LEGO Bricks out of Recycled Plastic
The LEGO Group is finally on its way to making its toy bricks with sustainable material. Not long ago, the company showed a model brick made of recycled plastic.
The new model, which uses PET plastic from waste bottles, is the first brick made of a recycled material to meet the company’s strict quality and safety requirements. According to the company, a one-liter PET plastic bottle provides enough raw material for ten 2×4 Lego bricks.
The model brick is the result of over three years of testing by scientists and engineers. “We are very excited about this important improvement,” said Tim Brooks, Vice President of Environmental Responsibility at the LEGO Group. “The biggest challenge on our sustainability journey is using new materials that are as strong and high-quality as the old ones. With this model, we’re able to show the progress we're making.”
But don’t rush to your nearest toy store just yet. The team plans to continue testing and developing the PET material, which is expected to take at least a year. Another thing the company is testing is how the material can be colored.
“We know kids care about the environment and want us to make our products more environment-friendly,” Brooks said. “Even though it will be a while before they will be able to play with bricks made of recycled plastic, we want kids to know we’re working on it and bringing them along on the journey with us. Trying and failing is an important part of learning and innovation. Just as kids build, unbuild and rebuild with LEGO bricks at home, we’re doing the same in our laboratory.”
“我们知道孩子们关心环境,并希望我们使我们的产品更加环保,”Brooks 说。“尽管他们还需要一段时间才能玩由回收塑料制成的积木,但我们希望孩子们知道我们正在努力,并带他们一起踏上旅程。尝试和失败是学习和创新的重要组成部分。就像孩子们在家里用乐高积木拼搭、拆解和重新拼搭一样,我们在实验室里也做同样的事情。

话题小故事2 ——拯救海洋
A special way to save the oceans
Covering about 70% of the earth’s surface, oceans are a beautiful part of the world. Many people like going to the seaside to enjoy the beautiful view (景色). 30-year-old American dancer and filmmaker Christine Ren is one of them. However, she not only likes oceans, but also cares about their future. In fact, recently she has created two films to get people’s attention to the protection of oceans.
The two films were both shot underwater. One film is about overfishing and called “Jellyfish Soup” and the other is about plastic pollution and called “Blind Spots”. Photographs accompany the films. To create these works, a fully costumed Ren danced underwater.
“Organizing costumes and ideas as well as finding teams of photographers and proper shooting locations takes months,” said Ren. And when Ren finally got underwater for her shoot, the hard work really began: Ren must dive to 10 feet below sea level to take photos, which was not only difficult for her but also for her photographers.
“组织服装和想法以及寻找摄影师团队和合适的拍摄地点需要几个月的时间,”Ren说。当 Ren终于进入水下拍摄时,艰苦的工作才真正开始了:Ren必须潜到海平面以下 10 英尺处拍照,这不仅对她来说很困难,对她的摄影师来说也很困难。
Although there were lots of challenges, Ren’s team had taken amazing photos underwater. In Jellyfish Soup, for example, she danced in a green costume among hanging hooks and artificial jellyfish. In Blind Spots, she pushed a shopping cart filled with plastic trash through the water. Ren shared her films and photos online, which drew people’s great attention to oceans.
“I truly believe that small ripples can create big waves,” said Ren. And surely, she has made more people join the act of protecting oceans!
“我真的相信小行为可以产生大影响,”任说。当然,她让更多的人加入了保护海洋的行动!

时文阅读 01—海洋颜色正发生变化
New research studying 20 years of ocean information has found that our oceans have changed the color. This also means a great change in the ecosystems(生态系统) of the oceans that is likely caused by human activities.
For tens of years, satellites(卫星) have been watching the color of Earth's oceans and collecting information on the color of light reflecting(反射) off the water. Especially one of the satellites, the Aqua satellite has recently completed 20 years of collecting high-quality global ocean-color information. A new study has examined this information and found changes in ocean color over the past 20 years that cannot be explained by natural,year-to-year variability(可变性)alone.
“I've been running models to study the ocean color. The models have been telling me for years that these changes in ocean color are going to happen,”said Stephanie Dutkiewicz, one of the study's writers.“To actually see it happening for real is not surprising. But I am scared that these changes are probably caused by human's activities.”
