May you be happy! He may not have finished the work. (三)ought to和should。 Young people ought to respect the old. (表示义务、责任) You ought to lose some weight. (表示劝告、建议) It ought to be a fine day tomorrow. “ought not to+have+过去分词”表示不应该做某事却做了。 【例】You ought to have asked him (but you didn’t). (实际上你没有问) You ought not to have fight with your brother (but you did). Children should (ought to/are supposed to)respect their parents. (表示责任义务) You should see a doctor. (表示建议) You should apologize to her. (表示劝告) They should be on the way home now, I think. I need them tomorrow afternoon. --They should be ready by 12:00. I insisted that she should keep the secrets for me. He suggested that she should come another day. He demanded that Gabe should start working at once. If I should go there, I’ll bring you a present. Why should you think so? It’s wonderful that you should get the first place in this competition. I’m disappointed that you should get angry for this. I’m disappointed that you got angry for this. 6.ought to和should都表示义务或责任,意思是“应该”,通常可以互换,但ought to比should的语气略强。 【例】I should exercise more. (主观看法) Your son ought to be inoculated against smallpox. 对于ought to,在否定式中用ought not to或ought to,在疑问句中将ought提到主语之前。 【例】Ought we(to)have done it? 我们本该做此事吗?(此处to可以省略) You ought to be talking so much, Annie. (四)must和have to。 1. I have to give up smoking.(客观需要:可能是由于身体或其他客观原因而不得不戒烟) I must give up smoking.(主观想法:自己觉得有必要戒烟) 【注意】询问对方的意愿时应用must,而回答must引出的问句时,如果是否定的回答,不能用mustn’t,而要用needn’t或don’t have to。 【例】--Must we hand in our homework today? --Yes, you must.(No, you don’t have to.)是的。 You don’t have to tell him about it. You mustn’t tell him about it. She must be ill. She looks pale. He can’t be that foolish. have to有人称、数、时态的变化,即有have to, has to, had to三种形式,否定式需要借助助动词,即“助动词do/does/did+not+have to+其他”。疑问式为“助动词Do/Does/Did+主语+have to+其他?” 【例】We will have to wait for two hours. John missed the bus, so he had to take the next one. He must have known our secret. He can’t have known our secret. Why must you always bother me? She never dare speak in public. How dare you do such a thing? 否定式是在dare前加don’t(doesn’t, didn’t),一般疑问句用do(does, did)提问。dare to do sth.意为“敢做某事”;dare sb. to do sth. He didn’t dare to say what he thought. I dared him to jump into the river. You needn’t go if you don’t want to. Need he do it at once? 否定式是在need前加don’t(doesn’t, didn’t),一般疑问句用do(does, did)提问。 【例】Plants need light in order to survive. He needs to finish it this evening. They needn’t have borrowed the money. 【例】Your hair needs cutting. The flowers need watering. (六)used to的用法。 1. We used to be good friends, but fell apart a year ago. Used you to live with your parents? Did you use to live with your parents? Mary used not to be a diligent student. Mary didn’t use to be a diligent student. Usedn’t you to be a teacher? Didn't you use to be a teacher? She used to be very fat, usedn’t she? / didn’t she? (七)had better和would better。 二者的基本用法是其后均接动词原形;had better的缩写形式是-’d better, would rather的缩写形式是-’d rather;had better的否定形式是had better not, would rather的否定形式would rather not;在否定疑问句和反意疑问句中使用助动词hadn’t/wouldn’t。 【例】We’d better leave now or we’ll miss the bus. I would rather not tell you. 【表格对比总结】 情态动词 说明 例句 must (语气最强)表义务“一定,必须”,这在说话人主观看来是没有选择余地的 可用have to或have got to来代替,但have to或have got to强调客观,有“不得不,只好”的意思 You must study hard. You have to study hard. 客观必须 表推测,表示“一定(是)······” She must be James girlfriend. can 表能力,“能,能够” 注:be able to也是表示能力,但是强调的是具体的能力,而can表示理论上的能力 She can dance.
