens have little stress
and everyone has a deeper connection to other people and the natural world.
We can imagine what that would look like for us.Would we feel comfortable knocking on our
neighbor's door to ask for a cup of sugar? How often do we find ourselves focusing on our Facebook
when the people we love are sitting all around us?What could we get if we spent more time just in the
quiet presence of others or just with ourselves and a good book?

In May 2023,Google released()a new,AI-powered tool called "Help Me Write".The tool
automatically writes emails and forms letters based on a user's simple instructions. It promises to
greatly improve productivity.
Thanks to the advanced capabilities of newer large language models,Al-generated(text is
about to be used in most mass-market writing, from texting to email to general document generation.
AI is about to have a much larger hand in writing than ever before. It's also improving, and with enough
training over time,an AI tool may even be able to learn individual preferences and write in a more
personal style.
But AI-written text can also cause trouble.Language learning models have already created
controversy(争议)by generating unexpected content, from unsuitable advice to awful(糕的)
language, making clear the importance of careful editing.
A lesser talked-about problem is what AI-written text will do to language. The introduction of
Al-generated communication may also be the death knell for endangered languages.
A damage
C.reruse
I have been speaking Swiss German for half my life.Swiss German dialects (are oral
languages with no universal()spelling,but that hasn't stopped people from writing in them.
The introduction of AI-authored text changed part of the communication among my Swiss friend group.
Suddenly, nearly every Swiss German word in our emails and text messages was incorrectly changed.
Many of us ended up disabling the correction tools angrily. However, some people switched to official
German,a formal language that was supported by the tools. As AI writing becomes common, there's no
question that most of us will begin using formal German.
And that's not all.An AI tool may be able to combine words in creative ways,or learn a style from
past writing, but it won't naturally invent new slang ()We have no idea what this means for
language development.
So,as we adopt AI-powered writing tools,it's worth thinking about how they will influence both
the conservation and the progress of language.
12.Why was"Help Me Write"mentioned in paragraph 1?
A To provide an example.
B.To introduce the topic.
C To advertise an AI tool.
D.To support an argument.
13.What might be the disadvantage of AI-generated text?
A.It is a little dimfcult.
B.It uses words incorrectly.
C.It provides answers slowly.
D.Its content is improper.
14.What does the underlined part"the death knell"in paragraph 4 mean?
A.The sign of the end.
B.The sign of progress.
C.The chance to get improvement.
D.The chance to become universal.
15.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To show the progress of AI in writing.
B.To show how to properly use AI writing tools.
C.To call on people to reduce the use of AI writing tools.
D.To present the possible problems brought by AI writing tools.
