W:Did I tell you? I’ve decided to move from the suburbs into the city. The drive to work during rush hour is really killing me.
M:I know what you mean. But living in town can be pretty expensive.
W:That’s true, but I found a nice place only about a mile away. The rent is reasonable, and it’s the perfect size. Parking isn’t a problem. The best part is that they allow pets.

W:Welcome to Citibank. How may I help you, sir?
M:Well,I came in today to pay my credit card bill that came in the mail, but I just noticed that there seems to be a mistake on one of the charges.
W:I can definitely help you with that, sir. First, may I see your ID and your card, please?
M:Yes,here’s my driver’s license and my Visa card.
W:Great. So,I’m showing a total balance of $4,900.Is that correct?
M:No,it’s not. There was a charge of $3,800 on October 20,but it really should have been $380. They must have added a zero by mistake, and I just didn’t notice when I signed the receipt.
W:That is not the first time I’ve heard of this happening. I’ll call the Apple Store on Third Street and see what they have to say. Do you remember what you purchased that day?

W:I’ve decided to become a vegan.
M:You mean you aren’t going to eat meat anymore?
W:Well, yes, but a vegan doesn’t eat anything animal related. A vegetarian doesn’t eat meat, but they will still eat dairy, eggs, and honey. A vegan won’t eat anything that comes from an animal.
M:That seems really difficult. What will you eat instead?
W:There are many things I can still eat. Anything with fruits and vegetables is good. Nuts, most bread, and beans are also great. I can also drink soymilk in place of regular milk.
M:What about cheese? It would be really hard for me to give up cheese,I think.
W:1 can’t eat cheese because it comes from milk, but believe it or not, there are many things that can replace cheese, such as soy cheese or nut cheese.
M:I don’t mean to be rude,but I really don’t think it’s a good idea.
W:I’ll make a vegan dinner and invite you over. You’re going to be really surprised at how tasty vegan food can be!

M:Good morning, madam. I see you’re reading The New York Times.
W:Yes. I always buy a copy from a newsstand outside my favorite café during the week, and I get the weekend newspaper delivered to my house.
M:That must get expensive after a while.
W:It does. I pay about ten dollars a week altogether.
M:Well, what if I told you that you could read your favorite newspaper every day for less than five dollars a week?
W:That would be great. But I’m not interested in signing up for a vacation package or anything like that.
M:Oh,no...nothing like that. I guess you have a computer,right?
W:Uh,yeah. I have an iPad.
M:Perfect. You can now read New York Times on a special app for your smartphone and tablet. You can read all the articles you like, find stories from the past forty years, and save things to read for later.
W:That sounds amazing. But why is it so much cheaper than the regular paper?
M:Think about all the machines and employees it takes to print the paper every day. The digital one is much cheaper, and we pass those savings on to you.
W:Sign me up!

I didn’t get a smartphone for a long time because I thought they were too expensive. And my old phone was fine for making phone calls and sending text messages. But I saw everyone else with their cool-looking phones and felt a little jealous. When I bought my first smartphone, I was really surprised at how reasonable the cost was. There was a lot to pay right away, but the monthly bill turned out to be similar to that of my old phone. I never did a lot on the Internet before, but with my smartphone, I’m entertained every day. I also love being able to check my email and use the map when I’m driving. I haven’t really gotten into other apps, though. And I seldom use it to chat with my friends. The main thing I like better is the sound quality. With my old phone, it was really hard to hear people on the other end of the line, but my smartphone is much clearer. However, not everything is better. You know how some people say they can’t live without their smartphones? I sort of feel like that now. I get nervous when I can’t find my phone or connect to the Internet, and I always feel like I need to check my messages. And I get this: I dropped my phone on the ground the other day, and the whole thing broke! I had to spend a hundred dollars to get it fixed. Whenever I dropped my old phone, it was fine!

