Donatella Flick was the winner of the competition's 17th part. She wanted to find young
conductors at the beginning of their careers and make sure they had tools to enable them not to give
up until they succeed
"It's so important to train young talents and give them the oppornunities to succeed." she said
reflecting on founding the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition 33 years ago
That was why, she emphasized, the prize went beyond the cash award - which was a healthy
f15, ooo -- and offered the winner the opportunity to assist the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO
for a year. They could work with some of the world's finest conductors and lay foundations for a
successful conducting career
Flick was born Princess Donatella Missikoff. Since 1917, Flick has successfully built a career
and reputation as an artist. She now organizes charitable foundations and project all over the world
With the Competition. she was motivated by finding more talents in unexpected places -
before diversity and inclusion spread through different industries as new"buzzwords"
“One way to do this was to broaden the range for applications, so we opened up entries to
conductors from Iceland. Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland in 2018. Since then. I've been
very pleased to see conductors from those countries reach the list of competitors." she said. "One of
the major changes that I've been very happy to see is that more women are applying for the
Competition now than when we started in 19oo, and I hope this continues in future competitions."
In view of the fact that only four of the 20 conductors - that was 20 percent -- who qualified
for the 2023 competition were women, it was clear that a gender imbalance persisted.
"I think we have a new generation of female conductors emerging, and I would deeply
encourage them to apply to the Competition if they're at the start of their careers." Flick said, still
hopeful.
24. Why did Flick found the Conducting Competition?
A. To become famous
B. To continue her family tradition
C. To train the future stars of conducting.
D. To promote the finest conductors' careers
25. How did Flick help young conductors?
A. By introducing them to some world-class orchestras

C. Youths worldwide engage themselves in conducting
D. Males account for 8o% of the qualified conductors

Like most people, you have probably lost count of the number of perfect-looking shoes you
have thrown away simply because the rubber soles (橡胶鞋底) are broken. In addition to the
expense, it is also harmful to our environment. Now, thanks to a revolutionary self-healing 3-D
printed rubber material, broken shoe soles may be a thing of the past
The magicad polymer (聚合物) is developed by the researchers at the University of Southem
California's (USC) and the University of Connecticut (UConn). The team, led by USC Assistant
Professor Qiming Wang, created it through a process called photopolymerization, which uses light
to solidify the liauid used to create 3-D printed plastic. The researchers found that adding the right
amount of oxidant (氧化剂) to the liauid allowed the 3-D polymer to heal (愈合) without slowing
down the hardening process
"When we gradually increase the oxidant, the self - healing behavior becomes stronger, but the
photopolymerization behavior becomes weaker," explained Wang. "There is competition betweer
these two behaviors."
The team, who published the findings in the joumal NPG Asia Materials on February 1st, 2019
state that the repair time can be reduced by increasing the room temperature. "If you just put a
broken shoe on a bench at room temperature, the rubber will heal itself in six to eight hours," Wang
said. "If you apply heat at maybe 60-C, that expedites the healing process to about two hours."
Given the material s huge potential, it is not surprising to hear that Wang and his team have
been approached by several shoe-making companies eager to be the first to use the, technology
which is still in the early stages. Once perfected, the scientists also hope to apply the technique to
hard plastics that can be used to create self-healing toys, electronics, vehicle parts, and, if Wang has
his way, even tires
28. How do the researchers make 3-D printed plastic self- heal?
A. By changing the amount of light used
B. By raising the temperature at which it is used
C. By increasing the hardening speed of the liquid
D. By adding the proper amount of oxidant to the liquid
29. What can be inferred from the text?
A. The creation of 3-D printed plastic doesn't need light

B. The surroundtng temperature determines the speed of healing
C. Many shoe making companies got the right to use the technology
D. Throwing away broken shoe soles has been a thing of the past.

A. Strengthens. B. Delays.
.C. Accelerates.
D. Worsens.
31. Which of the following can be the best title of the text?
A. Self - healing shoes may be in our future
B. 3-D printing technology makes a difference
C. Self - healing technology will serve many fields
D. A revolution of rubber soles has changed our life

With an abundance of sun and wind, Spain is positioning itself as Europe's future leader in
green hydrogen production to clean up heavy industries. But some energy experts express caution
because this process relies on massive availability ot zero-carbon-electricity.
Green hydrogen is created when renewable energy sources power an electrical current that runs
through water, separating its hydrogen and oxygen molecules (分子). The process doesn't produc
planet-warming carbon dioxide, but less than 0.1% of global hydrogen production is currently
created in this way.
The separated hydrogen can be used in the production of steel, ammonia(氛.) and chemical
products, all of which require industrial processes that are harder to stop fossil fuels. Hydrogen also
can be used as a transportation fuel, which could one day transform the highly polluting shipping
and aviation sectors
Spain's large, windswept and thinly populated territory receives more than 2. 5oo hours of
sunshine on average per year, providing ideal conditions for wind and solar energy, and therefore
green hydrogen production
"If you look at where hydrogen is going to be produced in Europe in the next million years. it's
in two countries, Spain and Portugal," said Thierry Lepercq, the founder and president of HyDeal
Ambition, an industry. platform bringing together 30 companies. "Hydrogen is the new oil."
Lepercq is working with companies like Spanish gas pipeline corporation Enagas and global
steel giant ArcelorMittal to design an end-to-end nodel for hydrogen production, distribution and
supply at a competitfve prioe. Criticism has centered on green hydrogen's higher cost compared
with highly polluting "gray hydrogen" drawn from natural gas. Lepercq argues that solar energy
produced in Spain is priced low enough to compete
Globally, Lepercq said, "Electricity is 20% of energy consumption. What about the 80% that is
not electrified? ... You need to replace those fossil fiels. Not in 50 years' time. You need to replace
them now."
32. Why are some experts cautious about green hydrogen production in Spain?
A. It needs large amounts of sun and wind. B. It has an effect on heavy industries.
C. It causes conflicts among countries.
D It uses lots of zero-carbon electricity
33. What is the advantage of green hydrogen production in Spain?

34. What can be infcrred about green hydrogen in Spain according to Lepercq?
A. It is highly priced
B. It is easy to store.
C. It is competitive.
D. It is highly-polluting
35. What is the passage mainly about?
A.' Spain manages to use zero-carbon electricity

C. Spain takes the lead in preventing air pollution

boil over and result in unpleasant actions."33 ." she says. "By listening to them, you can
learn more about your needs and choose the best way to respond."
39?
Garai suggests the first step is to notice and examine the uncomfortable feeling in your body.
"Where in your body can you feel it? Is it still or moving? Can you describe the movement?" she
says. It may be that the feeling reminds you of a colour, shape, sound or texture. "By paying
attention to the feeling in this way, it's less likely that you'llignore it," explains Garai. t0

Using Fitness to Find Happiness
With the rising concern of a sedentary lifestyle's harnful impact on health and well-bcing, cur school has
taken active steps to organize a "Happy Fitness" campaign aimed at fostering a bealthier lifestyle and a happie
state of mind.
To launch this campaign, a series of activities such as fitness workshops and group exercises will be
organized. We will invite professional fitness trainers to lcad these activities, sharing their knowledge and skil
sets, while providing participants with personalized training programs to help them get the most out of their
efforts.
In my opinion, this campaign is a great initiative, as it will not only benefit individuals' physical health but
will also help improve their mental health. I wholeheartedly support this campaign and believe it will be a catalys
