Traveling alone can be daunting. I have traveled by myself many times but, on every occasion, there was someone to meet me at the other end of the bus, train or plane journey. This time was different.
Last week I had a holiday, from work, but none of my friends had the same week off. I decided that I still wanted to do something, so I booked a train ride to Toronto and reserved a bed in a hostel for one week.
One week by myself. Would I be lonely? Would I be bored? Quite the opposite. In fact, there are many benefits that come from traveling alone. Firstly, I was able to do whatever I wanted. I spent hours in museums that would have seemed boring and dull to some of my friends. I walked all around the city, which some people may have found too exhausting. Instead of relying on someone else to remember directions or to suggest activities to do, I discovered my independence and developed map-reading skills that I didn’t know I had. I could get up and go to sleep whenever I wanted and I didn’t have to wait for anyone else to shower and get ready every morning. Being in the safe environment of a hostel with like-minded travelers also gives a great opportunity to meet new people from all over the world, which can help combat loneliness.
Despite the benefits, I found that there were also some disadvantages of traveling alone. I missed having someone to talk to and to bounce ideas off. Experiences are often more enjoyable if they are shared, and part of the fun of traveling is the memories you have afterwards. Without a travel partner, I won’t be able to laugh about and remember my Toronto adventure with a friend or family member in years to come.
In addition, eating in a restaurant or cooking in the hostel was less fun on my own.
I am very proud of myself for traveling alone, and I had a fantastic time in Toronto. However, in the future, I think I will always prefer to travel with another person or in a small group. Though, maybe it depends on who you travel with. I would rather be by myself than with someone who is lazy, difficult and argumentative.
24. What happened to the author last week?
A. She traveled alone to Toronto during a work vacation.
B. She felt lonely away from home and missed her family.
C. She found someone meeting her during a trip to Toronto.
D. She made a trip with her friend during the same week to Toronto.
25. We can learn from the article that the author ________.
A. finds it boring and dull to visit museums
B. has already acquired great map-reading skills
C. believes she could benefit by traveling alone more
D. enjoys sharing traveling stories with family and friends
26. What can we know from the last two paragraphs?
A. She is proud of cooking in a hostel.
B. She will find it fun to travel with anyone.
C. She favors travelling with good company.
D. Argumentative travelers will be ideal choices.
27. Which of the following words can best describe the author?
A. Optimistic and talkative. B. Humorous and generous.
C. Ambitious and imaginative. D. Enthusiastic and independent.
C
A new study published in the journal Educational Studies shows that the elementary school a child attends has almost no influence on their desire to progress to higher education.
The research was carried out by Josip Šabić and Boris Jokic at the Centre for Educational Research and Development of the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb, Croatia. The authors wanted to discover the main factors affecting pupils’ intention to continue to higher education as they reach the end of elementary school.
To find out children’s aims, they asked just over 1,000 pupils aged 14-15 at 23 elementary schools in Zagreb to complete three separate questionnaires during their last two years at elementary school. The researchers also obtained information on the pupils’ academic grades, as well as on the size of each school and its classes, the grade point average (GPA) for each school, and property prices in the area around each school as a measure of socioeconomic status.
The study revealed that none of the school-level factors, including school and class size, the GPA of the school and property prices, had any influence on the desire to continue to higher education. In contrast, several factors related to parents and home life, such as parental educational aspirations, maternal (母亲的) academic support and having a desk to work on, did have an influence. As did gender, with girls more likely than boys to want to continue to higher education. And while school-level factors didn’t have any influence, performance at school did: high academic grades were the single strongest predictor of a pupil’s desire to continue to higher education, while enjoying school was also an important factor.
“The major finding arising from the present study is that none of the school level variables used in our analysis contributes to the explanation of pupils’ aspirations (志向) for higher education,” said Josip Šabić. “Another important finding is that parents can influence their child’s aspirations by expressing their expectations regarding the child’s educational path and by providing the basic conditions for completing homework and learning.”
28. What does the research focus on?
A. Where do pupils go for help in choosing college?
B. Who gives pupils more support to go to college?
C. What makes pupils choose to attend college?
D. Which do pupils like most in choosing further education?
29. Which of the following do the researchers care least in designing the research?
A. Class sizes. B. Family incomes.
C. Property prices. D. Academic grades.
30. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. The GPA of school blocks pupils from going to college.
