Auntie Ngeam is one of a third generation of indigo craftswomen (靛蓝工匠) in a family from the Phuan, a people known for their handmade textiles (纺织品). A large Phuan community settled in Phrae in northern Thailand in the late 19th century and brought their indigo craftsmanship with them.
Auntie Ngeam took over a small business from her parents more than 30 years ago and has played a key role in updating Thailand’s indigo clothing over the past decade. “Every shop on the street had plain blue shirts, so I started thinking about how I could stand out,” she says. “I tried using indigo to tie-dye (扎染) modern clothes.” Now in Thai markets across the country, the indigo tie-dyed clothes have become a phenomenon.
Auntie Ngeam also works together with the local government to promote the local indigo industry via tie-dye workshops among tourists. For the past six years, the town has hosted the Phrae Craft festival, showing small, independent indigo craftsmen’s work. The festival is run by Nanthanit Boyd, a former student of Auntie Ngeam’s. Today, Boyd is pushing the boundaries of indigo textile fashion, bringing designs to the world stage.
With the increasing acceptance of indigo craftsmanship among young people, intergenerational indigo businesses have become ubiquitous in Phrae. Banmatjai Indigo Workshop is one of such growing businesses, which was opened by the women of the Suchanok family 10 years ago, when the eldest daughter Chidchanok Suchanok returned home after graduation. “I wondered why my generation wasn’t appreciating indigo,” Chidchanok says. “It’s our heritage and a local resource.”
Phrae has been reborn as a craft center, bringing more jobs to the locals and attracting both domestic and international travelers. “The creativity is already here; all we need to do is make it shine brighter so people can see it,” says Boyd.
4. What can we learn about Auntie Ngeam?
A. She enjoys touring all over the country. B. She is the founder of her family business.
C. She pioneers the indigo tie-dyed clothes. D. She is in charge of the Phrae Craft festival.
5. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Private. B. Widespread. C. Challenging. D. Conservative.
6. What can be inferred about the indigo industry from Boyd’s words?
A. It unites the local communities. B. It guarantees the locals a richer life.
C. It deserves to be further promoted. D. It appeals to the younger generation.
7. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Rapid Development of Phrae’s Tourism
B. Exploration of the History of Indigo Industry
C. Revolutionary Progress: the Tomorrow of Phrae
D. From Tradition to Trend: Phrae’s Indigo Industry
C
For years, we’ve been teaching a class on music and the mind. At the start of each semester, we’ve asked the students to complete a survey on their favorite songs and artists. Students’ favorite songs and artists get longer and more varied each year and their playlists barely overlap (重叠).
Indeed, listening to music is a deeply private and personal experience nowadays and even more so with the introduction of the iPod and smartphones. When teenagers listen to music via streaming, artificial intelligence and social media platforms team up to suggest personalized playlists for them.
Some young people feel that AI generated playlists make them exposed to something dull. Their playlists are populated with songs and artists they’ve never heard of before, yet they all sound similar. In the past, they might not have noticed such a situation. Their musical consumption was narrowly dominated by the“Top-40” artists. However, AI generated playlists have changed this, since a wider range of music is available. If they think their AI influenced playlists are unappealing, they still have the ability to search for new music. Just because AI can suggest songs, it doesn’t prevent them researching and discovering music on their own, or sharing playlists. Anything that exists, they can find. The store is always open.
Music listening and preferences play an important role in young people’s transition (过渡) from childhood to adulthood, two seemingly opposing but vital processes: forming a unique identity, while at the same time becoming part of a community. However, AI generated playlists have the potential to challenge this transition. So does AI make it easier to differentiate the self, but harder to bond with others?
Fears of new technologies are commonplace. For example, the decline of scheduled network TV erased lots of common ground for discussion, so will 50 million Americans ever again tune in to watch the series ending ofa TV show, as they did for Friends in 2004?
If AI is, indeed, contributing to the transformation of teenagers’ shared listening experiences, then AI playlists are more than a convenient way to discover their next favorites. They are a revolution worth paying attention to.
