Sometimes children need extra help to learn at school. In some schools in England, volunteer tutors work with children who are struggling to learn and write. The tutors spend time with them, away from their class, to help them learn to love books and enjoy school. These children can then become more confident about school and learning.
Lorna is six years old and struggling with her reading and writing. This is a report from her tutor, Mrs Snow, who has been visiting her at school.
When I first started working with Lorna, she was very shy and didn’t really enjoy reading.
Her class teacher told me she was very quiet in class. During our lessons together we spent lots of time reading books. We also played word games to help with her spelling and writing. As time went on, Lorna began to relax and became more confident. She realized that reading and writing could be lots of fun!
Lorna even wrote a book by herself about Beauty and the Beast. She also drew some lovely pictures to explain it. What great progress!
Her favorite reading book was called Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. She was very happy every time we sat down to read it!
Her class teacher is very pleased with how well Lorna is doing. Lorna proudly tells her classmates about what she has done in each lesson. I think they all want to join in as well!
I am very pleased that Lorna is also spending more time at home reading with her mom and dad. They are all enjoying reading together. Lorna tells me that they have bought her a special bookmark to use in her reading books.

At the age of fifteen, both his legs had been crushed by a carriage. From that time forth he begged, dragging himself along the roads.
In the villages people hardly gave him anything--- he was too well-known. Everyone had grown tired of seeing him---day after day for forty years, dragging his disabled and ugly body from door to door on his wooden crutches. He lived like the animals of the field. He was among people, yet loved by no one and cared by no one. They nicknamed him “Bell” because he hung between his two crutches like a bell.
For two days he had eaten nothing. No one gave him anything now. Women shouted at him from their doorsteps when they saw him coming:
“Go away, you good-for-nothing beggar! Why, I gave you a piece of bread only three days ago!”
It was December and a cold wind blew over the fields. Now and then he sat down for a few moments’ rest. He only got one wish---to eat---but no one offered anything. For three hours he went on his painful journey but received not a half penny for his pains.

Just as he reached it, he received a strong hit in the back which made him let go of the crutches and sent him flying half a meter away. The owner of the hens, kept kicking him angrily. The other villagers came up and joined the beating. In the end,“Bell”, half dead, was shut in the town jail.