这是一篇记叙文。文章讲述的是作者具有天生的好嗓音,作者对声音进行精心地培养和训练,这给作者带来了名利,但作者也失去了随意运用和控制声音的自由。
25.推理判断题。根据第一段“I was given a voice. That’s what people said about me I trained my voice, because it would be a shame to waste such a gift. I pictured this voice as a greenhouse plant and made sure it was provided with the right temperature, the right amount of water. I relieved its fears. I told it not to tremble. I nursed it, I trained it, and I watched it climb up inside my neck.(我被赋予了声音。
根据第三段第二句“People said my voice would bloom only for a certain term: finally it would drop off and gone with it would be all the fame and wealth.(人们说我的声音只会在某一个时期绽放:最后它会落下,随之而去的将是所有的名利。)”可知作者的声音开始失去吸引力,shrivel本意为“枯萎,皱缩”,在本句中指吸引力变少,故选D项。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段“Now it’s evening: the bright lights come on, and excitement quickens in the streets. We sit in this hotel room. Soon it will be time for us to go out. We have to attend a grand occasion. the two of us chained together as always. I have to put on its favourite dress, its favourite necklace and wind a fur around it. Then I have to go out: shining like ice: my voice attached to my throat like an invisible vampire

It grew still colder, and his arm ached. and began to grow stiff and numb. He shouted again. "Will no one come? Mother! Mother!" But his mother had looked anxiously along the dike road many times since sunset for her little boy, and now she had closed and locked the cottage door, thinking that Peter was spending the night with his blind friend, and that she would scold him in the morning for staying away from home without permission. Peter tried to whistle, but his teeth chattered with the cold. He thought of his brother and sister in their warm beds, and of his dear father and mother. "I must not let them be drowned, he thought. "I must stay here until someone comes."
Paragraph 2:
The moon and stars looked down on the child crouching on a stone on the side of the dike. His head was bent, and his eyes were closed, but he was not asleep. "I'll stand it somehow, "he thought. So, he stayed there all night keeping the sea out. Early the next morning a man going to work heard a groan as he walked along the top of the dike. Looking over the edge, he saw a child clinging to the side of the great wall. "What's the matter?" he called. "Are you hurt?" "I'm keeping the water back!" Peter yelled. "Tell them to come quickly!" The alarm was spread. People came running with shovels and the hole was soon mended. They carried Peter home to his parents, and before long the whole town knew that he had saved their lives that night.

第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
A
Hey, man,
Good to hear from you again. Your e-mail came in just as I was chatting with another friend, Jeff. I wish I had better advice.
You know, after I left the Shenandoah Valley, my next job was in Rocky Mount. The two other sportswriters on staff, Travis and Jeff, were in their mid-20s too. Honestly, we’d come to Rocky Mount to leave Rocky Mount. We complained about our shop and envied the Charlotte Observer and the Raleigh News & Observer. What resources they had! Writers who covered only one team didn’t have to lay out pages. Talk about living the dream. If we could just get to one of those places! Then we could go somewhere else!
Travis, Jeff, and I bonded over our desire to part ways. We ate dinner together and went out to cover our games and came back to help send the final pages to the printer. On the best nights, we’d grab the news editors and play Wiffle ball, laughing and joking until almost sunrise.
We all left there within a year, as intended. Jeff became one of the most well-known NASCAR writers in the country, with almost 200,000 Twitter followers. Now he’s got his own media company that’s doing quite well. In 2017, Jeff and I went to a Charlotte Knights game, and Jeff said something about Rocky Mount that I won’t forget. “I didn’t appreciate it then, but honestly, when I look back, it’s probably the best time I’ve ever had in my career.”
Maybe success isn’t measured in achievements, or “being happy with who you are”. Goals and personal peace are selfish markers, and I don’t mean to imply selfishness is a bad thing, not at all. Selfishness is the axis of humankind, from cavemen to astronauts to saints on earth. Individual accomplishments bring worldwide accomplishments. But all of the accomplishments may not leave you feeling successful, right?
The point is, maybe success is a smaller calculation, something more like what Jeff hinted at. Maybe success is having the wherewithal (所需的物资) to be grateful at the precise moment you have something to be grateful for.
Thank you for writing, old friend.
Mike