8. What makes teenagers’ music listening experiences more private?
A. The popularization of music education. B. The lack of interaction among teenagers.
C. The easy access to musical instruments. D. The extensive use of electronic devices.
9. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about concerning AI generated playlists?
A. Their advantages. B. Their accessibility.
C. Their limitations. D. Their development.
10. What challenge may AI generated playlists present?
A. They result in the decline of network TV. B. They prevent teens choosing similar songs.
C. They make identifying oneself impossible. D. They provide less for teens to communicate.
11. Why does the author mention Friends in Paragraph 5?
A. To show the potential social influence of AI.
B. To tell us the predictability of new technology.
C. To explain people’s willingness to accept AI.
D. To emphasize its popularity among Americans.

When Mammola and Ficetola went to an ecology conference in 2021, they met a scientist with an unusual complaint. Jennifer Anderson, an expert in aquatic fungi(水生真菌), said that the subject of her research was not available in emoji(表情符号) form. “If you are doing the important work of trying to save whales, you can use pictures or images to help you communicate this,” said Anderson. “If you are working to save the aquatic fungi, you first must let people know that they exist, and then describe in words what they look like.”
Struck by their conversation with Anderson and alarmed at how unusual species were ignored, the Italian scientists set out to find out how well species were represented in the emoji library. The answer wasn’t satisfactory at all: animals were well represented by available emojis but plants, fungi and microorganisms(微生物) were not. “Our findings confirm a typical prejudice in biodiversity research and a feature of human psychology,” said Mammola. “We usually feel more caring and sympathetic towards living things that are genetically closer to us.”
“A good representation of species on social media can arouse interest in unfamiliar organisms, greatly help publicize the message that biodiversity is much more than just cats, dogs, lions and pandas, and indirectly help conservation efforts,” said Mammola. “There are an impressive number of organisms, and all of them play a fundamental role on our planet, even the ones we know less about.”
Some scientists have taken steps to describe their research on their phone keyboards with images instead of words. However, according to Mammola, the number of animal species represented rose from 45 in 2015 to 92 in 2022, yet the number of plants, fungi and microorganisms represented barely increased.
Anderson said she wanted emojis for organisms like aquatic fungi as reflections of increased public awareness and indicators of their ecological value. “Having an emoji indicates that an organism is valued or important enough to be part of daily conversation” she said.
12. What did Anderson complain about?
A. Lack of available emojis for aquatic fungi.
B. People’s disinterest in studying aquatic fungi.
C. People’s unwillingness to save aquatic fungi.
D. Difficulty in describing aquatic fungi in words.
13. Why are animal species better represented than other species?
A. They are more common species. B. They matter more to biodiversity.
C. They encourage human sympathy. D. They help remove human prejudice.
14 What is the benefit of a good representation of species on social media?
A. Facilitating communication between scientists.
B. Making biodiversity research more satisfactory.
C. Deepening people’s understanding of biodiversity.
D. Helping people grasp complex concepts of science.
15. What is Mammola’s attitude toward the progress of emoji biodiversity?
A. Unclear. B. Unsatisfied. C. Doubtful. D. Hopeful.
第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Wildlife documentaries are known for offering breathtaking images of animals in their natural habitats. You might be thinking that these shows offer a totally real portrayal (插绘) of these animals — an objective window into their lives as they hunt, rest and raise their young. ____16____ While the images we see are filmed on location, many of the sounds are recorded in a sound studio and added to the programs later by human “Foley artists (拟音师)”.
____17____ Usually, documentary filmmakers can film their subjects from a great distance, but they typically can’t get close enough to capture clear sounds without disturbing the animals. ____18____ There will probably be background noises such as crew members chatting or walking around if sounds are recorded on location. In other cases, the animals might make sounds of a frequency or volume that most microphones simply can’t capture clearly.