The ocean's color shows the life that lives in the water. Generally, deep blue water has very little life. However, greener water means the presence of ecosystems, mainly plankton(浮游生物).Without plankton, many oceanic food webs would break down. This will greatly impact the sea life and humans who depend on fish for food.
“The color of our oceans has changed,”said Dutkiewicz.“And we can't say how. But we can say that changes in color show changes in plankton communities.Plankton communities are the foundation(基础) of everything that feeds on plankton. So, we hope people take this seriously.”
Next up, Dutkiewicz will try to better understand the color changes in different ocean areas, as well as looking into what might be causing them.
1.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?

3.By which the underlined word“impact" can be replaced?
A. Benefit. B. Pollute. C. Influence. D. Improve.
4.According to Paragraph 5,Dutkiewicz is trying to_____.
A. call on people to care about oceans
B. explain how the color of our oceans has changed
C. point out the importance of oceanic food webs
D. tell that planktonis the foundation of everything
5.What may Dutkiewicz continue to study?
A. The ecosystems in different ocean areas.
B. The results of changes in ocean color.
C. The reasons for changes in ocean color.
D. The different plankton communities of different oceans.
On July 18, 2023, Australian scientists released(放出) hundreds of baby seahorses into the wild. The tiny seahorses are endangered, and the scientists hope the new seahorses will help their numbers grow.
There are over 40 different kinds of seahorses. They mostly live in warm waters around the world and form an important part of the ocean's food chain. Many kinds of seahorses are in danger of dying out. Sometimes they're caught and sold as pets. They are also sometimes caught by accident when boats are trying to catch other fish. Besides, many of the areas where they normally live, like seagrass, have been lost.
Seahorses are unusual because it's the males(雄性) who carry the babies. Males have a special pocket that allows them to carry over 100 babies at a time. The tiny babies are born alive and can swim right away.
To begin the project, scientists collected three pregnant(怀孕的)male seahorses in January. Those seahorses were brought back to the Sydney Institute of Marine Science(SIMS). After the babies were born, the scientists kept them there for five months feeding them tiny shrimp(虾) that are good for their growth. Scientist Mitchell Brennan says, “They don't have a stomach,so they're always eating.”
This is the fifth time the scientists have released seahorses into the sea,and this time was a record. Around 380 seahorses were released. The researchers say about 90% of them kept alive, which is unusually high. The researchers put tiny tags(标签) under their skin to help monitor them in the future, and they are hoping that the young seahorses will grow and produce more.
1.How many reasons why seahorses are endangered are mentioned?
A. One. B. Two. C. Three. D. Four.
2.What is special about seahorses?
A. Babies are carried in their stomach.
B. Babies can't swim after birth.
C. Only male seahorses give birth to babies.
D. They can just carry a few babies at a time.
3.What is mentioned in the fourth paragraph?
A. When the seahorse babies were born.
B. How much shrimp the seahorse babies ate.
C. How long scientists kept the seahorse babies.
D. Where scientists foundthe pregnant seahorses.
4.After the seahorses were released into the wild,
A. few of them died
B.most of them were in danger
C. they produced more babies
D. they were not used to the wild
5.What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To explain a new study on seahorses.
B. To share different kinds of seahorses.
C. To ask people to stop hunting seahorses.
D. To introduce a project of helping seahorses.

Passage B
Now we have new problems. One of 16. (big) problems is pollution. Noise pollution makes us talk more 17. (loud) and become angry more 18. (easy). Water 19. (pollute) makes our rivers and lakes very dirty. Even some of the seas have become polluted. And sometimes there isn't cough food for the animals in the water. Air pollution is the most serious kind of the pollution. Both water pollution and air pollution are not only 20. (danger) to our health, but also dangerous 21. animals and plants.
Many countries are making new laws to fight against pollution. Factories must now clean their water 22. they pour it out. They cannot let out dirty smoke 23. the air, either. More and more cars are now using a new kind of fuel 24. does not pollute the air.
25. (law) are not enough. We must take action now. We can use paper bags instead of plastic 26. (one). We can keep old cans, and plant flowers in them. Everybody 27. help to fight against pollution to keep our environment clean.
Passage C
The earth is our home. We must take care of it. This means keeping the land and water clean.