I was given a voice. That’s what people said about me I trained my voice, because it would be a shame to waste such a gift. I pictured this voice as a greenhouse plant and made sure it was provided with the right temperature, the right amount of water. I relieved its fears. I told it not to tremble. I nursed it, I trained it, and I watched it climb up inside my neck
My voice bloomed. People said I had grown into my voice. Invitations to perform flooded over us. All the best places wanted us. I was sought after, or rather my voice was. We went everywhere together and gave performances. Bouquets (花束)were thrown to it. Money was presented to it. Men fell on their knees before it. Applause flew around it.
Then my voice began to shrivel. People said my voice would bloom only for a certain term: finally it would drop off and gone with it would be all the fame and wealth. I have noticed it so far. Fear has entered me since my voice has used up most of my life. I’ve given it all my love. But my voice is still as greedy as ever. It wants more: more and more, more of everything it has had so far.
Now it’s evening: the bright lights come on, and excitement quickens in the streets. We sit in this hotel room. Soon it will be time for us to go out. We have to attend a grand occasion. The two of us chained together as always. I have to put on its favourite dress, its favourite necklace and wind a fur around it. Then I have to go out: shining like ice: my voice attached to my throat like an invisible vampire (吸血鬼).
25.Why did the author compare her voice to a greenhouse plant?
A.To introduce her way to grow a plant.
B.To stress her hard efforts to train her voice.
C.To express her determination to show her gift.
D.To indicate her strong desire to improve her skill.
26.What does the underlined word “shrivel’ in paragraph 3 mean?
A.go up B.die away
C.grow more pleasant D.become less attractive
27.What can we infer from the last paragraph of the text?
A.The author totally ruined her fame.
B.The author gradually lost her freedom.
C.The author eventually accepted her voice.
D.The author greatly enjoyed her performances.

China successfully sent the 52nd and 53rd satellites of its domestically developed BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS)—the last two medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellites for the BDS-3 constellation (星座)—into space on Monday, marking the completion of the global navigation system’s core constellation deployment (部署) and this year’s BDS satellite launch campaign.
Launched from Xichang Satellite Launch Center, Sichuan Province, on board a Long March-3B carrier rocket with an Expedition-1 upper stage, the two satellites were injected into planned orbits after more than three hours’ flight.
Since the first BDS-3 satellite was launched on November 5, 2017, China has conducted 18 BDS satellite launch missions, successfully sending 30 into their planned orbit, setting a national record for highest mission frequency and success rate.
In-orbit tests will be carried out before the two MEO satellites are commissioned (正式委托). By then the core constellation for the Chinese global navigation satellite system will be successfully completed.
Wang Ping, chief designer of the BDS-3 system, said that the hybrid constellation design, in which three groups of satellites—the Inclined Geo Synchronous Orbit (IGSO), MEO and geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO)—work in concert in different orbits, was an exclusive BDS innovation and a world first. “Existing global navigation satellite systems, such as the US GPS and Russia’s GLONASS, only have a MEO satellite constellation,” said Wang.
The MEO satellites, in orbit 20,000 kilometers above Earth, are a special type of satellite providing global service, while the IGSO and GEO satellites, in an orbit 360,000 kilometers above Earth, mainly enhance regional service quality, according to Wang. That explained why completion of the MEO constellation was significant, marking the completion of the core network for BDS-3, meaning a stable BDS-3 global coverage without weak points has been carried out.
Feedback shows that the BDS service quality was already comparable to GPS since the end of 2018, and after completing BDS-3, “We will be as good as any GNSS.” Wang said.
29.How many BDS satellites were sent into their planned orbit successfully?
A.3. B.18. C.30. D.36.
29.What’s the advantage of BDS compared with GPS and GLONASS?
A.The diverse functions.
B.The excellent service quality.
C.The lower cost of designing it.
D.The ability to work in different orbits.
30.Why are the MEO satellites important?
A.They enhance regional service quality.
B.They can be put into use immediately.
C.They can enter farther orbits.
D.They can serve the world.
31.What may be the best title for the text?
A.China Becomes the First Country to Launch a MEO Satellite
B.The Core Constellation of BDS-3 Completes Deployment
C.The BDS-3 System Has Benefited Many Countries
D.Exploring Space Is Very Important to the World