“Foley artists” will use a variety of tools to simulate (模拟) the sounds made by animals. And most of them will create the close — up sounds of animals chewing or yawning with their own mouths. These sounds are created as the artist watches the videos, making sure they perfectly match the actions they’re paired with. ____19____ Animal cries — which are far too complex to be simulated — will have to be taken from library recordings.
Watching “Foley artists” at work on wildlife projects gives me a thrill like the one we get when we see how a magic trick is done. ____20____ Sounds have the ability to affect how we understand a given species. The way certain animals are portrayed in popular media may affect support for conservation efforts.
A. But this isn’t quite the case.
B. There are some exceptions, though.
C. The Foley process involves a large team.
D. “Foley artists” are creative and resourceful.
E. Wildlife documentaries also tend to require large crews.
F. Admittedly, the significance of the technique goes further.
G. This is an unavoidable outcome of modern wildlife filmmaking.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My friend Jane, a cheerful, humorous and outgoing person, worked for a charity. One day in early December, she called, saying she was putting together some people to sing inspiring holiday songs to some unfortunate families and chat with them on New Year’s Day to cheer them up. Jane invited my husband and me to join them.
Although I hadn’t sung in any choir (合唱团) for years, I always enjoyed singing. I was confident with proper songbooks, much rehearsal (排练) time, a good director, and a guitar, we would be great. I told Jane we’d be happy to join her choir. But as she described her plan, my enthusiasm reduced. Jane felt one rehearsal would be enough, and since nobody in the group played the guitar, our voices would be enough. She didn’t know what we’d be singing, but she’d come up with something. I had always admired her free spirit, but I doubted her plan, already regretting my quick decision and worrying.
Then, what was worse, Jane called one afternoon, saying our rehearsal would have to be canceled because two members got sick, and provided a list of simple songs for us to practice singing at home. Noticing my concern, she told me what mattered was that we were there and that everything would be fine.
At home, my husband and I busily decorated our house for our holiday and sometimes set aside some time for our song practice.
Before long, the choir’s singing date arrived. That day, Jane, together with five of us, drove toward our first destination. We would be visiting an old couple who lived alone. The wife had been receiving cancer treatments. I had no idea whether our performance would help make their day.
Soon, we walked through the snow and reached a small, simple house.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

An old man who looked worried opened the door.

My Break, My Choice
Extending the breaks between classes in high school can bring numerous benefits to seniors like us. The longer intervals enable us to truly relax and recharge, crucial for maintaining focus and productivity during intense study sessions. Additionally, it fosters social interactions with our classmates, thus contributing to our overall health.
To make the extended breaks more engaging, I propose such “Fun Break” activities as mind-relaxing games like chess or puzzles, short storytelling sessions, or even music sessions where students can share their favorite songs. Such activities not only provide fun and relaxation but also stimulate creativity and teamwork.
In conclusion, extended breaks with creative and fun options can significantly enhance our overall school experience, making learning more enjoyable and effective. Let’s embrace these changes and make our breaks count!

【答案】One possible version:
An old man who looked worried opened the door. He seemed a bit surprised to see a group of people at his doorstep on such a cold winter day. We introduced ourselves and explained the purpose of our visit. He hesitated for a moment but then welcomed us in with a warm smile, gesturing for us to come inside. In the living room, a woman who looked pale greeted us, the table before her littered with medicine. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pity, unsure how to connect with the couple. To my relief, Jane cheerfully started the conversation, guiding it towards light-hearted and enjoyable topics. Finally, all talked, including the couple, whose faces gradually lit up.
After the cheerful conversation, we began to sing. As we sang our simple songs, the wife’s eyes sparkled with tears of joy, and the husband’s uneasy expression softened into a gentle grin. We didn’t have a guitar to accompany us, and our voices weren’t perfect, but the sincerity in our songs filled the room with a sense of comfort. After our performance, the couple thanked us with tears in their eyes, expressing how our visit had made their day. It was then that my worries totally melted away and I realized they didn’t need a grand performance. The simple act of chatting, singing, and being present was enough to uplift their spirits. Joyfully, we said goodbye and drove to our next destination.
