Dogs and cats are different in many ways. So sometimes it is difficult for them to get along. However, with patience and the right circumstances, cats and dogs can be best friends.
For example, dogs tend to be social animals and they are naturally playful. Cats, on the other hand, tend to be more independent. A dog that wants to play might seem aggressive and frightening to a cat. This may lead the cat to defend itself against an attack although that’s really just a desire to play. Similarly, dogs like to chase each other. It’s a fun game. Chasing cats can be just as fun as chasing other dogs. Again, cats may interpret such playful behavior as a threat.
Dogs and cats all have tails, but tails can make things confusing. When a dog waves its tail, it’s sending a friendly message: “I’m happy. Let’s play.” Cats, however, wave their tails when they are angry. You can see how this might lead cats and dogs to become confused if they’re facing each other with waving tails!
Although dogs and cats aren’t really enemies, dogs are hunters by nature. This natural behavior could cause problems between dogs and cats. But it can be controlled by special training called socialization when the animals meet for the first time.
(Listen again, please.)

11. What may happen when dogs are chasing cats?
12. Which of the following may be one of the reasons that dogs and cats fight often?
13. What can be inferred from the passage?

Social media has changed how people become popular. Before, people would record their music and send them to recording studios. They would play in live concerts and hope to be discovered by a famous recording studio. Now, people post videos online and then try to gain a following. This makes it easier than it was before for a regular person to find success. Now, it is not in the hands of the recording studios, but rather the regular person.
If you want to launch a successful music career, it makes sense to use the power of technology to do so. You should create a self-image on a social media site, Youtube or Instagram, and post videos of yourself doing what you love.
You can learn a lot from the talented musicians who made it big through the click of a button. That is, you should make full use of your resources. With so many amazingly talented musicians begging for the spotlight, it can be hard to break away from the crowd. The best way to stand out and get your face noticed is by showing your face on as many online platforms as possible.
(Listen again, please.)

14. What did young musician mainly rely on to gain fame in the past?
15. What is strongly suggested to those who want to become music stars?
16. What is the passage mainly about?

W: Have you decided on the apartment we want to rent after the checking out, dear?
M: Well, I seem to be filled with too much information about those apartments. I would say the Ritter Park apartment is what we really need. It’s spacious for my family. The garden is a bit small, though. It’s not a real problem. The real problem is that it’s far beyond our price range.
W: What a pity! What about the others? You mentioned you checked out the Rainbow Apartment and Parson Apartment.
M: Yes. The Rainbow Apartment has a great view over the downtown area. Only one block away from the shopping center and the metro. It gets everything—washing machine, dishwasher…you name it. The price is just a little over our budget, but it is good price considering its place. Unfortunately, there are only two bedrooms. I don’t think Jack and Tommy would like to share a room.
W: No, they don’t want to be interrupted with each other.
M: That’s why I gave it up and visited the Parson Apartment. The price is quite OK, and there are enough rooms for the four of us.
W: Sounds good.
M: The apartment itself is very good, if it wasn’t too close to the bars and a Karaoke room.
W: Did you check out the basement suite? I don’t like the idea of living underground
M: Neither do I. Just for your curiosity, I would say there is a big kitchen, three bedrooms, and even a fitting room. They offered an unbelievably low price. Water, electricity, cable TV, and Internet access are all included in the rent.
(Listen again, please.)
Questions:
17. Why did the man give up the Ritter Park apartment?
18. What did the man say about the Rainbow Apartment?
19. What is the disadvantage of the Parson Apartment?
20. What will the speakers most probably do next?

Travels without internet
It may sound hard to believe in this digital age but Yang Hao, a 32-year-old doctoral student studying in the United Kingdom, started on a solo trip the old-fashioned way last year, using a printed map, paying for everything using cash or a bank card, reading train times, and talking to strangers.
Over the course of 134 days, he visited 68 counties and cities in 24 provinces and regions 1 China, read 40 books, documented his experiences, and used two cameras to record 2 he saw.
Since his story was posted online, it 3 (go) viral, triggering widespread discussion and reflection on the modern dependence on technology. 4 he foresaw that it would trigger some discussion, the public attention his journey has drawn has exceeded his imagination.
Last Nov 27, he set off from Taiyuan with a 40-liter backpack, 5 contained clothing, two cameras, maps, his identification card, bank cards, cash, two writing brushes, a bottle of calligraphy ink, a pen, a notebook, and three books.
Standing at the Taiyuan Railway Station as his parents saw him off. “It was the first time in my life that both my parents saw me off together. They felt more distant from me without the internet,” Yang says, adding that his parents were likely 6 (worry) more about him as they couldn’t contact him by phone.
Arriving at Linfen, he encountered the first challenge, as without a phone, he couldn’t book a hotel online. Although he showed his ID card and offered to pay cash at the hotel reception, it seemed that without a phone, he could not reserve a room. During the trip, Yang experienced lots of situations like this. At the entrance to the Hubei Provincial Museum in Wuhan, he 7 (not allow) in because the museum required reservation in advance and he couldn’t reserve a ticket online.
Yang wrote his first letter to his parents on the third day. Holding the brush, he struggled to find the right words to start. “Through the traditional way of writing letters to convey my feelings and longing for my family, the distance and the waiting helped me reflect on my relationship with the world,” Yang says. He mailed 40 letters during his trip, and received five replies, which have become treasured memories.
Yang returned to Taiyuan on April 9. His mother welcomed him with a bowl of noodles in accordance with the Chinese saying “Dumplings for departure, and noodles for return”. With the noodles 8 (warm) his belly, Yang felt that his journey had come to an end.
9 he first saw his phone and computer, which had been lying unused for more than four months, he didn’t want to turn them on, 10 he had become used to a quiet, peaceful life without the internet.

