C South Baltimore is often thought of as a place to avoid—folks are taught to be careful of it. There was a mass shooting this past July, and another in early September. “People think Curtis Bay is a dangerous place. It’s not. It’s just we’re surrounded by dangerous things,” says Taysia Thompson, 17. Taysia, is one of the Free Your Voice members, a group of student activists fighting against a very different kind of danger in their neighborhood: air pollution and climate change. Now, the focus of their movement is the mountains of coal. Coal releases a fine, black dust small enough to get into people’s lungs. It makes respiratory (呼吸的) diseases worse, or can even cause disease and premature death. And there are the greenhouse gas emissions after the coal is burned. The teens of Free Your Voice are taking on a big opponent: the massive goods transportation company CSX, which transported more than 8 million tons of coal through South Baltimore in 2021. The goal is to eventually get the state regulators to deny the permit that CSX needs to operate, or at least require the company to enclose all the coal, or at the very least put water onto all of it so there’s less dust blowing around. This past summer, Taysia and three other students spent their time gathering evidence to try and get the coal pollution out of their neighborhood. They used sticky paper to gather samples of dust from all over the neighborhood to prove that the dust is from coal. They are also sending dust samples to a scientist in California, who uses an electron microscope to compare the dust that’s in this neighborhood to samples from the piles of coal at the terminal in South Baltimore to see if it matches. The students now have support from their community But the responses from officials have not been very satisfying. “Everyone is just breathing the air. And we will keep fighting.” says Taysia. 28. Why do the teens of Free Your Voice take CSX as an opponent? A. To cure lung diseases. B. To tackle air pollution. C. To resist mass shootings. D. To cut premature death rate. 29. What do the teens of Free Your Voice hope to achieve? A. Scientists will examine the dust samples. B. Officials will refuse CSX the operation permit. C. State regulators will keep fighting against pollution. D. Locals in Curtis Bay will clear the mountains of coal away. 30. What can be inferred about the teens’ fight? A. It isn’t all plain sailing. B. It will definitely end in victory. C. The teens lack solid evidence. D. The teens work on it all by themselves. 31. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Tourists Avoiding Dangerous South Baltimore B. Teens Gaining Support in Environmental Protection C. Student Activists Pushing back against Big Polluter D. 17-year-old Girl Combating Coal Pollution in Neighborhood D A satellite is an object in space that orbits around another. It has two kinds — natural satellites and artificial satellites. The moon is a natural satellite that moves around the earth while artificial satellites are those made by man. Despite their widespread impact on daily life, artificial satellites mainly depend on different complicated makeups. On the outside, they may look like a wheel, equipped with solar panels or sails. Inside, the satellites contain mission-specific scientific instruments, which include whatever tools the satellites need to perform their work. Among them, high-resolution cameras and communication electronics are typical ones. Besides, the part that carries the load and holds all the parts together is called the bus. Artificial satellites operate in a systematic way just like humans. Computers function as the satellite’s brain, which receive information, interpret it, and send messages back to the earth. Advanced digital cameras serve as the satellite’s eyes. Sensors are other important parts that not only recognize light, heat, and gases, but also record changes in what is being observed. Radios on the satellite send information back to the earth. Solar panels provide electrical power for the computers and other equipment, as well as the power to move the satellite forward. Artificial satellites use gravity to stay in their orbits. Earth’s gravity pulls everything toward the center of the planet. To stay in the earth’s orbit, the speed of a satellite must adjust to the tiniest changes in the pull of gravity. The satellite’s speed works against earth’s gravity just enough so that it doesn’t go speeding into space or falling back to the earth. Rockets carry satellites to different types and heights of orbits, based on the tasks they need to perform. Satellites closer to the earth are in low-earth orbit, which can be 200-500 miles high. The closer to the earth, the stronger the gravity is. Therefore, these satellites must travel at about 17,000 miles per hour to keep from falling back to the earth, while higher-orbiting satellites can travel more slowly. 