Michael Vargas Arango, diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder (分裂情感性障碍), wanted the world to know that it’s not something to be afraid of. Through his podcast (播客), The Monsters We Create, Vargas boldly declares, “I’m not dangerous. I’m not crazy. I’m just one more guy, with a mental health condition.” His openness and emotions struck the judges of NPR’s College Podcast Challenge, earning him a $5,000 scholarship.
The idea for his podcast stemmed from a conversation with his girlfriend, Elizabeth Pella. “Of course I had to tell her what is happening to me,” says the 22-year-old international student. It was a big deal for him to tell her. He was living far from his family back in Colombia, speaking his second language, and Pella would be the first person outside of his family he’d told.
The conversation went well, and Pella was understanding, curious, and loving. But she had one request: Don’t tell my friends. She was worried that they would judge him and even judge her. “I was scared.” she says, “and I wanted to protect him, too.”
Pella’s request didn’t sit well with Vargas. He didn’t just want to tell his girlfriend and her friends. Instead, he thought he should show everyone what it was like living in his head. In The Monsters We Create, Vargas provides a raw glimpse into his daily battles, conversing with the voices in his head. Through creative sound effects and metaphors, he breaks down stereotypes concerning mental illness.
After winning the NPR contest, he called his parents to tell them. Through tears, his mom, Olga Arango, told him in Spanish that she’s crying for joy, for happiness. “I know that we’re blessed with a really beautiful person, and every day I tell him not to change,” says his mom to NPR.
Not changing, Vargas says, is the biggest lesson he learned in telling his story. He says he’s no longer scared to tell people who he really is.
24. What message does Vargas convey through his podcast?
A. Schizoaffective disorder is a serious disease.
B. Living with mental illness makes him suffer a lot.
C. Most people are enthusiastic about creating monsters.
D. Those with mental health conditions are just like anyone else.
25. What stimulated Vargas to start his podcast?
A. A request from his girlfriend.
B. A conversation with his parents.
C. Winning a scholarship from NPR.
D. Treating his mental health conditions.
26. How did Vargas’s mom react when she heard about his winning the NPR contest?
A. She showed curiosity about the contest.
B. She expressed joy and pride in her son.
C. She doubted the authority of the contest.
D. She was disappointed at his secret actions.
27. What does Vargas’s story teach us to do?
A. Protect our true selves from others.
B. Accept ourselves for who we are.
C. Try our best to improve ourselves.
D. Pay attention to our mental health.
C
“C’mon. Everyone’s doing it.” So why shouldn’t you?
It’s almost expected that you will experience peer pressure frequently throughout your teen years. Say you’re invited to a party where you know there will be alcohol. A friend decides to cut class. Or someone offers you a cigarette. How do you respond?
At some point, everyone has the desire to fit into a group. If you’re interested in sports, you might hang out with the jocks. If you’re interested in music, you spend time with others who enjoy music. You belong to that group and feel secure when you are part of it. The group identifies who you are and what you’re about. But what if people in your group start doing things that are wrong, hurtful, or even illegal? And what if these same people are your friends?
This is what we refer to as peer pressure — the pressure to conform to the behaviors, attitudes, and personal habits of the group. In many cases, there are serious risks involved. Unfortunately, most teenagers feel invulnerable, like “nothing bad can ever happen to me”. But you need to assess the risks well in advance.
On the other hand, you can use peer pressure to your advantage. Think of it as competitive peer pressure. For example, if you’re active in sports, your teammates probably pressure you to be the best you can be. If you’re on the track team, you pace yourself with the fastest runner, because you know it will make you better. If you’re striving for good grades, you compare your scores to those at the top of the list. If you’re in the band, and there are musicians better than you, you are pressured into striving to be the best musician you can be.
Now is your chance to believe in yourself and to stand alone at times, if you need to. When faced with group demands, assess the risks ahead of time, then make your own choice.
28. How does the author characterize peer pressure?
A. As a harmless aspect of socialization.
B. As an occasional experience in teen years.
C. As a phenomenon teens encounter frequently.
D. As a rare occurrence certain individuals come across.
29. What does the underlined phrase “conform to” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Affect. B. Follow. C. Explain. D. Understand.
30. How can one use peer pressure to their advantage according to the author?
A. By making friends in peer groups.
B. By agreeing with the majority’s opinions.
C. By adapting to others’ behaviors to fit in.
D. By competing with peers to improve oneself.
31. Which word can best describe the author’s attitude toward peer pressure?
A. Objective. B. Tolerant. C. Favorable. D. Conservative.