Machine learning pioneers win Nobel prize in physics
Two pioneers in the field of artificial intelligence, John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton, have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2024. Their 11 work on artificial neural networks, inspired by the human brain, has revolutionized the way we think about machines and their ability to learn from data.
John Hopfield, an emeritus(荣誉退休的)professor at Princeton University in the US, 12 an associative memory system capable of storing and retrieving(检索)complex patterns, much like the human brain does with memories. Geoffrey Hinton, a British-Canadian professor at the University of Toronto, known as the “godfather of AI, ” 13 to a method that allows neural networks to independently uncover features within data, a cornerstone of today’s large-scale artificial neural networks.
Their research, which began in the 1980s, has enabled machine learning through the use of artificial neural networks, leading to 14 in language translation and generative AI, like ChatGPT. The Nobel Committee for Physics noted that these networks have not only advanced various physics fields but have also become 15 into everyday technologies, significantly impacting society.
Hinton, 76, gained attention last year when he left Google to voice 16 about the potential dangers of AI. He warned about the risks of machines surpassing human intelligence and the ensuing implications for misinformation, job markets, and human existence. Despite the concerns, he also 17 the potential benefits, such as improvements in healthcare and productivity.
Prof. Michael Wooldridge, a computer scientist at the University of Oxford, praised the award as a proof of the profound impact of AI on science, noting that the success of neural networks has unlocked new 18 for data analysis. Prof. Dame Wendy Hall, a computer scientist at the University of Southampton, expressed surprise at the choice of awarding the prize in physics, given that there is no Nobel Prize for computer science, but acknowledged the 19 influence of artificial neural networks on physics research.
In summary, the Nobel Prize in Physics 2024 celebrates the transformative impact of AI research on science and society, 20 the contributions of Hopfield and Hinton in shaping the future of intelligent machines.

How Do You Know You’re Not in the Matrix?
At the heart of the philosophy of Aristotle and St Thomas Aquinas is the idea that we come into contact with reality through the senses. But what if our senses are not a(n) 21 source? Perhaps our senses are deceiving us, and everything we perceive isn’t real but is an illusion like in the movie The Matrix.
This 22 of sense knowledge was part of Rene Descartes’s methodic doubt, which many radical (激进的) skeptics have adopted. Descartes argued: whatever I have up till now accepted as most true I have acquired either from the senses or through the senses. But I have found that the senses may deceive me 23 , and it is sensible never to trust completely those who have deceived us even once. And one example Descartes gives as evidence is the fact that objects at a distance look smaller than what they are.
But this is not deception. The sense of sight is reporting 24 what it perceives. As D.Q. McInerny says, “This is the sense of sight functioning just as it should, in order to give me a proper knowledge of 25 ”. Only when one made the judgement that “the man is small and then becomes big” would 26 come in. Truth and falsity do not 27 sensory perception but the fact of judging that perception.
Another 28 with Descartes’s reason for doubting sensory perception is that he relies on only one sensory power. It’s often the case that in order to test whether one sense is deceiving us, we must 29 another sense.
To use an example that many radical skeptics do to justify their doubt of sense knowledge. I may perceive the stick 30 immersed in water as crooked (弯曲). How do I determine whether what I perceive is actually the case? I pick up the stick. When I do so, I judge the stick is actually 31 . But in order to make a correct judgment about the stick, I use another sensory power—namely, 32 —that I must trust in order to make the proper judgment.
With regard to Descartes’s example, in order to make a sound judgment about the 33 of the man walking up the street, Descartes would have to make contact with him through the sense of touch and measure him, which requires trust in sense knowledge.
Furthermore, Descartes’s recognition of the man’s small stature (身高) as 34 presupposes his trust in his previous sensory experience of the man’s tall stature. As Ralph McInerny notes, “Descartes must trust his senses in order to challenge them.”
So, if it’s reasonable to trust sense knowledge, and the senses put us into contact with the 35 world, then we can have greater certainty that what we perceive is objectively real.

