Seeing the text from Kathy: A family picnic this weekend? I found my hands began to sweat; my heart beat hard. I wanted to yell, “No! Why would you suggest that? I thought we were friends!” I hated picnics.
My hatred of them began as a child. I always got car-sick and it was hot all the way. Air conditioning in vehicles was pretty much unheard of in 1980s Birmingham, and my mother insisted on having all the windows closed because of the unpleasant smell of gas. We would arrive at some faraway destination, usually a car park with a field attached next to a plant, and unpack tasteless and sandwiches, nearly cold sausage rolls and disgusting salads. There were never any toilets, so we had to “go” behind a bush; the memory of being discovered by a random dog-walker still embarrasses me from time to time. My mother sat in a relaxed way on a rug (小毯子) while we girls were playing nearby or maybe lying next to her. But for me this was a time when I suffered a lot. It was frightening to be attacked by ants or spot a dead rabbit in the grass.
As an adult I’d avoided all picnics, but this time I couldn’t. I just said yes, without letting Kathy sense my true feeling about them. She is my best friend and sometimes you must make sacrifices for people you like a lot. “I’ll bring the food, and you bring the drink,” she said.
My ridiculously enthusiastic family and I arrived at the picnic site. My expectations were low. Kathy and her husband Dave unloaded folding tables, chairs, a table cloth and ... a cool box of delicious food mostly purchased from a local deli (熟食店), which does all manner of pre-prepared salads and cold cuts. There was fresh bread, olives, even candles to keep away insects, music, and wine. It was completely delightful. There may have been children playing around too, even if one of them did find a dead bird (told you!). I am now a picnic enthusiast and we’re planning another. I’m even reading up on picnic recipes for it!

B. Because her family wanted to have the picnic.
C. Because she didn’t want to hurt Kathy’s feelings.
D. Because Kathy promised her a good picnic.
44. What can we infer about Kathy and her husband?
A. They are great picnic organizer. B. They have good manners.
C. They are animal-friendly people. D. They made careless of the picnic.
45. Why did the author write the text?
A. To remember an unforgettable trip.
B To record her memories of family picnics.
C. To express her thanks to her friend Kathy.
D. To describe her changed attitude to picnics
C
Is boredom a thing of the past, like black-and-white television? And, if so, is that a good thing? Julie Robinson, a former teacher who now represents the Independent Association of Prep Schools, thinks that boredom is regarded as an enemy of today’s children, and they are losing the ability to become thoughtful and reflective (沉思的).
“We should not fear boredom.” said Julie Robinson. “Boredom is valuable to children. Quiet, reflective time is just as important as purposeful activity,” she added.
Her opinion is that constant (连续不断的) activity for a child, often the result of the dreams of parents, will lead to concerned and worrying adult. The traditional ideas that children should be constantly active could prevent the development of their imagination. So anything that improves a greater thoughtfulness is to be warmly welcomed.
Parents now feel a sense of failure when they hear their children complain about being bored. They seek an electronic devices (设备) to play games at once. And we didn’t feel bored during long car journeys anymore by the impatient “Are we there yet?” because all kinds of electronic devices have been taken along to avoid even a minute of boredom. So what chance do children have to allow their thoughts to wander?
But it’s not just children who need lessons in reflection. Adults need that, too. On my train journey to work this morning, I couldn’t see a single person who wasn’t using an electronic device. No one was simply looking out of the window at the beautiful views of the county side. Not time for quiet thinking, even in the quiet library. There were emails to send, texts to read, and games to play. The wider world, seemingly, didn’t exist. The mobile phone has changed many things about our lives, and has developed an inability—among adults as well as children—to live in the present. What Julie Robinson regards is a cross-generational phenomenon (现象): the fear of “inactivity”. And she is right.
46. Julie Robinson thinks boredom is useful because it makes children .
A. find effective solutions to social problems
B. improve the ability to learn knowledge
C. have time to think and have their imagination developed
D. communicate more with their parents and friends
47. What’s the author’s attitude towards the action of parents in Paragraph 4?
A. Negative B. Hopeful
C. Positive D. Unconcerned
48. Which of the following is seen as “inactivity” according to the last paragraph?
A. Sending emails on a train.
B. Playing games with friends.
C. Planning constant activity for children.
D. Looking out of the window at the beautiful views.
49. The author mentioned the train journey to show that .
A. the trip on a quiet train was very boring
B. the view of the countryside was beautiful
C. people had too much work to do
D. electronic devices influence people’s life greatly
50. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Both adults and children like to stay alone and recall their past days.
B. People fail to leave their children enough time to think and imagine.
C. Electronic devices are always good for children.
D. Parents should tell their children how to use a mobile phone.
As we enjoy the summer ocean waves along the beaches, we may think nervously about Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and the great fear that sharks inspire in us.
Yet we are happy to see global efforts to protect the declining number of sharks. The world has realized that we need the species, like sharks, to keep a balanced ecosystem. Sharks, in particular, are “in” these days. Thanks to good public policy and famous stars such as Jackie Chan and Ang Lee, killing sharks for fin soup is no longer cool.
The demand for shark fins has been rising for decades, threatening sharks with extinction (灭绝)—up to 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins. But we have started to reverse the trend, particularly in many areas of the United States and overseas where restaurants once proudly provided delicious shark fins on the menu.
In California, a ban on the sale and possession of shark fin soup has gone into effect this year through the efforts of Wild Aid and other organizations. Overseas marketing and public efforts featuring posters on public transportation systems and TV ads have been underway for the past few years. These efforts all show signs of success, on both the supply side and the demand side of trade in shark fins.
Actually, stopping the killing of sharks is part of a broader movement to stop the killing of wild animals and the buying and selling of wildlife products. These products come from hunting elephants, tigers and rhinos, besides killing marine life. Whether it is shark fin soup or ivory piano keys, killing animals is big business. The hunting of elephants in search of ivory tusks for luxury (奢侈的) goods has become a fall-scale war. The decrease of African elephant populations is alarming. Together with international partners, the United States is leading the worldwide effort to reduce demand for high-end products that rely on killing animals.
51. Why do people begin to make efforts to protect the declining number of sharks? (No more than 15 words)
______________________________________________________
52. What’s the main reason for killing sharks? (No more than 10 Words)

