At 5:12 am on April 18, 1906, people living in San Francisco were awakened by a 40-second earthquake. After a 10-second stop, an even stronger earthquake struck, lasting 25 seconds. Survivors saw the ground move in waves as high as three feet. The earthquake damaged streets, and streetcar rails.
Fires broke out soon after the earthquake, caused primarily by overturned stoves (炉子) or damaged electrical wiring. Because the city’s water mains had suffered more than 300 breaks, no water was available (可用的) to fight the fires, which rapidly burned beyond control. To control the fire, firefighters began to dynamite (炸毁) buildings in its path. Unfortunately, this method sometimes spread the fire. By the evening of April 18, 1,700 soldiers had arrived in San Francisco to help both local people and the firefighters.
After burning uncontrolled for three days, the fire finally burned itself out by the morning of April 21. More than 28,000 buildings had been destroyed, resulting in about $500 million in damage.
Although the official number of deaths was 311, it is now believed that about 3,000 people were killed. About 250,000 people (two-thirds of the city’s population) were left homeless. They were forced to live in tents (帐篷) in public parks.
Among the earthquake’s survivors was the famous Italian opera singer Enrico Caruso. On the night of April 17, he had performed (表演) the role of José in Georges Bizet’ s 1875 opera, “Carmen,” and had been scheduled for another performance on April 18. Caruso was so shocked by the earthquake that he made up his mind never to return to San Francisco again.
Ansel Adams, age 4, survived the earthquake along with his family, though their house and many things were damaged. An aftershock threw young Adams face-first into a garden wall, giving him what his friend Cedric Wright would call an “earthquake nose.” Describing his broken nose, which was never repaired, Adams would later joke, “My beauty was damaged forever. But he felt the power of the quake, which he called his “closest experience with terrible human suffering.”
4. What made it difficult to control the fire?
A. Damaged streets.
B. Fallen buildings.
C. The big problem of getting water.
D. The low number of firefighters.
5. What was the situation like after the earthquake?
A. Dead bodies could be found in public parks.
B. More than half of the locals had to find shelter.
C. Over 250,000 people had to live on the street.
D. About 28,000 buildings survived with little damage.
6. How did Enrico Caruso feel about the earthquake?
A. Completely lost. B. Very frightened.
C. Really annoyed. D. Extremely sad.
7. What.happened to 4-year-old Ansel Adams?
A. He was laughed at by his friend.
B. His family members were hurt badly.
C. His looks were unexpectedly changed.
D. He got injured while trying to protect his nose.

“Funny or die” has a whole new meaning, thanks to a study published in April in a medical joumal. Women with a strong sense of humor were found to live longer although they were ill, especially for those with heart problems and infection (感染). Happy men seemed to be protected against infection.
The researchers reported the findings from a 15-year study on the connection between the sense of humor and death among 53,556 women and men in their country. The team studied the influence of humor on people’s way of thinking, social skills and emotion development, and examined death from different conditions: heart problems, infection and other health problems.
The findings showed that for women, those who had high scores on a humorous way of thinking had a 48 percent less risk of death from all causes, a 73 percent lower risk of death from heart problems and an 83 percent lower risk of death from infection. For men, a connection was found only for the risk of death from infection — those with high humor scores had a 74 percent reduced risk. The researchers suggested the sex differences could be due to a small decrease in humor scores as the men aged. No connection was found for the influence of humor on social skills and emotion development.
“The humorous way of thinking plays an important role in people’s personality (性格) and may influence the way people cope with everyday life,” said study co-researcher Sven Svebak. “In this way, it may help reduce fighting in daily life, preventing the build-up of stress.” Although the sense of humor is a natural characteristic (特征), it can also be developed through social activities.
“I expect that children whose parents have no sense of humor when feeing challenges are less likely to develop their sense of humor to cope with everyday life when they grow up,” Sven Svebak said. “But if you had a humorless childhood, never fear — studies show people can learn to be humorous at any age.”
8. What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A. Humor could benefit people’s health.
B. Joyflil women can live longer than happy men.
C. Women who seldom laugh may fall ill easily.
D. Humor makes people pay more attention to their health.
9. The reason for men having a higher risk of death from infection than women is that ________.
A. men have poor memories as they age
B. men become less humorous as they grow older
C. men have bad sleeping quality as they grow older
D. men take part in fewer social activities as they age
10. How does the author show the research findings?
A. By listing data.
B By giving examples.
C. By stating arguments.
D. By making experiments.
11. Which of the following would Sven Svebak agree with?
A. Humoriess people have an unhappy childhood.
B. Children must learn to be humorous at an early age.
C. Humorous people can better deal with pressure in life.
D. Parents with a sense of humor are better at child education.
D
Do you like to keep fit? We’re always told that regular exercise is good for our body and mind. More and more people are taking up activities that improve their fitness. But is there a risk that some of us might get obsessed (着迷的) and overdo it?
Well, for some people, fitness has become an obsession as they aim for perfection. And fitness trackers and apps can add to this addiction, especially if someone is driven by achievement and perfectionism. And sharing data on social media means exercising becomes public and competitive, which could cause problems in someone who is vulnerable (脆弱的). Experts say this can lead to a medical condition called orthorexia nervosa, or addiction to healthy eating and over-exercise. Untreated, it can lead to malnutrition and mental health problems.
Too much exercise can also take its toll on someone’s physical health as well. Symptoms of over-exercising include injuries such as a broken leg and a low immune system. So how much exercise is too much? Researches found the ideal pace to jog was about eight kilometers per hour-and that it was best to jog no more than three times a week or for 2.5 hours in total, showing that moderate jogging is possibly more beneficial than being inactive or undertaking strenuous (剧烈) jogging.
If you’re more of a couch potato than a runner, this might sound like good news. But for amateur (业余的) athletes who can’t help but push their bodies to the limit, the advice from Martin Turner, a sports and exercise psychologist, is, “It’s all about letting go, not being obsessed, learning not to control everything, saying, ‘You don’t need to be perfect.’”
12. What is the main reason for people’s addiction to over-exercise according to paragraph 2?
A. Their need for social support.
B. Their addiction to fitness apps.
C. Their pursuit(追求)of perfectionism.
D. Their concern over health issues.
13. What does the underlined phrase “take its toll” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Going hand in hand.
B Having a bad effect.
C. Making little difference.
D. Playing an important role.
14. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The risk of fitness obsession.
B. The importance of mental health.
C. The benefits of moderate jogging.
D. The symptoms of over-exercising.
15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A. Fiction. B. Lifestyle. C. Culture. D. News