Self-driving cars are just around the corner. Such vehicles will make getting from one place to another safer and less stressful. They also could cut down on traffic, reduce pollution and limit accidents. But how should driverless cars handle emergencies (突发情况)? People disagree on the answer. And that might put the brakes on this technology, a new study concludes.
To understand the challenge, imagine a car that suddenly meets some pedestrians in the road. Even with braking, it’s too late to avoid a crash. So the car’s artificial intelligence must decide whether to swerve (急转弯). To save the pedestrians, should the car swerve off the road or swerve into oncoming traffic? What if such options would likely kill the car’s passengers?
Researchers used online surveys to study people’s attitudes about such situations with driverless cars. Survey participants mostly agreed that driverless cars should be designed to protect the most people. That included swerving into walls (or otherwise sacrificing their passengers) to save a larger number of pedestrians. But there is a hitch (困境). Those same surveyed people want to ride in cars that protect passengers at all costs—even if the pedestrians would now end up dying. Jean Bonnefon is a psychologist at the Toulouse School of Economics in France. He and his colleagues reported their findings in Science.
“Autonomous cars can completely change transportation”, says study coauthor Iyad Rahwan. But, he adds, this new technology creates a moral dilemma (道德两难) that could slow its acceptance.
Makers of driverless cars are in a tough spot, Bonnefon’s group warns. Most buyers would want their car to be programmed to protect them in preference to other people. However, regulations might one day instruct that cars must act for the greater good. That would mean saving the most people. But the scientists think rules like this could drive away buyers. If so, all the potential benefits of driverless cars would be lost.
Compromises might be possible, Kurt Gray says. He is a psychologist at the University of North Carolina. He thinks that even if all driverless cars are programmed to protect their passengers in emergencies, traffic accidents will decrease. Those vehicles might be dangerous to pedestrians on rare occasions. But they “won’t speed, won’t drive drunk and won’t text while driving, which would be a win for society.”
32.The underlined word “challenge” in paragraph 2 refers to____________.
A.people’s negative attitudes towards self-driving cars
B.how self-driving cars reduce traffic accidents
C.the technical problems that self-driving cars have
D.how self-driving cars handle emergencies
33.According to the text, online surveys show that_____________.
A.self-driving cars’ artificial intelligence needs improvement
B.the busy traffic may be a problem for self-driving cars
C.people are in a moral dilemma about driverless cars
D.self-driving cars should be designed to protect drivers
34.What can we learn from the fifth paragraph?
A.Regulations are in favour of drivers.
B.Most people dislike self-driving cars now.
C.Self-driving car makers are in a difficult situation.
D.The potential benefits of driverless cars are ignored.
35.What is Kurt Gray’s attitude toward self-driving cars?
A.Favorable. B.Doubtful. C.Critical. D.Disapproving.

How to Feel Connected
It's easy to feel disconnected from what is going on around you in today's fast-paced world. 36. You can get in touch and feel connected, however, by following the tips below:
Consider why you feel disconnected. Knowing what is making you feel disconnected can help you choose the best ways to address it. 37. Ask yourself these questions: Are you keeping yourself occupied with work too much? Do you rely on electronic communication instead of face to face communication? Do you lack friendships that are satisfying?
Interact with people in person. Technology is a great way to stay in touch, but sometimes you need to spend time with other people in person. 38. You can also take steps to feel more connected by making small-talk with strangers who are sharing parts of your day.
39.
Your loved ones could feel shy, so you may never know how to improve your relationship unless you ask the right questions. Asking them to open the doors can give you some insight on what you can do. Learning this information can help to strengthen your bond.
Show your commitment to them. Simply showing up and being there for your loved ones says a lot about how much you value your relationships. Putting in the time shows them that you are committed and want to stay connected. 40.
Show appreciation. A simple “thank you” goes a very long way. Unfortunately, it is something that people who are close often take for granted. Telling someone you appreciate their time, love, and efforts can strengthen your bond and help you to become more connected.
A.Ask others what they need from you.
B.Sometimes you can feel isolated and distant from the ones you love.
C.Be brave to express your love.
D.Reach out to people to schedule a time to get together.
E. Attending family events, or simply visiting someone once a week can help to strengthen your relationship and keep it strong.
F. Targeting your efforts toward those issues allows you to close that distance more effectively.
G. You can have a gift delivered to friends on special occasions.

