Identifying Topic
Sentences and Supporting Details
A topic sentence states the general idea or the main poit of a text or paragraph. Supporting details give more information about that topic.
Read the text to get the general idea.
Identify one sentence for each argument that states this general idea. This is the topic sentence.
Read the text again. Look for extra information that supports the topic sentences, e.g. example, reasons. These are the supporting details.

1. Look at the sentence from paragraph 2 in the first blog post, "It is these skills that enable us to develop lifelong friendships". What does "these" refer to? Do you agree with the statement? Why or why not?
The word "these" refers to social skills, like concentrating or showing kindness to others.

2. In the second blog post, what does Eileen Kennedy-Moore mean when she says that online friends "fill holes real-life friends can't"? Give your reasons.
Online communication is a solution when there are difficulties with face-to-face communication, i.e. when people live far apart (and are friends or have common interests), a person suffering from social anxiety may find it easier to talk to people online, etc.
