The city has taken advantage of technologies to become more responsive to its residents' needs. But technology alone is not sufficient to make today's cities loveable. Boston has discovered that it also, needs to reach the old-fashioned low-tech community and integrate that technology with city life. Kris Carter rolled out Boston's smart city program in 2014. It started with an app that residents could download to report locations where sidewalk s needed repair. The city sorted out those report s and ranked them in a database, which repair crews used to prioritize their work. The system worked beautifully, except for one problem: most of the alerts(警报) came from wealthier neighborhoods, where the concentration of smartphone-equipped residents was highest. “The complaints from the app didn't always correspond to the greatest community need for repairs,” explained Carter. Carter's group has moved away from the model common to many smart city initiatives of letting tech-savvy(精通技术的) residents drive the process. Instead, they run meetings to find out what problems people in different neighborhoods care about solving. When it came to sidewalks, Boston introduced a second method of collecting repair tips, hiring people to get out and walk the city's 1, 700 miles of sidewalks to make a note of their condition. Whether using low-tech or high-tech approaches, said Carter, to stay smart, a city needs to continually reassess its options to spot opportunities to improve residents' lives. 'Take the sidewalk repair program, walking the streets proved to be a useful. if inefficient, way to prioritize repair needs. But last year the group found that walkers' mobile phones could be tracked as they moved along the streets, and that data could be analyzed to identify sidewalk routes which are most often used by neighborhoods. “Combined with our other sidewalk information, that gave us an even better way to predict where faster repairs would do the most good,” said Carter. “We're really always looking for whatever mix of approaches to best solving the problem.” 32. What is the first paragraph mainly about? A. The citizens' life. B. The city's reputation. C. The city's management. D. The benefits of technology. 3. What problem did Kris Carter's team meet when carrying out their program? A. They couldn't serve all residents well. B. They faced many technical obstacles. C. They were not supported by residents. D. They were annoyed by being short- staffed. 34. Which of the following might Kris Carter most agree with? A. Maximizing the benefits of technology. B. Mixing approaches to solving problems. C. Giving full play to the power of residents. D. Letting tech companies be a leading role. 35. What can be a suitable title for the passage? A. A Smart City: More than Just Tech B. Its population has crashed rapidly in the last few years. The reason for this is that their natural environment is being destroyed. People cut down trees and use chemicals to kill the plants. It is time to raise the awareness of protecting monarch butterflies and take effective measures. People are supposed to stop cutting down trees and ensure enough plants for monarch butterflies to feed on. Besides, farmers should be taught to use chemicals properly. It’s our duty to rescue endangered animals. Only by living in harmony with animals can we have a better planet to live on. 第二节: With his eyes fixed on Peter’s pocket, he wondered what Peter would do. Hesitantly taking out the treasured sea shells in his pockets, Peter asked in a low voice, “Sir, can these help cover the cost?” Watching the 5-year-old carefully lay down all his shining shells on the counter, the man was somewhat touched, but he just pretended to be counting the shells seriously, “Let me see, one, two…ok. The shells are just enough. You can take the doll and save the money”. Hearing this, Peter felt truly amazed and thanked the shopkeeper, who actually wanted to thank the two little kids, especially when he saw a big smile quickly spread over the little girl’s innocent face. They said goodbye and went out happily with the doll. Seeing Peter leaving happily with his sister holding the doll tightly, an assistant in that shop got surprised. Since his boss had been in such a low mood recently that he seldom wore any smile and talked much. When the shopkeeper turned around and noticed the assistant’s surprised look, he said smilingly, “lovely kids, aren’t they? When I see the little boy is willing to take all he has to buy a doll for his lovely sister, it really warms my heart.” The assistant replied thoughtfully, “When he grows up, he will remember he purchased a doll for his sister with the shells from a shopkeeper, which will surely warm his heart, too.” 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