32. What is Paragraph 2 of the text mainly about? A. The appearance of artificial satellites. B. The components of artificial satellites. C. The basic function of artificial satellites. D. The specific mission of artificial satellites. 33. What is the role of computers in artificial satellites? A. Providing electrical power. B. Recording changes observed. C. Monitoring space environment. D. Processing information received. 34. How do artificial satellites stay in their orbits? A. By relying on powerful rockets to get out of gravity. B. By orbiting at a fixed speed regardless of gravity’s pull. C. By changing speed constantly based on the pull of gravity. D. By resisting the pull of gravity with advanced technologies. 35. Why do satellites in higher-earth orbit travel more slowly? A. They are more affected by earth’s gravity. B. They take advantage of rockets more effectively. C. They have weaker pull of gravity in higher orbits. D. They are equipped with more advanced instruments. How to Choose Extracurricular Activities From sports to clubs to outside organizations, there are many activities to take part in outside the classroom. ____36____ Fortunately, it becomes quite easy once you figure out what you enjoy doing in general. In my head, I could hear the words my father kept telling me, “Do it, Stephanie. You never do anything for yourself. Just set it up.” I felt my lungs filled with air and released it. “Did you sign up?” my father asked. When he saw the drumsticks in my hand, he smiled and then came to hug me. Wednesday came, and along with it was my first drum lesson. I walked through the door and headed directly to the seating area in the back. My hands kept fidgeting (摆弄) with the sticks. I kept nervously looking at the time. I tried to slow down my breath. I knew the teacher would say I was not the right type of person to play the drums. I turned around to see an old man looking at me. “Stephanie? I’m Mike, the drum teacher,” he said. He led me to a room. There were two drum sets, and he told me to sit at the one close to the door. Out of the door gathered the crowd, chatting and chuckling. People made me nervous. That’s the way I’d always been. But Mike had a very calm manner, so I relaxed just slightly. Not only did he not tell me that I was the wrong type of person to play the drums, but he praised me on how well I held the sticks and followed along with him. I learned how to read simple sheets of music, but then my thirty- minute lesson was over. Walking back to my father’s car, I felt the energy beaming from within me. It was the first time that I had done something purely for my enjoyment, something just for myself. I practiced as much as I could throughout the week. Even my four-year-old dog Pluto often complained that I never played with it. My second lesson came, and I played the sheets of music for Mike. I noticed as I played that Mike’s concentration became more and more apparent. When I finished the whole lesson, Mike said “You played that perfectly!” Paragraph 1: After months of playing, one day, Mike invited me to play at a small concert. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: Walking up on the stage, I took a deep breath and sat at the drum set. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 阳江市黄冈学校2024-2025学年度高一上学期第2次月考 英语试题 本套试卷满分150分,考试时间120分钟。 Which animal does the man think is most special? October is the month of autumn and Halloween, so as you would expect, there are a few horror novels hitting bookstores soon. The first book is The Dark, which comes out on October 10th and there is only one week before that. It includes 13 short stories written by journalist Lee Ryan. What’s more, it is hoped that this book will be turned into a movie series. Next we have Stone Cold. This is the first novel by Japanese writer Ichiro Fujino that has been translated into English. It will be published on October 17th. His writing is really excellent and I can’t wait for more of his works to be translated. Lastly, we have them all from American writer John Clarke. It tells about a newly opened library in Australia where people start going missing. I don’t want to say any more or I’ll ruin the surprise. You can learn more about these books on our show’s website. That’s all from me. The students now have support from their community. But the responses from officials have not been very satisfying. 17-year-old Girl Combating Coal Pollution in Neighborhood 【答案】28. B 29. B 30. A 31. 