Of all the creatures on the planet, the narwhal is one of the strangest looking, It'sa
whale which has a large protruding tusk coming out of its head; that's how it got its nick
name, the unicorn of the sea. They live in the Arctic Ocean off the coast of Canada,Russia
and East Greenland. However, experts say some populations of narwhal could be extinct by
2025,and it's all because of noise pollution.
Narwhals rely on echolocation, which they use to find food and navigate their sur-
roundings. The animal produces a sound wave which bounces off an object. They pick this
reflected sound up through their lower jaw,and information on features like size and speed
passes to their ears. However, increase in human marine activity,as well as climate change
has resulted in the Arctic Ocean becoming noisier, which means it's more difficult for nar
whals to rely on sound. Susanna Blackwell, who studies the effects of underwater noise on
marine animals, told the BBC that there is noisier activity in the Arctic Ocean than ever be
cause,as sea ice melts, new navigation routes are opening. And while icebergs breaking and
creaking have been part of the ocean soundscape for hundreds of years,man-made noise is
much harder for animals to adapt to, particularly as these changes are so sudden.
英语试题(五)第3页(共8页)
Research published in Science Aduances in 2o23 recorded the reactions of narwhals to
the simulated(模拟的) noises of oil expeditions made by a patrol vessel(巡逻船). The
scientists tagged and tracked the creatures and found that,on hearing these sounds, they
ended deep dives and stopped clicking, the echolocation signal they use for finding food un-
derwater. This is the same reaction narwhals have to orcas, who hunt them, meaning hu-
man-made noise could trigger the creature's"threat button"
So, what can we do? Charlotte Findlay, a postdoctoral fellow at Aarhus University.
says"noise is actually quite easy to solve. We need to either turn it off or turn it down."
24. What can we learn about the narwhal from the first Paragraph?
A. It has a large tusk from its jaw.
B. It currently faces the risk of dying out.
C. It lives in the southern hemisphere.
D. It sounds different from other whales.
25. What does Susanna Blackwell's study show?
A. Narwhals navigate their surroundings by echolocation
B. Sea ice melting makes the ocean noisier than ever.
C. Man-made noise has a greater impact on marine animals.
D. Narwhals are not used to icebergs breaking and creaking.
26. What does the research mentioned in Paragraph 3 imply?
A. A patrol vessel was applied in the research.
B. Orcas are the natural enemy to narwhals.
C. Noises would change the echolocation signal.
D. Scientists tagged narwhals under the water.
27. What's the best title for the passage?
A. Survival of Narwhal threatened by man-made noise
B. Experts predicting the extinction of the narwhal
C. New research set to solve underwater noise pollutior
D. Narwhal population affected by underwater noise pollution

Could a new treatment developed by the US company Lilly mean"the beginning of the
end" of Alzheimer's? Could we even cure it some day? These are headlines and questions
swirling(流传) around after news of a new drug, called donanemab, showed promising re-
sults in phase-3 trials.
The brain science behind Alzheimer's is complex, but CT and MRJ scans suggest that
poisonous changes occur in the brain, including the abnormal build-up of proteins called am-
yloid plaques and tau tangles. The damage starts in the parts of the brain essential for
forming memories but then spreads throughout the organ, with brain tissue shrinking sig-
nificantly.
Developing treatments for Alzheimer's has been a challenge, with almost 20 years
passing with no new drugs. But in the last year, two new ones have emerged: donanemab
and lecanemab. Neither are cures or magic bullets for the disease, but they do address key
symptoms. They target the amyloid proteins that can accumulate in the brain and damage
neurons,slowing down its progression.
While this news is exciting, there are major caveats. One is whether it will ever be-
come available on the NHS. The cost is estimated to be about f 2o,ooo per person per year
of treatment.
Another is the serious side effects: in the study, brain swelling occurred in 24% of
participants and brain bleeding occurred in 31. 4% on the drug compared with 13. 6% in the
placebo(安慰剂)group. There were also three deaths during the trial.
英语试题(五)第4页(共8页)
Part of the problem for me,as an academic,in assessing the drug is that the full results
of the trial haven't yet been shared publicly or published in a peer-review journal. We can-
not access the full data or examine the trial yet,and there is always a motivation for private
companies to overstate the effectiveness of new drugs. Trial results need to be assessed by
an independent body of experts.
While it is unlikely to change clinical practice until at least 2o25,the news of donanem
ab is again an indication that science is continuing to make progress when it comes to trea-
ting the major causes of illness and death, even one related to the highly complex inner
workings of the brain. So, there are caveats and the need for caution, but these new drugs
are indeed the grounds for that rare thing these days: hope
28. What can we learn about Alzheimer's from the passage?
A. There exists a new drug to cure it completely.
B. Most people will develop Alzheimer's when they are old.
C. It is caused by the accumulation of some proteins in the brain.
D. It results from the loss of memories as people get older
29. What does the underlined word "caveats"mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Warnings.
B. Discussions.
C.Debates.
D. Weaknesses.
30. What is the problem of the new drug according to the author as an academic?
A. It has serious side effects such as brain bleeding and deaths.
B. The effectiveness may be blown up without fair assessment.
C. The cost of the new drug is out of reach for ordinary people.
D. There is no possibility for new drugs to be admitted into the NHS.
31. What is the author's attitude towards the new drug?
A.Approving.
B. Doubtful.
C.Unclear.
D. Indifferent.

