These days, football is one of the most popular sports in the world. Given that
Neil Armstrong wanted to take a football to the Moon, we could even say that it is
also the most popular sport out of this world! The history of the game goes back over
two thousand years to Ancient China. It was then known as cuju (kick ball), a game
using a ball of animal skins with hair inside. Goals were hung in the air. Football as
we know it today started in Great Britain, where the game was given new rules.
That football is such a simple game to play is perhaps the basis of its popularity.
It is also a game that is very cheap to play. You don’t need expensive equipment; even
the ball doesn’t have to cost much money. All over the world you can see kids playing
to their hearts’ content with a ball made of plastic bags.
Another factor behind football’s global popularity is the creativity and excitement
on the field. It is fun enough to attract millions of people. You do not have to be a fan
to recognize the skill of professional players or to feel the excitement of a game
ending with a surprising twist.
What’s more, football has become one of the best ways for people to
communicate: it does not require words, but everyone understands it. It breaks down
walls and brings people together on and off the field.
“Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, ...” said Bill Shankly,
the famous footballer and manager. “I can tell you with certainty it is much, much
more important than that.” This might sound funny, but one only has to think about
the Earth to realize that our planet is shaped like a football.
4.What can we know from paragraph one?
A.Some people like to play football on the Moon.
B.The game called cuju was given new rules today.
C.Cuju is different from football as we know it today.
D.Many people like playing a ball made of plastic bags.
5. According to the author, there are _____ reasons why football became so popular in
the world.
A. 3 B. 4 C. 5 D. 6
6. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Football is round.
B. Football is more than just a sport.
C. Our planet is shaped like a football.
D. What Bill Shankly said sounds funny.
7. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To talk about the history of football.
(高一英语笔试) 第 3 页 共 8 页
B.To express his/her love of football.
C.To explain why football is such a popular game.
D.To prove that he/she is a professional football fan.

It had been a “long” and hard walk from home to the subway station for teenager
Mandy Chan when she first put on hanfu in public. Chan is one of the founders of
hanfu in Hong Kong. “It was a set with a cream-colored shirt, a brown jacket in
China’s Ming dynasty style and a red pleated skirt made by me,” she recalled recently,
almost 10 years later.
It was not the looks from others but her limited knowledge on the traditional
Chinese clothing that had made her uncomfortable. Chan added, “If anyone had asked
what I was wearing, or the history behind it, I would have been afraid I couldn’t tell
them the whole picture.”
However, her uneasiness had gradually gone with more in-depth research on
traditional Chinese culture. Hanfu was the traditional clothing of China’s Han ethnic
group that was formed in the main residential areas of the Han people in ancient
China. The historical clothing has untold stories and ideas in every detail. The cutting
and stitching line in the middle part of hanfu fits the spine (脊椎) of the human body
and helps people to dress properly. This design, which has transcended (超越) itself as
mere decoration, points to the qualities of the wearers as upright and moderate (温和
的) individuals.,
“Instead of imitating people like what I used to do, I have jumped out of my
comfort zone and found the style that suits me best,” Chan said. “Through hanfu, I
have found myself and so many unexplored things in my life.” Chan added that she
had found her lifelong passion through hanfu, which is a goal and dream that has
never been absent from her life. Chan found she was not alone after falling in love
with hanfu. She believes that classics will never go out of style and she herself has
incorporated (使并入) hanfu into her everyday life.
8. Why did Chan feel uneasy when she first wore hanfu in public?
A. Her clothes were worn out.
B. She didn’t like looks from others.
C. Her clothes didn’t fit her properly.
D. She had a limited knowledge of hanfu.
9. What is special about hanfu in design according to paragraph 3?
A. It never goes out of fashion.
B. It shows personal qualities of its wearers.
C. It has many different styles for choice.
D. It appeals to people of all ages and social groups.
10. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Hanfu has a strong influence on Chan.
B. Hanfu will be a big business in China.

C. Hanfu will take the lead in the fashion.
D. Hanfu allows her to get to know more people.

With the world reporting more cases of Omicron variant (奥密克戎变种) on
Tuesday and more Western countries hurry up to close their doors. China, where so
far only Hong Kong has reported cases, is calmly and confidently responding to
possible challenges with vaccine (疫苗) study and the experience got from China’s
zero-COVID policy.
Chinese observers said that China will benefit from its COVID-19 policy of
preventing cases from home and abroad which continues to show its unique
advantages facing Omicron. In comparison, observers reminded that Western
countries are likely to be affected by Omicron if the variant is highly infectious (感染
的), with their unscientific epidemic (流行病) control measures and overconfidence
in vaccines, which has led to the rapid spread of the new variant, an expert told Global
Times on Tuesday.
But to some Western media, China’s policy means isolation (隔离). CNN said in
a report on Monday that as much of the world started to learn to live with COVID-19,
China"looked increasingly isolated by comparison”.
Chinese observers said that the West’s choice of dealing with COVID-19 is a
helpless action as they cannot possibly clear their domestic cases with large numbers
of locally transmitted cases, and residents are unwilling to team up with governments.
In some countries, even the leaders do not follow their own rules.
Biden on Monday call on Americans to wear masks, but he has come under fire
for flouting his own rules. He was pictured without a mask covering his face over the
Thanksgiving weekend in a shop that had a sign on the window requiring customers
to wear face coverings, the BBC reported.
12. What is the zero-COVID policy?
A. The vaccine can kill all the variants of the epidemic.
B. No one goes out and people will close the doors for isolation.
C. It is a useful measure to reduce the local infection.
D. It is a serious control method to clear the cases.
13. What does the underlined word “flouting” mean?
A. observing B. hating C. going against D. following
14. Which means does the author NOT use to develop the passage?
A. By following the time order. B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparisons. D. By quoting.
15. What is the main idea of the report?
A. Western countries are likely to be affected by Omicron.
B. Despite the Omicron variant, it is still under control in China.

C. Western choice is helpless when faced with COVID-19.
