Read again, then answer the questions.
1.Why is the dodo “just a character” to some readers?
Because many people only know it from books and stories, not as a real, once-living bird.
2. What do “as happy as a clam” and “as dead as a dodo”
mean?
(1) as happy as a clam是一个英文习语,省略了后面的at high water(涨潮),意为“非常高兴的,相当满足的”。
(2) as dead as a dodo也是一个英文习语,意为“彻底死亡;
3.Why does the writer use the two expressions at the end of
the passage?
The writer uses these two expressions to make readers feel strongly about protecting animals and to encourage them to take action.
Think and Share
1.What is the purpose of the passage?
You may find the writing purpose from the title, beginning or ending of the passage. Usually, the writer wants the readers to learn a lesson or take some action.
The purpose of this passage is to ask readers to protect animals and live in harmony with them.
2. How do people’s actions influence animals? Give
an example.
For example, humans cut down trees and destroy dodos’ homes.
As middle school students, what can we do to protect animals?
Further Thinking
Avoid buying things made from animals, like fur or ivory.
Reduce waste, reuse things, and recycle to help protect the environment.
Ask our school and friends to do things that are good for animals and nature.

Language Points
(1) used to...
1. Actually, there used to be thousands of us — for real.
E.g. Jimmy used to live here.
I used to play soccer every weekend, but now I’m more into hiking.
(2) for real
E.g.This is not a joke. I am for real.
I’m telling you, for real, that movie was amazing!
2. What a peaceful and safe life!
E.g.What a clever boy he is!
What an amazing discovery the scientists made!
名词,因此句型中what后面一般跟的是(a/an+)形容词+名词;
E.g.What a beautiful song you sing!
What a lovely flower it is!
How beautifully you sing!
How lovely the flower is!
3. What’s more, their pigs, cats and dogs ate our eggs.
E.g. She studies hard every day. What’s more, she often helps
her classmates with their studies.
The hotel has a very beautiful view by the sea. What’s more, it's very cheap.
4.As a result, we soon died out.
E.g. He hurt his leg. As a result, he didn’t take part in the
football match.
E.g. This animal died out millions of years ago.
