On these dark winter evenings,I find myself daydreaming of summer.I think of the one
activity and place that quiets my mind:clamming (on Cape Cod.
Before I had kids.it was a much-needed active outing after days of vacation-level eating.
But when I went with kids, the experience took a turn from relaxation to devotion. The bay
became part of the world I was trying to build for my children. The act of clamming became an
unexpected escape,a moment when I wasn't thinking about 20 different things,when I wasn't
really thinking at all.
高二英语·第4页(共12页)
This year, for the first time,my children joined in the clamming.I kept yelping (
when my children almost raked(用耙子耙)my feet..But there was joy in having something to
teach them,to connect them not only to a generational tradition but also to the history of the
land. And when they raised their basket and it wasn't a rock for the hundredth time, but rather a
shining clam,it was a richer moment than if they had struck gold.Seeing a child holding up a
clam with an expression of success on his face does more for the heart than any meditation
想)ever could.
.I hope that one day my children will view clamming as the relaxation that I do.They are not
there yet.At this point,it is more adventure than getaway. At the end of our clamming morning,
my 6-year-old refused to leave, insisting she needed one more clam. When she finally caught one
more clam, she laughed, pride written all over her face.To be fair, perhaps what she needed to
get from clamming was not what I needed.Perhaps what she needed was to have a tiny bit of
control over this wild world, one in which she has little say.In that moment, she was victorious,
if not in calm, then in clam.
24.Why did the author go clamming before having children?
A.To get together with mer friends
B.To enjoy relaxation after overeating.
C.To spend qualty time with her family
D.To escape the responsibility as an adult.
25.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The benefits of meditation.
B.The experience of clamming.
C.The recessity of exploring the land.
D.The change of a generational tradition.
26.How do the kids fid clamming?
A.Demanding and borine
B.Complicated and nrg
C.Practical and magical.
D.Aaventurous and rewaraing.
27.What can we infer from the last paragraph about the author and her kids?
A.Clamming appealea to them most.
B.They were unwilling to leave the bay.
C.They were successful in removing stress.
D.Clamming had different meanings to them.

Plastic pollution has become a major concern for our planet.Even when plastics break
down, tiny bits of them still end up polluting the air, oceans, food chain, and even human
bloodstreams. However,a groundbreaking discovery by researchers may offer a glimmer of hope
in alleviating this global issue.
At the forefront of this innovation stands Michael Burkart,a chemical biologist at the University
of California,San Diego (UCSD),and co-founder of Algenesis Materials,a company devoted to
developing novel plastic materials.Burkart remarks,"We're essentially conducting a vast experiment
to understand the possible effects of microplastics and nanoplastics on our well-being."
Historically, most plastics have been made from crude oil,a non-renewable fossil fuel.In
contrast, four years ago,Burkart's team at UCSD revolutionized the field by introducing a new
type of plastic:polyurethane(聚氨酯),crafted from building blocks(建筑积木)naturally
produced by algae ()This essential shift signifies a move towards eco-friendlier
alternatives.
The researchers supposed that since various microbes are capable of breaking down plants
and algae.they might exhibit similar efhcieney in degrading (this novel polyurethane
plastic. To test that,Burkart's team broke their new plastic into tiny particles. They did the same
with a different type of plastic made from fossil fuels, which is known as ethyl vinyl acetate,or
EVA.After 90 days,68 percent of the new plastic had broken down. That number climbed to 97
percent after about seven months. In contrast, the researchers saw no EVA breakdown throughout
that time.
Burkart emphasizes,"My aspiration is to instill hope in people that solutions to the
microplastics crisis do exist.Having something that can readily be broken down by bacteria,"
she says,"is better than having persistent plastic in the environment."
28.What is the new type of plastic developed by Burkart's team made from?
A.Crude oil.
B.Ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA).
C.Building blocks produced by algae.
D.Nanoparticles from recycled plastics
29.What was the main goal of Burkart's team's experiment?
A.To extend the working life of plastics.
B.To assess the piodegradability of the new plastic.
C.To study the effects of algae on different types of bactena.
D.To compare the cost between the new and traditional plastics.

30.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage:
A.Microplastics can pollute the air, oceans, and food chain
B.The new plastic material can be mostly degraded by microbes.
C.The researchers have already solved the.problem of plastic pollution.
D.Ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA)failed to break down throughout the experiment.
31.What is the main idea of ihis passage?
A.The decline of fossil fuel resources.
B.The overuse of algae in plastic production.
C.The impact of microplastics on human health.
D.The potential approach of tackl plastic pollution.

A native foundation,Destiny Trust,has launched a technological programme-Kids
Innovation Africa KIA )an inspiring initiative that highlights the importance of early
education in technology and creativity, designed to empower children with essential skills in

The founder of the Destiny Trust,Mr.Abimbola Ojenike, laid great stress on technology in
shaping the future of underprivileged children. She said:"We understand that the very best way we
can favour them is by giving them skills that are in demand."According to Ojenike, the Destiny Trust
doesn't just bring out a gift from a child, but others benefit from it,and that makes them unique.
"We're ensuring that every child, regardless of where they come from,is prepared for our digital
future and given the skills they will need to thrive in today's world,"Ojenike added.