A new analysis of years of vocalizations by sperm whales in the eastern Caribbean has found that their system of communication is more sophisticated than previously known, exhibiting a complex internal structure with a “phonetic alphabet”. Sperm whales, the largest of the toothed whales, communicate using bursts of clicking noises — called codas — sounding a bit like Morse code. The researchers identified similarities to aspects of other animal communication systems — and even human language.
The researchers are part of the Project CETI Machine Learning Team. Using traditional statistical analysis and artificial intelligence, they examined calls made by about 60 whales recorded by the Dominica Sperm Whale Project, a research program that has collected large amounts of data on the species.
“Why are they exchanging these codas? What information might they be sharing?” asked study co-author Shane Gero, Project CETI’s lead biologist and Dominica Sperm Whale Project founder, affiliated with Carleton University in Canada. “I think it’s likely that they use codas to coordinate (协调) as a family, organize babysitting, hunting and defense,” Gero explained.
Variations in the number rhythm and tempo of the clicks produced different types of codas, the researchers found. The whales, among other things, altered the duration of the codas and sometimes added an extra click at the end, like a suffix in human language.
People combine sounds — often corresponding to letters of the alphabet — to produce words that carry meaning, and then produce sequences of (连串的) words to create sentences to convey more complex meanings. For people, there are two levels of combination. The lower level is sounds to words. The higher level is words to sentences. Sperm whales also use a two-level combination of features — first form codas, and then codas are sequenced together as the whales communicate.
“Human language is unique in many ways,” Gero said. “But I suspect we will find many patterns, structures and aspects thought to be unique to humans in other species, including whales, as science e progresses — and perhaps also 1teatures and aspects 5of animal communications which humans do not possess.”
32. What did the researchers find about the communication system of sperm whales?
A. It lacks any form of structure.
B. It sounds like a telegraph code.
C. It is simple and straightforward.
D. It mainly consists of whistling sounds.
33. What could be the purpose of sperm whales’ codas according to Gero?
A. To entertain.
B. To mark territory.
C. To establish social status.
D. To coordinate family activities.
34. What do human language and sperm whale communication have in common?
A. Both communicate by gesture.
B. Both mostly rely on visual cues.
C. Both use a two-level combination.
D. Both have more than one alphabet.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. A new understanding of communication
B. The evolution of sperm whale communication
C. Unlock the secrets of sperm whale communication
D. Compare human and sperm whale communication systems

Secrets to keeping flowers fresh
Take your time choosing.
All cut flowers are different, so it’s important to take your time looking around and choosing the right one. When people are buying flowers, they often go for the fully closed ones because they’re under the impression that the flowers will live longer once they’re brought back home. ____36____ It’s best to choose the ones where the buds are slightly opened because the tightly shut ones have a higher chance of never opening.
Ask for flower food.
Typically, flowers will come with a small powder packet known as flower food. ____37____ If you don’t see the packet included in your bouquet (花束) at a flower shop, don’t be afraid to ask for one. However, if you usually buy your flowers from a grocery store, buying some to keep on standby is also a great idea.
____38____
Arranging your flowers can seem like a hard task initially, but you should follow your nose. There are no rules when it comes to arranging, so have fun with it. Play with what works and what doesn’t, and the arrangement you end up with will be the best reflection of who you are because you created it.
Refresh your water and stems.
Dedicating a few minutes every day to refreshing your flower’s water will go a long way, especially if you take the time to cut the bottom of each stem. Whether it be scissors or a knife, cut the stems at a diagonal angle, so more water can reach the actual flower. ____39____
Don’t be so hard on yourself.
The moment you buy flowers, you need to know the fact that they’re living creatures and have a limited life span. You can use every single tip to take care of your flowers well and they may still die early and that’s okay! They’ve served their purpose to brighten up your days regardless of how long they lasted, so say “thank you” and don’t be so hard on yourself. ____40____
A You have done your best.
B. This isn’t always the case.
C. Personalize your arrangement.
D. Arrange for a professional gardener.
E. Change the water routinely every two or three days.
F. This supplement helps your flowers stay fresh longer.
G. How much care you put into it will determine how long it’ll live.

In the town of Eastview, the local community center had recently launched a “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” program aimed at building closer community ties and providing support to those in need. The program included a range of services such as meal deliveries, tutoring for students, and assistance with minor home repairs. Volunteers from the community were encouraged to sign up and contribute their skills and time to help improve the lives of their neighbors.
Julia, a recent college graduate who had moved back to Eastview, decided to volunteer for the program. She saw it as a perfect opportunity to give back to the community that had supported her upbringing. Julia chose to focus on tutoring, as she had always excelled in math and science. She hoped to help students who were struggling in these subjects, providing them not just with academic support, but also with confidence in their abilities.
On her first day as a tutor, Julia met with three students at the community center. She quickly established close ties with them, making the sessions interactive and fun. The Students, who had initially been apprehensive about the subject matter, began to show great interest.
“Math can actually be fun when you understand it!” one of the students exclaimed, a smile spreading across his face as he solved a problem correctly.
Julia’s success with the tutoring sessions spread through the community, and soon more students began to sign up. Seeing the positive impact she was making, Julia felt motivated to do more. Adopt a Slow Loris
Habitat: Forests
Diet: Fruits, insects and other small prey
Threats: Habitat loss, poaching for the illegal pet trade, and traditional remedies (疗法)
Interesting facts: Pygmy slow lorises go into a short hibernation during cool months to save energy and lower their body temperature so they are less detectable to predators such as heat-seeking snakes. They often hang upside-down by their feet to free up both hands for eating.