(A)
I heard some good news recently. My grandfather called me to test his new hearing aid. For the first time, he could hear my voice, which thrilled us.
I soon found out there was another reason my grandparents were so happy — their new audiologist (听觉病矫治专家), Anna. Unlike the previous providers they’d been dealing with, Anna gave time and attention. Anna not only ensured the new hearing aid worked as it should, but also offered to go to my grandparents’ apartment to show them how to use it.
Such kindness might sound rare, but I’ve since started wondering: what if it’s more common than we think?
It started with some research that showed people often underestimate the willingness of strangers to engage with, or even befriend them. Then I came across a study that suggested news coverage of current affairs tends to be more negative than positive because humans tend to give negative events more attention.
Negative stories can attract our attention and prepare us for disappointment. But if we don’t engage with positive ones, they might lead us to be more critical of the world, more defensive and less hopeful.
So I think sometimes what we hear, see, or even know might not be the whole picture. The truth might be hidden from us, requiring us to notice and discover it. We could start by asking ourselves whether we are focusing more on negative or positive stories and whether we are letting negative news surround us. Maybe even paying more attention to good news or making a point of sharing good news will help.
Anna’s attitude was remarkable. She went beyond the call of duty and, upon leaving, refused to accept anything but words as thanks.
Why not remind ourselves that, for all of the bad that’s in the world and in the news, behind the scenes, in people’s ordinary lives, still lie untold stories of extraordinary good.
36.How was Anna different from previous audiologists?
A.She offered her patients personal assistance.
B.She displayed more ambition and professionalism.
C.She refused to accept payment for the hearing aid.
D.She paid little attention to her patients’ needs.
37.Why are news reports on current events usually more negative than positive?
A.To warn people of potential risks. B.To attract audiences more effectively.
C.To encourage people to seek out the truth. D.To reveal the harshness of reality.
38.What is a potential consequence of focusing only on negative stories?
A.Improved ability to cope with stress. B.Increased optimism and hope.
C.A reduced sense of security. D.A more objective view of the world.
39.What does the author suggest people do?
A.Take advantage of others’ kindness. B.Share only positive news stories.
C.Engage more with strangers. D.Maintain a positive outlook on the world.

You see a fantastic offer, like a hotel room. You decide to book. Then it turns out there is a service fee. Then a cleaning fee. Then a few other extra costs. By the time you pay the final price, it is no longer the fantastic offer you thought.
Welcome to the world of drip pricing — the practice of promoting something at an attractive headline price and then, once you’ve committed to the purchase process, hitting you with unavoidable add-ons that are “dripped”.
In most cases, you see through all additionally added mandatory fees, and even though you could relinquish the deal, you choose to bite the bullet and complete the deal. Resistance to the idea of starting the search all over again is not simply a matter of laziness or indecision. There’s a profound psychological mechanism at play here, called the present bias.
In the paper, Doing It Now or Later, economist Matthew Rabin defines people’s present-biased preference via an example of choosing between doing seven hours of unpleasant activity on April 1 or eight hours two weeks later: If asked on February 1, most people will choose the earlier option. But come April 1, given the same choice, most of us tend to put off work till April 15. In simple terms, the inconvenience of doing something “right now” often feels disproportionately large. Beyond the challenge of starting over, there’s another psychological phenomenon that drip pricing uses - loss aversion. Imagine you’re booking tickets for a show. Initially attracted by the headline price, you’re now presented with different seating categories. Seeing a VIP ticket is within your budget, you decide to fork out. But then, during the checkout process, the drip begins. You realize you could have chosen lower-category seats, but by this stage, you’ve already imagined yourself enjoying the show from those nice seats. Going back to a cheaper seat will feel like a loss.
Buyers would benefit from a ban on drip pricing. Many countries are taking steps to protect consumers from drip pricing. The effectiveness of such measures, however, is uncertain. Nonetheless, you can hopefully make a more informed decision by understanding why the strategy works.
43.Which of the following is an example of drip pricing?
A.FlightHub introduces a bonus after you choose their flight.
B.Airbnb offers you a membership account when you book a trip.
C.Rent-A-Car charges wear and tear fees beyond the advertised price.
D.Ticketmaster provides optional items at later stages of your purchase.
44.What does the underlined word “relinquish” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Reach. B.Abandon. C.Sign. D.Expand.
45.How will Rabin explain people’s refusal to cancel an order and remake one?
A.People are likely to blindly stick to their initial intentions.
B.People like to grab earlier rewards and delay immediate costs.
C.People struggle to make a decision among multiple choices.
D.People tend to tolerate additional costs within their budget.
46.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A.To explain why people fall into the drip pricing trick.
B.To educate customers on how to deal with drip pricing.
C.To call on governments to protect consumers’ interests.
D.To introduce two psychological phenomena about spending.
Section C