Scientists say they have developed a system that uses machine learning to predict when
and where lightning will strike. Researchers report the system is able to predict lightning
strikes up to 30 minutes before they happen within a 3o-kilometer area.
Lightning is a strong burst of electricity in the atmosphere. Since it carries an extreme-
ly powerful electrical charge, it can be destructive and deadly. European researchers have
estimated that between 6,ooo and 24, ooo people are killed by lightning worldwide each
year. For this reason, climate scientists have long sought to develop methods to predict
lightning.
The system tested in the experiments uses a combination of data from weather stations
and machine learning methods. The researchers developed a prediction model that was
trained to recognize weather conditions that were likely to cause lightning.
The model was created with data collected over a 12-year period from 12 Swiss weath-
er stations in cities and mountain areas. The data was placed into a unique machine learning
algorithm(算法),which compared it to records of lightning strikes. Researchers say the al-
gorithm was then able to learn the conditions under which lightning happens.
The researchers test-ran the system several times. They found that the system made
predictions that proved correct almost 80 percent of the time. "It can now be used any-
where,”the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology said in a statement
The researchers plan to keep developing the technology with a European effort that
aims to create a lightning protection program. The effort is called the European Laser
Lightning Rod project. Scientists working on the project are experimenting with a laser
technology that could someday control lightning activity, transferring lightning charges
from clouds to the ground. They hope that such technology can one day be used as protec-
tion against lightning strikes.

The power of positive thinking
Is your glass of milk half-full or half-empty? 36 Do they focus on the positives (a
half-full glass) or the negatives(a half-empty one)? Thinking positively, with a belief that
most things will turn out well, is called optimism-and it's known to boost your well-be-
ing. The good news is that everybody can learn to think more positively.
37
Research shows that people who are optimistic and think positively tend to experience
less stress and cope well when faced with life's challenges. People who are more pessimis
tic (expect that the worst will happen) may find it hard to believe that these challenges will
pass.
Worrving is like a fire alarm.
Everybody can worry from time to time. Worrying can help to keep you safe-if you
were never worried and were overly positive about how things would turn out, you
wouldn't recognize risks. " 38 It's like a fire alarm," says child psychotherapist Rachel
Melville-Thomas. "The trouble is that sometimes it goes off when there isn't a huge danger
to face."When this happens, you can feel anxious and hopeless about what lies ahead.
Learn to think positively.
Optimism is shaped by your genes, which carry characteristics inherited from your par-
ents and by what happens to you. 39 Research has shown that it can help to draw or
write an outcome that's positive-for example, an image of you playing guitar, having pas
sed your next grade. 40
A. Your genes will in turn help obtain it.
B. This question makes you lost in thought.
C. Why is thinking positively good for you?
D. Imagining this can motivate you to work to achieve it.
E. Worrying is our brain warning us of something threatening.
F. However, whatever your starting point is, everyone can learn it.
G. This saying is often used to test people's outlook in a situation.

The Little Girl Who Dared To Wish
As Amy Hagadorn rounded the corner across the hall from her classroom, she
knocked into a tall boy from the fifth grade running in the opposite direction.
“Watch it, squirt(矮子).”The boy yelled as he passed by the little third-grader.
Then, with a bad smile on his face, the boy took hold of his right leg and copied the way
Amy limped(行)when she walked.
Amy closed her eyes. Ignore him, she told herself as she headed for her classroom.
But at the end of the day, Amy was still thinking about the tall boy's mean teasing. It
wasn't as if he were the only one. It seemed that ever since Amy started the third grade.
someone teased her every single day. Kids teased her about her speech or her limping. Amy
was tired of it.
Back home at the dinner table that evening, Amy was quiet. Her mother knew that
things were not going well at school. That's why Patti Hagadorn was happy to have some
exciting news to share with her daughter.
“There's a Christmas wish contest on the radio station,” Amy's mom announced.
“Write a letter to Santa, and you might win a prize."
Amy giggled. The contest sounded like fun. She started thinking about what she wan-
ted most for Christmas.
A smile took hold of Amy when the idea first came to her. Out came pencil and paper
and Amy went to work on her letter.
Dear Santa Claus.
My name is Amy. I am nine years old. I have a problem at school. Can you help me
Santa? Kids laugh at me because of the way I walk and run and talk. I have a serious dis
ease. I just want one day where no one laughs at me or makes fun of me. Love, Amy.