41. What was the author’s attitude towards Kathy’s suggestion according to the first paragraph?
A. Supportive. B. Opposed.
C. Indifferent D. Embarrassed
42. What can be inferred from the author’s childhood picnics?
A. The food was delightful.
B. She enjoyed the journey.
C. She thought the wild unpleasing.
D. She could talk with her mother alone.
43. Why did the author accept Kathy’s picnic invitation?
A. Because she liked the picnic place.
B. To record her memories of family picnics.
C. To express her thanks to her friend Kathy.
D. To describe her changed attitude to picnics

It was frightening to be attacked by ants or spot a dead rabbit in the grass.”(但对我来说,这是一个让我痛苦的时刻。

C 47. A 48. D 49. D 50. B

根据第二段中Julie Robinson说的话“Boredom is valuable to children. Quiet, reflective time is just as important as purposeful activity,(无聊对孩子来说是有价值的。安静、沉思的时间和有目的的活动一样重要)”和第三段中“The traditional ideas that children should be constantly active could prevent the development of their imagination. So anything that improves a greater thoughtfulness is to be warmly welcomed.(传统观念认为孩子应该不断活跃,这会阻碍他们想象力的发展。因此,任何能够提高更深思熟虑的事情都会受到热烈欢迎。)”可知,Julie Robinson认为无聊是有用的,因为它能让孩子们有时间思考,且发展他们的想象力,故选C。
【47题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Parents now feel a sense of failure when they hear their children complain about being bored. They seek an electronic devices (设备) to play games at once. And we didn’t feel bored during long car journeys anymore by the impatient “Are we there yet?” because all kinds of electronic devices have been taken along to avoid even a minute of boredom. (现在,当父母听到孩子抱怨无聊时,他们会感到一种失败感。他们寻找一种可以立即玩游戏的电子设备。在长途汽车旅行中,我们再也不会因为不耐烦地问“我们到了吗?”而感到无聊,因为各种各样的电子设备已经随身携带,以避免哪怕是一分钟的无聊)”和第五段中“But it’s not just children who need lessons in reflection. Adults need that, too. (但不仅仅是孩子们需要反思,大人们也需要)”可知,当父母听到孩子感到无聊时,总是给他们电子设备让他们来玩游戏,这使得孩子没有时间进行反思,由此可推知,作者对第四段中父母的行为持否定态度,故选A。
【48题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“On my train journey to work this morning, I couldn’t see a single person who wasn’t using an electronic device.

