It has been four years since Grandma Joy told her grandson that she had never seen the most beautiful views of America. Since then, they have gone on many cross-country trips.
Brad Ryan had been feeling tired of studying in a vet school when he visited his 85-year- old grandma in 2015. He hoped that spending some quality family time would help lift his spirits.
As he was telling his grandma stories of his travels, however, he was heartbroken to hear that she had never seen the ocean or mountains. Ryan then asked his grandmother if she would like to go hiking with him. Needless to say, she was more than happy to agree.
They have since visited 29 different national parks across America—from the Great Sand Dunes in Colorado to the Acadia National Park in Maine. Over the four years, Ryan and his grandma have driven 25,000 miles through 38 states. And it has greatly affected his quality of life. “Seeing it through my grandmother’s eyes, who every morning wakes up and is thankful to be alive has taught me how to live,” Ryan said. “With her, I’ve had to slow down and see life in a different way, which has made it a lot richer. ”
“I love my grandma so much, and it’s just really giving me a lot of peace when she passed away. I can go back to these places, feel her spirit, and feel connected to her.” he added.

A student-led push to get solar panels installed at a middle school in Tacoma is receiving national recognition from a clean energy nonprofit organization called Generation 180. The girls involved are advocating and fundraising for the project.
Sammy Firkins, Gwen Newport and Annie Son will talk about their idea to generate solar electricity at Jason Lee Middle School in a panel discussion organized by Generation 180. In 2019, the three of them teamed up with their science teacher, Kathy Hall, to push for solar panels to be installed. Hall, who uses solar power at her own house, said it’s long been a dream of hers. The school would be the first in the Tacoma district to use solar energy.
The girls presented their idea to Gov. Jay Inslee’s STEM Education Innovation Alliance meeting in early 2019 and received enthusiastic support. They then spoke to the Tacoma school board and obtained buy-in from the district, though they were told the district did not have the roughly $ 200,000 for the 277 solar panels and that they would have to fundraise. They’ve since raised more than half that amount through grants and individual donations.
Gwen Newport said she’s always cared a lot about environmental issues and that she’s troubled that climate change does not get the attention it deserves. “At this point, I feel like it’s kind of been given to my generation almost as our responsibility now and so being able to be a part of this project and take action is really important to me,” she said.
The solar panels have not been installed at the school yet. But Hall said she estimates that the project will reduce the school’s power costs by about $ 14,000 a year, and that it also will serve an educational purpose. “We will have live data always streaming available so that people can see how the panels are working and how they relate to the amount of electricity we’re using, and it will be an incredible learning tool,” she said.
28. What is Generation 180?
A. It is the name of the girls’ team.
B. It is a project to use solar power.
C. It is a nonprofit environmental group.
D. It is a student-led push to install solar panels.
29. What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The girls raised enough money for the project.
B. The Tacoma school board rejected the project.
C. The girls made great efforts to fulfill the project.
D The district covered the expenses of solar panels.
30. How does Gwen Newport feel about climate change?
A. Confident. B. Concerned.
C. Relieved. D. Content.
31. What is the main purpose of the project?
A. To advocate for donations.
B. To serve as a learning tool.
C. To protect the environment.
D To cut down the school’s expenses.

A new study led by Dr. Rebecca Stone, has shown that children as young as four years old eat 79% more calories when they are bored, compared to when they are in a normal mood (情绪) .
The researchers have explored the behaviors that make children more likely to eat when they experience negative emotions. Often when children experience bad emotions such as boredom or sadness, caring adults will use food to soothe them. However, this behavior, known as emotional feeding, appears to increase the possibility of children eating more when they are in low spirits. As time passes, too many calories intake will have a significant effect on children’s health both mentally and physically.
Dr. Stone stresses that the experience of boredom is important in the development of children’s sense of self and creativity, so she does not recommend that children should avoid being bored. Instead, she suggests children learn to experience boredom without turning to food. She also suggests that parents turn their children’s attention away from food when they feel bored, or restructure the home food environment to make it less likely that children turn to food in response to being bored.
While there do appear to be individual differences between children in terms of their eating when bored, it is helpful to know that the feeding practices that adults use around food might shape the likelihood of this happening. Although it is attractive to use food as a tool to help children, emotional feeding might lead to greater emotional eating in the future. It is important for parents and caregivers to be aware that this short-term fix could create future problems.
It is hoped that, on the original basis of the study, the team will deeply explore other negative mood states in children and offer advice and support for families to find more effective ways to manage challenges around children eating behavior.
32. What does the research focus on?
A. How children form good living habits.
B. How children face challenges in life.
C. How boredom impacts on children eating.
D. How parents bring up their children.
33. What does the underlined word “soothe” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Ignore. B. Comfort. C. Excuse. D. Control.
34. What can we know about emotional feeding?
A. It makes children lose weight quickly.
B. It creates a new home food environment.
C. It cannot keep children trusting their parents.
D. It may not help handle bad moods in the long run.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Expectations for further studies.
B. The importance of going on a diet.
C. The necessity of managing moods.
D. Ways to strengthen family relationship.

第二节(满分25分)

Josibelk Aponte considers herself lucky. Few people get to meet their guardian angels (守护天使).
Aponte has a special place in her heart for retired Hartford police officer Peter Getz, who stood with her as if she were his own child, as she graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday.
“There are only a few moments that are so important in life,” Aponte said. “I wanted to share my graduation with everyone who’s important to me, who has been there for me, and who helped me through tough times.”
Getz certainly fits that description: He saved Aponte on June 25, 2004, a day the 23-year-old describes as the “best and worst day” of her life.
“I almost died, but I was given a second chance at life,” she said. “And it was because of Peter and all the kind people who came to help that day. They were my heroes.”
A fire in the Aponte family’s apartment broke out as Josibelk, then 5 years old, was home with her uncle Jofrey. She tried, in vain, to wake up Jofrey. Then, darkness. Meanwhile, Getz, a policeman, got there in time to see a firefighter pull a small girl from the building. In his rush to get back inside to put out the flames, the firefighter threw Aponte into Getz’s arms.
Doctors hadn’t arrived yet. Aponte had nearly stopped breathing. Getz carried out CPR (心肺复苏术) in the police car as his partner sped toward Hartford Hospital. By the time Getz passed her off to the hospital staff of the emergency room, Aponte was breathing on her own.
Aponte woke up hours later, surrounded by her family. Getz went to see her several times before the girl fully recovered. Aponte said she still has the teddy bear that Getz gave her during her hospital stay.
As time passed, they lost touch with each other as Aponte’s family moved to Vernon.

About 1wo years ago, Aponte tried to contact Getz through social media. “We really appreciate Peter putting himself in danger to save others,” said Aponte. “I owe gratitude to Peter. Had it not been for people like Peter, all of our police officers and firefighters, I couldn’t be alive now. Now I’ll graduate from college. I do hope he can attend my graduation ceremony.” To the great delight of Aponte, she eventually found Getz with the help of many kind people. Since then, the two got together regularly, sometimes meeting for lunch.
At the graduation ceremony, many people came to Getz and spoke highly of his bravery. In response, he said, “I simply did what I was trained to do, what I had to do. It is my duty. The firemen did their job, I did my job, and the hospital staff did their job. They were really heroes.” After a short pause, Getz continued, “How I wish I were as young as you! If I were 20 years younger, I would like to return to college for further education.”