Pollution is a "dirty" word. To pollute means to make things unfit or unclean. Pollution comes in many ways. We use it, smell it, taste it and drink it. Pollution is beginning to threaten our health, our happiness and our life.
Man has been polluting the earth from the time when he first made fire, washed his clothes in the river and threw his waste on the ground. When land was used up or water became dirty, man moved to another place. At first the problem was not so serious because there was plenty of clean air, land and water. There weren't so many people then and their wants were fewer. All the dirty things could be absorbed(吸收)by nature and soon covered over. But this is no longer true. The increase of population and development of industry have changed that. Man is slowly poisoning his surroundings.
Through the use of poison, man has polluted the land, killing the animals. By putting dirty water and chemicals into rivers and lakes, we have polluted our drinking water, killing the fish.
The increasing population is part of the problem. More people, more waste.
Where is this all to end? Are we turning the world into a big rubbish dump, or is there any hope that we can get rid of the pollution? Fortunately, millions of people have been warned of pollution.
Large numbers of people are now working hard to keep pollution under control.
28.The underlined word "chemicals" in Paragraph 4 means _______ .
A.study of gases, liquids and solids to understand how they are made and what they do
B.someone who studies chemistry
C.something that causes some chemical change
D.solid or liquid substances produced by a chemical process
29.Through the uncontrolled use of poison, man has _______ .
A.made the drinking water dirty B.polluted the land
C.got good harvest D.protected the animals
30.From the sentence" More people, more waste", we know that _______ .
A.because of the increase of population and the development of industry, more and more waste is produced
B.we need more people in the future but not more waste
C.there isn't any hope that we can get rid of the pollution
D.more people have been warned of the danger of more waste
Passage D
Want to save the environment? You probably can't fix everything on your own, but by taking small steps and keeping the environment in mind every day, you can make a difference.
Think Green. Challenge yourself to think about the environment as you live your life. If you shut off lights when you leave the room and turn off your TV when you're not watching it, you'll save energy. If you take shorter showers, you'll save water.
Shop Green. Shopping is fun, but buying things you don't need is wasteful and bad for the earth. Before you buy something, ask yourself how much you'll really use it. Keep yourself away from buying products with unnecessary packaging, and whenever possible, buy things that were locally made instead of those shipped from far away.
Dress Green. Wear green trousers and T-shirts if you want. But what really matters isn't the color; it's how the clothes were made. If you want to help the environment, the best place to find clothes is at a vintage store, but you might not want to buy everything used. No matter where you shop, keep an eye out for products made from environmentally friendly materials like organic cotton, which is grown without the use of pesticides(杀虫剂).
Study Green. What's better than learning about the environment? Save it while you learn. It can be as simple as using both sides of a piece of paper before you recycle it, or reusing an old text book instead of buying a new one. If you want to do more, join an environmental group at your school, and encourage your friends to join, too.
31.The underlined phrase "a vintage store" in this passage refers to a place where you can buy __.
A.cheap clothes B.fashionable clothes
C.second-hand clothes D.clothes in special sizes
32.Which of the following acts does NOT agree with the writer's green ideas?
A.Taking shorter showers.
B.Buying products with unnecessary packaging.
C.Wearing clothes made from organic materials.
D.Using both sides of a piece of paper.
33.What's the best title for the passage?
A.Some Methods of Living Happily
B.Some Advice to Save Money in Daily Life
C.Some Steps to Live a Healthy Life
D.Some Ways to Make One's Life Green
Passage E
Microplastics (微塑料) are small pieces of plastic that enter and pollute the environment. Microplastics are not a specific kind of plastic, but any type of plastic piece that is less than five millimeters (毫米) in length.
The team, from South Korea's Incheon National University and Greenpeace East Asia, examined 39 brands of salt from 2l countries. Of these, 28 were sea salt, 9 were rock salt, and 2 were lake salt. Microplastics were not found in three of the samples (样品) : refined (精制的) sea salt from Taiwan, China, refined rock salt from Chinese mainland, and unrefined sea salt in France. Salt made in Asia had by far the most microplastics of all the samples, which has to do with where plastic most often enters the ocean. Nine of the top 10 sea salt are sampled with the highest amount of microplastics that come from Asia.