B. Gender has little influence on choosing a college.
C. Decisions of parents make pupils choose what to do.
D. Pupils’ preference to their school is important.
31. What does Josip Šabić stress in the last paragraph?
A. School level variables.
B. Financial support to pupils.
C. Parental academic supports.
D. Learning environments for pupils.
D
If you had to pick one, who do you think is greater in terms of their contributions to the Western world: British physicist Isaac Newton or Greek philosopher Aristotle?
Chances are that you’d find it hard to make a decision, at least right away.
But somehow, when choosing a major in college, the line between the two areas of study couldn’t be clearer. Science majors — the likes of technology, engineering, math — are considered to be more practical choices because of the wealth of opportunities, while those who choose a liberal arts (文科) major — language, music, philosophy — may have more difficulty finding a job.
But perhaps we should look at liberal arts studies in another way to understand its value. In the BBC’s documentary Civilizations, for example, presenters (主持人) take us to 3I countries on six continents to appreciate human creativity, such as Angkor Wat (吴哥窟) in Cambodia, and the Suleymaniye mosque (苏莱曼清真寺) in Turkey.
To Simon Schama, one of the presenters, human civilization isn’t just about technological inventions or meeting basic needs, but about creating things for the purpose of leaving a person’s “mark of their existence for future humans to witness and admire”.
By comparing science and liberal arts, we’re drawing “an artificial line” between the two, wrote Loretta Jackson-Hayes, an associate professor of chemistry at Rhodes College. And to some of the greatest innovators (革新者) in history, this line never existed in the first place.
Leonardo da Vinci, for example, was just as successful a scientist as he was a painter. He was so interested in biology that he drew the famous Vitruvian Man, part of his study of the human body. Then there’s Steve Jobs, who, despite being an engineer, was also an artist. He summarized his view on the relationship between science and the arts in 2011: “It’s in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not enough — it’s technology married with liberal arts, married with the humanities, that provides us with the result that makes our heart sing.”
32. What advantage are science majors believed to have over liberal arts majors?
A. Better job opportunities. B. More opportunities for practice.
C. More choices to satisfy students’ interests. D. Greater chance for making contributions to society.
33. Where does the value of liberal arts studies lie according to Simon Schama?
A. Drawing people’s attention to human history.
B. Getting inspiration for technological inventions.
C. Creating technological inventions for the future:
D. Finding creativity in what ancestors have created.
34. Which point does the last paragraph support?
A. Science plays an important role in advancing liberal arts.
B. Great innovators must know both science and liberal arts.
C. Liberal arts studies are essential to inventing new things for humans.
D. People can achieve great things through both science and liberal arts.
35. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?
A. Liberal arts’ hidden value B. Technological inventions
C. Contributions to the Western world D. The greatest innovators in history

范文1:
Dear Alice,
I’m flattered to know you have such confidence in my opinions that you would write to me for advice, but more importantly I’m sorry to read that you’re having this problem with your parents.
I think that you should explain to your parents that you are mature enough to travel without their supervision. It’s natural for parents to worry, so why don’t you show them where you plan to go, who you’re going with and where you will stay. It might also help if you introduce your friends to reassure them. Finally provide them with the contact details so they can get in touch with you.
Parents often resist their children growing up. It’s up to you to gently show them it is time to loosen the strings.
I hope this advice will be useful to you and good luck with your decision.
Yours,
Li Hua
范文2:
Dear Alice,
I can feel from your email that this issue with your parents is greatly affecting you and really appreciate that you trust me enough to want my advice.
Coincidentally, I met a similar situation last summer. Initially, like you, I really didn’t want to go travelling with my parents. But then I thought of things from their point of view. I go to university next year, so, for them, this may have been the last time we’d all travel together as a family. I understood that rather than trying to control me, they just wanted to spend more time with me, so I chose to go and we had a fantastic time together!
I think you shouldn’t be in such a hurry to grow up. Treasure the time you have with your parents now as neither you nor they will be around forever.
I hope my own experience helps you and that you find a solution.
Yours,
Li Hua
