The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting (期待) all summer. I didn’t want summer to end, but I was excited about going to high school for my first week.
When I got to school in the morning on the first day, I realized how large the school was, and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. Luckily, a kind senior showed up and guided me to my homeroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar (不熟悉的) faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend Casey. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher. She was exciting and fun.
After finishing four classes without too much of a challenge, I didn’t feel too bad about ninth grade. However, the fifth class changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My teacher’s name is Mr. Valassidis but he told us to call him Mr. V. Mr. V told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing. But come on. 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was afraid.
The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too.
The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things were overwhelming (令人不知所措的): the size of the campus, the crowds (人群) and the seniors, having a totally different experience than I had ever had before was really exciting. Now, I’m really happy about high school. I have lots of friends in my classes, I really like my teachers and I’m meeting new people.

D. The reading homework on the first day of high school.
7. Which of the following can best describe the author’s first week of high school?
A. Hard and unexpected. B. Busy but eye-opening.

When I woke up on Aug 4, 2022, there was only one thing on my mind: what to wear. A billion thoughts appeared through my brain in the closet(衣橱). Not only was it my first day of high school, but it was my first day of school in a new state; first impressions are everything, and it was important for me to impress the people who I would spend the next four years with.
After carefully hunting my closet, I proudly came out in a dress from Target. The soft cotton was comfortable, and the specially designed shoulders added a little of fun. Yes, this cloth was the one. An hour later, I felt powerful as I headed toward room 1136. But as I entered class, my jaw(下巴)dropped to the floor.
Sitting at her desk was Mrs Hutfilz, my English teacher, wearing exactly the same dress as me. I kept my head down and tiptoed(踮着脚尖)to my seat. I made it through my simple introduction speech until Mrs Hutfilz stood up, jokingly saying that she liked my style. Although this was the moment I had been afraid of from the moment I walked in, all my anxiety surprisingly melted away, and the students paid attention as I shared my story. My smile grew as I laughed with the students. After class, I stayed behind, talked to Mrs Hutfilz and made a humorous and real communication.
Looking back four years later the ten minutes I spent afraid of giving my speech were really not worth it. My first period of high school certainly made the day unforgettable in the best way and taught me that Mrs Hutfilz has a brilliant sense of style!
8. Why did the author pay great attention to her clothes on the first day of high school?

A. The dress was made of silk.
B. She went into the waiting room 1136.
C. There was something wrong with her jaw.
D. She was satisfied with her first day dress.
10. How did the author probably feel after noticing her teacher’s dress?
A. Angry. B. Confused. C. Proud. D. Awkward.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the article?
A. To share an unforgettable experience.
B. To explore the troubles with dressing.
C. To introduce her stylish English teacher.
D. To stress the importance of first impressions.

Recently the topic of “school subject colors” has become a heated debate. Everyone seems to have strong opinions about which colors are associated (关联) with which school subjects, even if they graduated from school a long time ago. People associate school subjects with colors subconsciously (下意识地). There could be lots of reasons for these color associations, but the most common explanation is that they're based on something people learned as a kid. At many schools, kids were asked to use color folders to keep their notes and homework in. Many people got so used to using the same colors over and over again that they still associate those colors with subjects to this day.
Of course, the color of each subject is different depending on the school kids went to and the teachers they had as well as their personal preferences. For that reason, not everyone agrees on colors.
However, a few associations are more widely accepted. For example, science, which nearly everyone thinks is green, does not spark much debate. It includes classes like chemistry, biology, and physics and they are closely related to nature. When people think of nature and the environment, green is a key color because so many things in nature are green.
People could also choose colors based on how the subjects make them feel. For example, if a subject makes them happy and excited, they might call it yellow. However, if a subject makes them angry, they could associate it with red. As for blue, if a subject is fun and relaxing, then it's likely that blue comes to mind first.
There are no right or wrong answers for the school subject debate. While the exact reason varies from person to person, it's a fascinating topic to focus on. It goes to show that just because we see something one way and someone else sees it another way doesn't mean it's wrong. It's just two different viewpoints.
12. Where do most people think their color associations come from?
A. Their personal preferences. B. Their grades of each subject.
C Their school experience as a kid. D. Their teachers' teaching methods.
13. What does the underlined word "spark" in paragraph 3 most likely mean?
A. Cause. B. Reduce. C. Flash. D. End.
14. Which color will an relaxing subject probably remind people of?
A. Yellow. B. Red. C. Blue. D. Green.
15. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Who Likes Associating Colors to School Subjects B. How People Associate Colors with School Subjects
C. Why People Debate over Associations with Subjects D. What Colours People Associate with Certain Subjects