A.It is flexible enough to turn down into a grimace (鬼脸) or up into a smile.
B.This is “an exciting area of development,” but market adoption would be complex.
C.It could bend like a human finger, making it capable of performing more precise tasks.
D.While protecting a robot’s complex machinery, it is soft and light enough for a wide range of uses.
E.This capacity is a “critical feature” for humanoid robots as even small scratches could lead to breakdowns.
F.The skin attachment also gives humanoid robots the potential for sensation, taking science one step closer to sci-fi fantasy.
Giving Robots a Fleshy Face and a Smile
If humanoid robots look a bit cold-would it help if they had fleshy faces that can smile at you?
A research team in Japan has created a face mask from human skin cells and attached it to robots with a novel technique. 47 . This outward layer, the researchers say, is both elastic and durable enough to protect robots while making them appear more human.
“Human-like faces and expressions improve communication and empathy in human-robot interactions,” said Shoji Takeuchi, the study’s lead researcher. “This further makes robots more effective in health care, service and companionship roles.”
Beyond expressiveness, the “skin” can self-repair and heal. 48 .
The novel skin attachment method advances the newborn “biohybrid” robotics field, said Kevin Lynch, an expert on robotics and biosystems. This field integrates mechanical engineering with genetic and tissue engineering. “This study is an innovative contribution to the problem of anchoring artificial skin to the underlying material,” said Lynch. Takeuchi’s team has been working with labmade human skin for years. In 2022, they developed a robotic finger covered in living skin. 49 .
The team had tried anchoring the skin with mini-hooks, but those caused tears as the robot moved. The researchers then decided to mimic ligaments (韧带), the tiny ropes of loose tissue that connect bones. They drilled small, V-shaped holes into the robot and applied a gel, which plugged the holes and made the artificial skin attach to the robot. “This approach integrates traditional rigid robots with soft, biological skins, making them more ‘human-like,’” said Yifan Wang, a mechanical engineer.
50 . “This could create opportunities for the robots to sense and safely interact with humans,” Wang said.
The faces of the robots with artificial skin in Takeuchi’s lab are unable to sense touch or temperature change. Takeuchi said that is his next research target.
“We aim to create skin that closely resembles real skin by gradually constructing essential components such as blood vessels, nerves and sweat glands,” he said.
In place of the neural systems that convey sensation in a human body, a robot’s electronics would need to power a sensor signal. This development, Wang said, would require much more time and research.
III.Summary Writing
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point( s)of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
Light the Cities of the Future
The previously unlit cycle path in the Netherlands has recently drawn our attention. It has been resurfaced with a material that consists of shining stones in order to create a well-lit route. The Van Gogh path, so called after the artist who lived in the town of Nuenen in 1883, combines the traditional with the contemporary in a gesture that acknowledge Van Gogh’s masterpiece. The Starry Night, but also shows the way ahead for city lighting. The Van Gogh path is not a single case: it’s not difficult to foresee a time when natural materials could help light the cities of the future.
Why should we care about city lighting? What’s wrong with current electrical lighting anyway? Well, the problem that it causes is two-fold. First, of course, electricity in most cities come from non-renewable resources. According to the International Energy Agency, almost 20% of global electricity is consumed for lighting, which is responsible for high levels of car emissions. But there’s also the belief that electric light itself is a form of pollution by destroying our view of night sky.
For the above reasons, then, it seems wise to investigate other approaches. The city of Glasgow, is attempting to use intellect street lighting, to monitor how citizen interact with the urban landscape and minimize electricity consumption and thus emissions. This “Smart City” approach is seen by many as the way of the future, but some designers are not convinced.
They’re pioneering the altogether more original approach of using materials from the natural world in order to replace electric light entirely. They believe that this new “technology” can one day completely replace microchips and digital systems as we find better ways of making use of the light-producing machines that already exist in the natural world.

Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
I heard some good news recently.

(C)

【答案】Dear Principal,
I am Wang Zi, a senior student at our school. As part of the “Beautiful Campus Project,” I would like to propose a creative and practical plan to optimize our school’s garden area.
I suggest transforming it into a “Reading Garden.” This space could include comfortable seating, shade-giving plants, and small water features to create a serene environment for students to read and relax. The reason for this recommendation is that a tranquil outdoor reading space can promote mental well-being, encourage more reading habits, and offer a peaceful retreat from the busy school life. This idea, which won’t require extensive resources, can be implemented and will serve as an excellent addition to our educational environment.
I hope you consider this suggestion.
Sincerely,
Wang Zi
