Mr. Paul was a professor of medicine, who was very strict with the students. Whenever Mr. Paul took the chair on the exam committee (委员会), the students would be in fear, because he was seldom pleased with the answers they gave. A student would be lucky enough if he or she could receive a good mark from him. At the end of the term, the students of medicine would take their exam again.
Now a student entered the exam room and got seated before the committee. This student was a little nervous as he knew it would not be so easy to get through the exam at all.
Mr. Paul began to ask. The student was required to describe a certain illness, his description of which turned out to be OK.
Then Mr. Paul asked about the cure (药剂) for the illness, and the student, too, answered just as right.
“Good,” said the professor, “and how much will you give the patient?”
“A full spoon,” answered the student.
“Now you may go out and wait for what you can get.” said Mr. Paul. At the same time the committee discussed carefully the answers the student had given.
Suddenly the student noticed that there was something wrong with his last answer. “A full spoon is too much,” he thought to himself. Anxiously, he opened the door of the room and cried, “Mr. Professor, I’ve made a mistake! A full spoon is too much for the patient. He can take only five drops.”
“I’m sorry, sir,” said Mr. Paul loudly, “but it’s too late. Your patient has died.”
1. The students were afraid of Mr. Paul because ________.
A. their answers seldom satisfied him B. they often angered and disappointed him
C. their answers often surprised him D. Mr. Paul often misunderstood the students
2. Before he left the room, the student was almost sure that ________.
A. he had made a terrible mistake B. his last answer had been wrong
C. he had not done well in the exam D. he would pass the exam and only needed to wait
3. What would possibly happen next?
A. The student might not pass the exam.
B. The student would try to save the patient.
C. Mr. Paul was very pleased and would give the student a good mark
D. The student would be very happy when he heard “Your patient has died.”

I travel a lot, and I find out different ”styles” of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”
Foreign tourists are often confused in Japan because most streets there don’t have names. In Japan, people use landmarks in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the comer. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat, and in many places, there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”
People in Los Angeles, California. have so idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles! “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.
It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan believe that “I don’t know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!
4. When a tourist asks the Japanese the way to a certain place they usually ________.
A. describe the place carefully B. tell him the names of the streets
C show him a map of the place D. refer to recognizable buildings and places
5. Which is the place where people measure distance in time?
A. New York. B. Los Angeles. C. Kansas. D. Iowa.
6. People in Yucatan may give a tourist a wrong answer
A. for fun B. as a test C. in order to save time D. so as to be polite
7. What can we infer from the text?
A. New Yorkers are generally friendly to visitors.
B. People have similar understandings of politeness.
C. It’s important for travelers to understand cultural differences.
D. It’s useful for travelers to know how to ask the way properly.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. D 7. C

Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry. Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.

A. It is popular in Portugal and Spain.
B. It causes water shortages around the world.

10. The author uses power walking as an example mainly because _________.
A. it is an outdoor sport

C. it uses fewer resources
D. it is recommended by experts
11. The author writes the passage to _________.

Research studies indicate that children who eat breakfast perform better at school. Maybe it works that way for adults too since our brains need fuel to work properly.
Skipping breakfast is a common way for people who are trying to lose weight, but unfortunately, it’s usually not a successful way. Your body (or more likely, your brain) expects to be refueled a few times each day. When you don’t eat breakfast, you may feel so hungry by lunchtime that you eat more foods than you normally would, which cancels out the calories you cut by skipping breakfast. You may also be tempted to choose foods that are not the healthiest choices when you feel like you are starving.
For many people, eating breakfast may be an important part of a weight loss diet. Research studies tell us that people who eat breakfast are more likely to keep up a healthy weight. Some experts believe that breakfast keeps your metabolism (新陈代谢) running higher. In fact, it takes three or four days of eating nothing before the body starts changing down your metabolism. It’s more likely that people who regularly eat breakfast also make good dietary choices the rest of the day.
Breakfast should include a healthy source of protein and plenty of fiber; the combination will help satisfy your hunger and will keep you feeling full until lunchtime. The protein can come from low-fat meat, low-fat dairy products, or nuts. Eggs are also a good source of protein. High-fiber foods, include fruits, vegetables and whole grains.
If you really don’t like to eat breakfast in the morning, you can split it up into two smaller meals. Eat a hard-boiled egg, or a small cup of yogurt at home before you leave for work, and then about an hour or two later, take a break from work and snack on an apple and a handful of healthy nuts like pecans or walnuts.
12. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A. Eating breakfast keeps us healthier than skipping it.
B. Skipping breakfast isn’t very useful for losing weight.
C. Our brain needs a lot of fuel to work properly.
D. What healthy food we should eat for breakfast
13. What does the underlined word “tempted” Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Pretended. B. Determined. C. Attracted. D. Warned.
14. All the following are a good source of protein EXCEPT _______.
A. low-fat meat B. low-fat dairy products
C. vegetables D. eggs
15. The passage is most probably taken from _______.
A. a news report B. a personal diary
C. a biology book D. a healthy life website
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. C 15. D

A

C. show him a map of the place D. refer to recognizable buildings and places
8. Which of the following is the author most probably in favor of?

A. It is popular in Portugal and Spain.
B. It causes water shortages around the world.
C. It pollutes the earth with chemicals and wastes.
D It needs water and electricity to keep its courses green.
10. The author uses power walking as an example mainly because _________.
A. it is an outdoor sport
B. it improves our health
C. it uses fewer resources
D. it is recommended by experts
11 The author writes the passage to _________.

B. encourage us to go in for green sports
C. discuss the major influence of popular sports
D. introduce different types of environment-friendly sports

C vegetables D. eggs
15. The passage is most probably taken from _______.
A. a news report B. a personal diary
C. a biology book D. a healthy life website