24 What message does Vargas convey through his podcast?

【答案】28. C 29. B 30. D 31. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了青少年的同龄人压力,强调了评估和处理其负面影响的必要性。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段第一句“It’s almost expected that you will experience peer pressure frequently throughout your teen years. (几乎可以预料到,在青少年时期,你会经常感受到同伴的压力)”可知,作者认为同龄人压力是青少年经常经历的。故选C项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据上文“At some point, everyone has the desire to fit into a group.(在某种程度上,每个人都渴望融入一个群体)”可知,每个人都想融入群体,即“随大流”,结合划线词句所在句子“This is what we refer to as peer pressure — the pressure to conform to the behaviors, attitudes, and personal habits of the group. (这就是所谓的同辈压力——与群体的行为、态度和个人习惯conform to的压力)”可知,划线词组所在句子是在解释同龄人压力这一概念,即与群体保持一致(融入群体,随大流)带来的压力。由此推知,划线部分意思是“随大流”。故选B项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“For example, if you’re active in sports, your teammates probably pressure you to be the best you can be. If you’re on the track team, you pace yourself with the fastest runner, because you know it will make you better. If you’re striving for good grades, you compare your scores to those at the top of the list. If you’re in the band, and there are musicians better than you, you are pressured into striving to be the best musician you can be.(例如,如果你积极参加体育运动,你的队友可能会给你压力,让你做到最好。如果你是田径队的一员,你会和跑得最快的人步调一致,因为你知道这样会让你变得更好。如果你在努力取得好成绩,你会将自己的分数与排名靠前的学生进行比较。如果你在乐队里,有比你更好的音乐家,你就会受到压力,努力成为最好的音乐家)”可推知,作者建议青少年利用同龄人压力,通过与同龄人竞争来提升自我。故选D项。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,并根据最后一段中“When faced with group demands, assess the risks ahead of time, then make your own choice. (面对群体需求时,提前评估风险,然后做出自己的选择)”可知,在本文中,作者讨论了同龄人压力对青少年的积极和消极影响,作者鼓励青少年在独立思考、权衡利弊之后做出自己的选择。由此推知,作者对同龄人压力的态度是客观的。故选A项。

Variations in the number, rhythm and tempo of the clicks produced different types of codas, the researchers found.

【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文,一项新的研究发现,抹香鲸的交流系统比此前已知的更复杂。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“Sperm whales, the largest of the toothed whales, communicate using bursts of clicking noises — called codas — sounding a bit like Morse code.(抹香鲸是齿鲸中最大的一种,它们通过咔嗒咔嗒的声音进行交流,这种声音被称为尾声,听起来有点像莫尔斯电码)”可知,研究人员发现,抹香鲸交流时的声音类似莫尔斯电码,故选B。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“‘I think it’s likely that they use codas to coordinate (协调) as a family, organize babysitting, hunting and defense,’ Gero explained.(Gero解释说:‘我认为它们很可能使用codas来协调作为一个家庭,组织照看孩子、狩猎和防御。’)”可知,Gero认为,抹香鲸的交流方式“codas”可能是用来协调家族成员的各种活动,故选D。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“For people, there are two levels of combination. The lower level is sounds to words. The higher level is words to sentences. Sperm whales also use a two-level combination of features — first form codas, and then codas are sequenced together as the whales communicate.(对人来说,有两个层次的结合。较低的层次是声音到文字的转换。更高的层次是从单词到句子。抹香鲸也使用两个层次的特征组合——首先形成尾语,然后在鲸鱼交流时将尾语排列在一起)”可知,人类语言包含两个层级——从字母到单词和从单词到句子,抹香鲸的交流方式和人类语言一样,也包含类似的两个层级,故选C。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合第一段中“A new analysis of years of vocalizations by sperm whales in the eastern Caribbean has found that their system of communication is more sophisticated than previously known, exhibiting a complex internal structure with a “phonetic alphabet”.(一项对东加勒比海抹香鲸多年来发声的新分析发现,它们的交流系统比以前所知的要复杂得多,显示出一种带有“音标”的复杂内部结构)”可知,一项新的研究发现,抹香鲸的交流系统比此前已知的更复杂。C项“揭秘抹香鲸的交流系统”为最佳标题,故选C。

A. You have done your best.
B. This isn’t always the case.
C. Personalize your arrangement.