Actually, microplastics are everywhere. Sea salt and lake salt are made by evaporating (蒸发) water and getting the salt that remains. Plastic waste comes into the bodies of water from rivers, so it's no surprise to find microplastics in salt. Scientists have been finding microplastics in salt for years, including in salt from countries in Asia, Europe, and Africa. But the latest study goes a step further, finding that looking at where the salt was produced is a good way to find how much plastic pollution is in that country.
According to their results, the researchers said that an adult ingests (摄入) about 2,000 pieces of microplastics in salt per year. But microplastics in salt amount to about 6%of a person's total microplastics ingestion. Microplastics have also been found in water, fish and both indoor and outdoor air. All together, an adult ingests over 32,000 pieces of microplastics per year. 80% of them come into our bodies with the air.
It's almost impossible for humans to avoid microplastic pollution.
34. What is microplastic?
A.A kind of special plastic. B.A kind of polluted plastic.
C.Tiny pieces of plastic. D.Small harmless plastic.
35. How many salt samples were found to have microplastics?
A.39. B.36. C.28. D.21.
36. What can we know from the latest study on salt?
A.How salt was polluted around the world.
B.How much plastic pollution is in a country.
C.How plastic comes into the bodies of water.
D.Salt in Europe hasn't been polluted so far.
37. Which of the following is TRUE?
A.A sea salt sample from Chinese mainland was not found to have microplastics.
B.An adult may ingest more than 2,.00 pieces of microplastics a month.
C.Microplastics mainly come into our bodies with the salt we eat.
D.It's almost impossible for us to avoid ingesting microplastics in daily life.
38. What's the best title for the passage?
A.Microplastic pollution B.Where is microplastic from?
C.What is microplastic? D.How to avoid microplastics
Passage F
The world itself is becoming much smaller by using modern traffic and modern communication means. Life today is much easier than it was hundreds of years ago, but it has brought new problems. One of the biggest problems is pollution. To pollute means to make things dirty. 1 We see it, smell it, drink it and even hear it. Man has been polluting the earth. 2 Many years ago, the problem was not so serious because there were not so many people. When the land was used up or the river was dirty in one place, man moved to an-other place. But this is no longer true. Man is now slowly polluting the whole world. Air pollution is still the most serious. 3 Water pollution kills our fish and pollutes our drinking water. Noise pollution makes us angry more easily.
4 They stop people from burning coal in houses and factories in the city, and from putting dirty smoke into the air. Pollution by SO, is now the most dangerous kind of air pollution. It is caused by heavy traffic. We are sure that if there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution. The earth is our home. We must take care of it. 5 And we must take care of the rise in pollution at the same time.
A. Many countries are making rules to fight pollution.
B. If there are fewer people driving, there will be less air pollution.
C. Pollution comes in many ways.
D. The more people, the more pollution.
E. It's bad for all living things in the world, but it is not the only one kind of pollution.
F. Because the Earth is being polluted day and night.
G. That means keeping the land, water and air clean.

A. The purpose of the study. B. The writers of the study.
C. The process of the study. D. The advantages of the study.
2.How did Dutkiewicz feel about the changes in the color of oceans?
A. Disappointed. B. Worried. C. Surprised. D. Interested.
根据第三段Dutkiewicz说的话中的“But I am scared that these changes are probably caused by human's activities.”
Without plankton, many oceanic food webs would break down.”可知,如果没有浮游生物,许多海洋食物网就会崩溃。再结合画线词后的“the sea life and humans who depend on fish for food”可推知,海洋食物网的崩溃会极大地影响海洋生物和以鱼类为食的人类,故推测impact意为“影响”,与influence意思相近。
根据第五段中Dutkiewicz说的话尤其是“So,we hope people take this seriously.”

Why should we protect wildlife animals?
Do you know any endangered animals? Why are they in danger? I think there are many endangered animals in the world, such as tigers and pandas. When farmers cut down trees, tigers can no longer hide and hunt. Many tigers are killed by people who want to sell their fur for money. And there are few places where pandas can live.
We are not alone in the world. We human beings could not live without all the plants and animals around us. So protecting wildlife animals are very important. We must take measures to keep plants from being destroyed and stop animals from being killed. If each of us can plant a tree and build a birdhouse, the world will be more beautiful. It is very easy but useful.