Trackers on Ice
Just because a scientist puts a GPS tracking collar on a wild polar bear does not mean the animal will willingly keep it on. 41 , these huge collars are purposefully loose so that if one becomes annoying, a bear can 42 it. But scientists have now found a way to use signals from the discarded(丢弃的)devices.
“These dropped collars 43 would have been considered garbage data,” says Natasha Klappstein, a polar bear researcher at the University of Alberta. She and her colleagues instead used 44 from such collars, left on sea ice in Canada's Hudson Bay, to track the ice itself. For their study, published in June in The Cryosphere, the researchers 45 twenty collars that sent movement data consistent(与······一致的)with ice drift rather than polar bear 46 between 2005 and 2015. The resulting records of how melting ice typically drifts in Hudson Bay are unique; there are no easily 47 on-the-ground sensors, and satellite observations often cannot 48 capture the motion of small ice sheets.
The team compared the discarded collars' movements with widely used ice-drift modeling data from the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). Collar data indicated that the NSIDC model underestimates the speed at which ice moves around in Hudson Bay--as well as the overall 49 of drift. Over the course of several months the model could drift away from an ice sheet's location by a few hundred kilometers, the researchers say.
This means the bears may be working harder, when moving against the direction of the ice, than scientists had 50 .“Since we're underestimating the speed of drift, we're likely underestimating the energetic effort of polar bears," says Natasha Klappstein. The research reveals 51 insight (洞悉) into how highly mobile ice moves. As melting increases in coming years, such ice will likely become more 52 farther north, in the central Arctic. Scientists had known NSIDC data could underestimate drift speeds, but “any time we can find a data 53 ,it is a good thing.”
Plus, such data could improve predictions about how oil spills or other pollutants may spread in seas 54 with drifting ice, says Walt Meier, a senior NSIDC research scientist, who was not involved in the study. The findings may even 55 future NSIDC models. “It's a really nice data set,” Meier says."And certainly one we’ll take consideration.

第三节 读后续写(共1小题,满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Many years ago there lived in Holland a boy named Peter. Peter's father was one of the men who tended the gates in the dikes(堤坝),called sluices. He opened and closed the sluices so that ships could pass out of Holland's canals into the great sea.
One afternoon in the early fall, when Peter was eight years old, his mother called him from his play. “Come, Peter,” she said. “I want you to go across the dike and take these cakes to your friend, the blind man. Remember that you shall be home before dark.”The little boy was glad to go on such an errand (跑腿), and started off with a light heart. He stayed with the poor blind man a little while to tell him something about his walk along the dike-the sun, the flowers and the ships far out at sea. Then he remembered his mother's wish that he should return before dark. Bidding his friend goodbye, he set out for home.
As he walked beside the canal, he noticed how the rains had swollen the water, and how they beat against the side of the dike, and he thought of his father's gates. “I am glad they are so strong,” he said to himself.“If the dike gave way what should we do? These pretty fields would be covered with water.” As he walked along the dike he sometimes stopped to pick the pretty blue flowers that grew beside the road, or to listen to the rabbits' soft tread as they rustled through the grass.
Suddenly he heard a noise. It was the sound of trickling water! He stopped and looked down. There was a small hole in the dike, through which a tiny stream was flowing. Any child in Holland is frightened at the thought of a leak in the dike. Peter understood the danger at once. If the water ran through a little hole it would soon make a larger one, and the whole country would be flooded. In a moment he saw what he must do. Throwing away his flowers, he climbed down the side of the dike and thrust his finger into the tiny hole. The flowing of the water was stopped! “Oh!” he said to himself. “I can keep the water back with my finger. Holland shall not be drowned while I am here. ”
This was all very well at first, but soon it grew dark and cold. The little fellow shouted and screamed. “Come here; come here,” he called. But no one heard him; no one came to help him.
