As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a
leader who could make the world a better place. Her passion to help others was
awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his
birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework
clubs and activities for children.
Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification (沙漠化).
“Within10 years rich farmers became worse off, and in 10 years from now they will
be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease in average
rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts have led to an estimated 75
percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification.
Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident
that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting
sustainable (可持续的 ) crops, using new technologies for water treatment and
focusing on natural products and fertilizers (肥料) rather than chemicals.
In 2012, Toumi continued her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia,
and set up a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming
philosophy into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can
create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact
of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to
water.”
By September 2016, more than 130, 000 acacia trees had been planted on 20
pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 percent survival rate. Toumi estimates that
some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. She expects to
plant l million trees by 2028. In the next couple of years, Toumi hopes to extend the
programme to Algeria and Morocco.
24. How did Toumi’s holiday trips to Tunisia influence her?
A. They fired her enthusiasm for helping others.
B. They helped her better understand her father.
C. They made her decide to leave the country.
D. They destroyed her dream of being a teacher.
25. What is the main cause of the desertification of Tunisia’s farmland?
A. Cold weather. B. Soil pollution.
C. Forest damage. D. Low rainfall.

There are as many kinds of careers as there are people. They vary greatly in the
type of work involved and in the ways they influence a person’s life. The kind of
career you have can affect your life in many ways. By making wise decisions
concerning your career, you can help yourself build the life you want. To do that,
you need as much information as possible. The more you know about yourself, the
better able you will be to choose a satisfying career.
What do people hope to obtain from a career? Some people desire a high
income. Some hope for fame. Others seek for adventure. Still others intend to serve
people and make the world a better place. Before you begin to explore career fields,
you should determine your values, your interests, and your aptitudes that will make
you competent for your future work. Most people are happiest in jobs that fit their
values, interests, and skills. Each person has many values, which vary in strength.

important to them than anything else. As a result, they focus their thoughts,
behaviour, and emotions on the goal of earning a high income. Other values include
devoting to religion, taking risks, spending time with family, and helping others.
Before making a career decision, you can ask yourself what is most important
to you and examine your beliefs to better know your values. For example, is it
important to you to work as a member of a team? Or would you rather be in charge
or work alone? If working alone or being in charge is important to you,
independence is probably one of your primary values.

Have you ever wondered what an American high school is really like? 36
A typical American high school has several large buildings and enough space
for about 1,500 students. 37 When students first arrive at school, they go
straight to their lockers (寄存柜,有锁存物柜) to put away or get their textbooks
and to hang up their outdoor clothes. As American textbooks are expensive, students
would rather rent than buy them. 38
American students have different types of school transport. They usually take a
yellow school bus or walk to school if they live close enough. 39 When they
turn 16 years of age, most take a free driving class at school for one term. If students
earn passing grades in the class and also pass their state driver’s exam, they can
begin driving themselves to school.
40 They must take science, math, English and social studies. They can
choose art, homemaking, fashion design and other classes. In some schools students
are required to take one or more of the following special classes: health education,
physical education or foreign language studies. Students move to different
classrooms for each subject. This is because each teacher has their own classroom.
There is a five-minute break between classes, to give the students the time to hurry
to their next class.
The regular school day usually ends early in the afternoon. After school more
than half of the students are involved in after-school activities. These activities
include sports-especially football, basketball, baseball and soccer or clubs, such as
yearbook, speech, school newspaper, photograph or student government.
A. Every student is given a locker.
B. Each day, students take six or seven classes.
C. Sometimes their parents drive them to school.
D. Because each teacher has their own classroom.
E. Students must pay back if they lost any of them.
F. In some schools students are required to take some special subjects.
G. This article will describe a typical American high school and its students.
