Animals have inspired humans to try new things. For example, we want to learn about creatures that live deep
in the ocean, so we like to go underwater. Here are some amazing animals you can see on our planet!
Volcano snails are cool little snails that live where it's really hot, like near volcanoes. They
have hard shells to protect them and special ways to stay safe from the heat. They're like
small heroes in a world of fire and rock
Pufferfish are small, round fish with big eves and a funny shape. When in danger, they can
fill with water and become three times bigger. They are famous for being poisonous, so
people need to be careful when eating them
Woodpeckers are birds that peck (啄) on trees to find food. They can peck very fast, up to
20 times a second! Their heads are special, so they don't get hurt when they peck a lot. Their
tongues are very long, which helps them catch worms inside trees
Spadefoot toads are special frogs with big, flat feet that look like shovels (铲子). They use
these feet to dig into the dirt when it's hot outside. They can hide underground for a long
time without coming out
Platypuses are special animals from Australia. They look like a mix of a duck and a beaver
They lay eggs, which is unusual for mammals (哺孔动物). They have a flat bill to swim and
find food in water, and soft fur to keep them warm

On May 23, US carmaker Tesla began building a new factory in Shanghai. The factory will begin to produce
Megapack batteries in early 2025.
Megapacks are powerful batteries. Each unit can store 3,9oo kWh (千瓦时) of energy, enough to power on
average 3,6oo homes for one hour. The batteries can be used to run factories or homes when the need for power is
high, or during a blackout (停电). The new factory in Shanghai will be developed in stages. In the first stage, it will
produce about 10,ooo Megapack units every year.
Megapacks are now used in over 60 countries. Tesla already has a factory in California. The new one in
Shanghai is the first of its kind built by it outside the US. It will cover an area of about 2oo,ooo square metres. Tesla
has reportedly spent 1.45 billion yuan on the project
"I believe the new factory is a milestone (里程碑) for both Shanghai and Tesla," said the company's vice
president Tao Lin. "In a more open environment, we can ereate a new Tesla speed at the Megapack factory, and
provide the global market with a great number of energy-storage batteries made in China."
Tao has a good reason to say that. In 2019, Tesla built its first overseas automobile factory in Shanghai. Afte
just a few years, it became the company's main production centre. In 2023, the factory delivered 947,ooo cars

Many Western people think the number 13 is unlucky, and this belief is so common in the West that it has even
influenced the way they design and number their buildings. In some places, you might find that there is no 13th
floor. Instead, the floors are numbered 12 and then 14, or the 13th floor might be used for things like the building's
equipment (设备), not for people.
Houses that have the number 13 are often less expensive. In the past, some places chose not to use the numbe
because they thought people did not want to live in a house with that number. There are many stories about why the
number 13 is believed to bring bad luck.
八年级英语(上册)期中 第4页(共8页)
But why do Western people today still believe in this? Interestingly, this idea is not very old and does not have
a long history. It is a media (媒体) creation which became popular around the 19oOs. And what they see and hear
on TV and in the news helps keep this belief alive.
If you search for old stories about the number 13 being unlucky, you won't find many from 1oo years ago. Yet
people often remember stories that support this idea and focus on the most famous examples. This interesting part
of culture shows how traditions and beliefs can affect daily life, even today
In short, the way the number 13 is treated in some places shows how deeply cultural habits and stories can
influence building design and decision-making. It's a good example of how certain ideas can become part of daily
life. even if they don't seem to make sense

D. There aren't any houses with number 13
) 23. According to the passage, what does the way the number 13 is treated in some places show?

People can listen to them while doing other things. For this reason, more and more people
are listening to books.
"I'm always busy with work and family," said Wang Chun, an IT worker in Suzhou. "It's not easy to find the
time and place to read. 27:
It helps me relax and learn more."
Over the years, text-to-speech AI technology has been widely used in the production of audiobooks
28.
Lu Heng is head of its AI voice lab. According to him, AI has sped up the production process of
audiobooks by more than 5o times. It has also greatly reduced costs
29.
For example, Douyin's novel reading platform has more than 40 styles of AI voices. They
can meet the needs of all age groups. These AI voices can even carry deep emotions (情感)
Some audiobook platforms buy the rights (版权) to the voices of famous people and language artists. They

AI in our life
Dear teachers and fellow students,
With the development of science and technology, AI is becoming more and more popular in our life. AI
tools like smartphones and cleaning robots help us by making things easier and more efficient. These
improvements help our society grow.
However, using AI everywhere also brings problems. Many people lose their jobs because machines
replace them, and some students become too dependent on AI, forgetting how to do things by themselves.
These issues can affect our lives and studies in bad ways.
Everything has good and bad sides. While AI can create problems, it can also improve our lives. If we
use AI smartly, we can enjoy its benefits and avoid most of its bad effects.
That’s all. Thank you!

AI in our life
Dear teachers and fellow students,
With the development of science and technology, AI is becoming more and more popular in our life. AI
helps us learn and live better. For example, AI can understand our speech and teach us difficult lessons in
school.
But AI also brings challenges. Some people might lose their jobs because of AI. Also, it might make it
easier for others to get our private information.
I think AI is good if we use it the right way and make sure it doesn’t hurt anyone. We should use AI to
help everyone and make life better for all.
That’s all. Thank you!
