Either the locks were too large, or the key was too small. However, on the second time round, she came upon a low curtain (帘子) she had not noticed before and behind it was a little door. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries, people have developed different ways of telling the time. About 5,500 years ago, the Egyptians invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow (影子) showed the movement of the sun. So people were able to know midday. The Egyptians made a sundial about 3,500 years ago. It was smaller than the sun clock and could let people know the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock or a sundial. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows (流动) from one bottle to another. When the water reaches a certain level, it shows the hours. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3,400 years ago. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time. In the 13th century, the mechanical clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries it was developed. For example, spring (发条) were added around 1500. This enabled people to get the correct time and allowed clocks to be smaller. In 1927, the first quartz clock was developed. Clocks became cheaper to build. It’s also cheaper for ordinary people to own a clock. People began depending on them more and more to run business, markets and so on. More recently, in 1956, came the digital clock. And nowadays satellites send our mobile phones the time to the exact second. There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed on time and not being late for school or work. 根据短文内容,选择最佳答案。 36. According to the passage, we can’t use the ________ to tell the time on a rainy day. (D) A team of Chinese scientists and climbers reached the top of Qomolangma at about 12:30 p. m.on Tuesday, May 23. It’s the second time since last year for the science expedition (考察) team to reach the top. The team was made up of 13 Chinese scientists and climbers. They set off at a height of 8,300 meters for the top at about 3 a. m. After more than 8 hours of hard climbing, they arrived at the 8,830-metre weather station. After fixing steel ropes, changing batteries and putting in wind speed and direction sensors (传感器), they finished improving the world’s highest automated (自动化的) weather station, which was set up by Chinese scientists last year. Besides, they collected ice-snow samples on the top for further research. The weather station records temperatures, wind speeds and other key data for studying climate change. Climate scientists have found that global warming has had a large influence on the glacier number on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (青藏高原). Over the last fifty years, the temperature on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau has risen about 0.5℃every ten years. Studying the ecosystem (生态系统) of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau will help scientists have a better understanding of the influence of climate change, and help scientists and the government make proper decisions. Since the mid-20th century, China has sent different research expedition teams to Qomolangma. But because of limited resources and technologies, many key scientific questions are still unanswered, such as whether global warming can melt the ice at the top of Qomolangma, and how ecosystem can change as height increases to extremity. 根据短文内容,判断下列各句正(T)、误(F)。 41. All the key scientific questions have been answered up to now. Last term, I bought a magazine that I had always wanted. I liked it so much that I was careful every time I carried it. But one day, my best friend Tom took the magazine without telling me. When I found it, I was very angry. But I calmed down soon. I thought of how Tom helped me when I was in trouble and I didn’t want to break the relationship between us. So I controlled my anger and decided to have a talk with him. I told him that he should tell me if he wanted to read the magazine. After the talk, our relationship became stronger. From this experience, when we are angry, we should calm ourselves down and learn to reflect. The most important is to communicate with others on time so that we can solve the problems better. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