根据最后一段中“On my train journey to work this morning, I couldn’t see a single person who wasn’t using an electronic device. No one was simply looking out of the window at the beautiful views of the county side. Not time for quiet thinking, even in the quiet library. There were emails to send, texts to read, and games to play. The wider world, seemingly, didn’t exist. The mobile phone has changed many things about our lives, and has developed an inability—among adults as well as children—to live in the present.(今天早上在去上班的火车上,我看不到一个人不使用电子设备。没有人只是简单地向窗外看县城的美景。没有时间安静的思考,即使在安静的图书馆。有邮件要发,有短信要读,有游戏要玩。更广阔的世界,似乎并不存在。手机已经改变了我们生活中的许多事情,并且已经使成年人和儿童都无法生活在当下。)”可推知,作者提到了火车旅行,是为了表明电子设备对人们的生活影响很大,故选D。
【50题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Boredom is valuable to children. Quiet, reflective time is just as important as purposeful activity,(无聊对孩子来说是有价值的。安静、沉思的时间和有目的的活动一样重要)”和第四段中“Parents now feel a sense of failure when they hear their children complain about being bored. They seek an electronic devices (设备) to play games at once. And we didn’t feel bored during long car journeys anymore by the impatient “Are we there yet?” because all kinds of electronic devices have been taken along to avoid even a minute of boredom.

根据首段中的“Yet we are happy to see global efforts to protect the declining number of sharks. The world has realized that we need the species, like sharks, to keep a balanced ecosystem.(然而,我们高兴地看到全球努力保护日益减少的鲨鱼数量。世界已经意识到,我们需要像鲨鱼这样的物种来保持生态系统的平衡。)”可知,为什么人们开始努力保护数量下降的鲨鱼是因为世界已经意识到我们需要鲨鱼来维持生态系统的平衡。。故答案是Because the world has realized that we need sharks to keep a balanced ecosystem.
根据第三段中的“The demand for shark fins has been rising for decades, threatening sharks with extinction (灭绝)—up to 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins.(几十年来,对鱼翅的需求一直在上升,威胁着鲨鱼的灭绝——每年仅为了鱼翅就杀死多达 1 亿条鲨鱼。)” People kill sharks just for their fins.
根据第四段中的“In California, a ban on the sale and possession of shark fin soup has gone into effect this year through the efforts of Wild Aid and other organizations.(在加利福尼亚州,通过野生援助组织和其他组织的努力,禁止销售和拥有鱼翅汤的禁令已于今年生效。)” Wild Aid and other organizations的努力下,禁止销售和持有鱼翅汤的禁令开始生效。 Wild Aid and other organizations.
根据第四段中的“The demand for shark fins has been rising for decades, threatening sharks with extinction (灭绝)—up to 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins.(几十年来,对鱼翅的需求一直在上升,威胁着鲨鱼的灭绝——每年仅为了鱼翅就杀死多达 1 亿条鲨鱼。)”可知,由于对鲨鱼翅的需求日益增加,每年就有1亿多条鲨鱼被猎杀,结合下文中的but可知,划线单词所在的句子与该句的内容是转折关系,结合“we have started to reverse the trend, particularly in many areas of the United States and overseas where restaurants once proudly provided delicious shark fins on the menu.(我们已经开始reverse这一趋势,特别是在美国和海外的许多地区,餐馆曾经自豪地在菜单上提供美味的鱼翅。)”
根据文章最后一段中的“Together with international partners, the United States is leading the worldwide effort to reduce demand for high-end products that rely on killing animals.(美国与国际伙伴一道,正在领导全世界减少对依赖杀害动物的高端产品的需求的努力。)” In my opinion, stopping selling and purchasing the animal products is the best way to stop killing animals.