根据文章第三段“Taysia, is one of the Free Your Voice members, a group of student activists fighting against a very different kind of danger in their neighborhood: air pollution and climate change. Now, the focus of their movement is the mountains of coal. Coal releases a fine, black dust small enough to get into people’s lungs. It makes respiratory (呼吸的) diseases worse, or can even cause disease and premature death. And there are the greenhouse gas emissions after the coal is burned. (Taysia是Free Your Voice的成员之一,这是一群学生活动家,他们与社区中一种截然不同的危险作斗争:空气污染和气候变化。现在,他们运动的焦点是堆积如山的煤炭。煤会释放出细小的黑色尘埃,小到足以进入人们的肺部。它使呼吸系统疾病恶化,甚至可能导致疾病和过早死亡。还有煤炭燃烧后的温室气体排放。)”以及第四段中“The teens of Free Your Voice are taking on a big opponent: the massive goods transportation company CSX, which transported more than 8 million tons of coal through South Baltimore in 2021. (Free Your Voice 的青少年们正在面对一个巨大的对手:大型货物运输公司CSX,该公司在2021年通过南巴尔的摩运输了超过800万吨煤炭。)”可知,Free Your Voice的青少年将CSX作为对手是为了解决空气污染问题,故选B项。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第四段中“The goal is to eventually get the state regulators to deny the permit that CSX needs to operate, or at least require the company to enclose all the coal, or at the very least put water onto all of it so there’s less dust blowing around. (目标是最终让州监管机构拒绝CSX运营所需的许可证,或者至少要求公司封闭所有煤炭,或者至少将水浇灌到所有煤炭上,以减少灰尘的吹动。)”可知,Free Your Voice的青少年希望实现的目标是让官方拒绝CSX的运营许可,故选B项。 【30题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中“The students now have support from their community. But the responses from officials have not been very satisfying. (学生们现在得到了社区的支持。但官员们的回应并不是很令人满意。)”可知,官员并不支持,能推断出他们的抗争并非一帆风顺,故选A项。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。根据文章第二段中“Taysia, is one of the Free Your Voice members, a group of student activists fighting against a very different kind of danger in their neighborhood: air pollution and climate change. (Taysia 是 Free Your Voice 的成员之一,这是一群学生活动家,他们与社区中一种截然不同的危险作斗争:空气污染和气候变化)” 可知,由学生活动人士组成的组织Free Your Voice,致力于改善巴尔的摩当地由煤炭带来的空气污染,尤其是运输煤炭的污染大户——大型货物运输公司CSX。由此可知,C项“学生积极分子反对污染大户”最适合作本文的标题,故选C项。 D A satellite is an object in space that orbits around another. B 33. D 34. C 35. 根据文章第二段“On the outside, they may look like a wheel, equipped with solar panels or sails. Inside, the satellites contain mission-specific scientific instruments, which include whatever tools the satellites need to perform their work.(在外面,它们可能看起来像一个轮子,配备了太阳能电池板或帆。卫星内部装有特定任务的科学仪器,其中包括卫星执行工作所需的任何工具)”可知,文章第二段主要讲的是人造卫星的组成部分。故选B项。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Computers function as the satellite’s brain, which receive information, interpret it, and send messages back to the earth.(计算机就像卫星的大脑一样,接收信息,解释信息,并将信息发回地球)”可知,计算机在人造卫星中的作用是处理接收到的信息。 根据文章倒数第二段“Artificial satellites use gravity to stay in their orbits. Earth’s gravity pulls everything toward the center of the planet. To stay in the earth’s orbit, the speed of a satellite must adjust to the tiniest changes in the pull of gravity.(人造卫星利用重力保持在轨道上。地球的引力把所有东西都拉向地球的中心。为了保持在地球轨道上运行,卫星的速度必须根据引力最微小的变化进行调整)”可知,人造卫星是通过在重力的作用下不断改变速度保持在轨道上的。故选C项。 35题详解】 细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“The closer to the earth, the stronger the gravity is. Therefore, these satellites must travel at about 17,000 miles per hour to keep from falling back to the earth, while higher-orbiting satellites can travel more slowly.(离地球越近,引力就越强。因此,这些卫星必须以每小时17000英里的速度运行,以防止落回地球,而轨道较高的卫星运行速度更慢)”可知,高地球轨道上的卫星运行速度较慢是因为它们在高轨道上的引力较弱。故选C项。 第二节 (共5小题,每小题2.5分,共12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Choose Extracurricular Activities From sports to clubs to outside organizations, there are many activities to take part in outside the classroom. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 After months of playing, one day, Mike invited me to play at a small concert. Practicing drumming became an essential part of my daily routine. The hours spent honing my skills were not just about mastering the instrument; they’re about discipline and love. My father, watching with a gentle smile, often stood by the door. His words of encouragement soothed my anxiety. With each nod of his head and every proud grin, my determination skyrocketed. Finally, the big day came. Walking up on the stage, I took a deep breath and sat at the drum set. Lights flashing, I began to play. My hands moved swiftly, striking the drumheads with precision and power, each hits ending vibrations through the air that seemed to capture the audience’s hearts. The rhythm intensified, building like a storm, and the crowd watched in awe, their eyes glued to my every move. As the final beat hit, the air was filled with an electrifying energy, and the yard erupted in applause. Their applause was recognition to the power of music and me. “Stephanie, yes, you can do anything that you like!” I grinned with delight, drumsticks in my hands. 词汇激活 行为类 ①爆发:erupt in/burst into ②充满:be filled with /be full of ③捕捉:capture/catch 情绪类 ①爱:love/affection ②高兴:delight/joy 【点睛】[高分句型1] Practicing drumming became an essential part of my daily routine.
