I like writing. I like meeting people. I couldn't keep a secret if you told me and I like discovering new things and telling everyone about them. So I became a journalist (记者) .
Sounds simple and easy, right? But the life of a journalist is more exciting and much harder than that. It can come with pain and frustration (挫折) .
Once I ran around in a dark, dangerous- looking street in the snow. I was trying to find a woman who ( my editor had told me) " woke in the night to find water pouring on her head". Somehow I found her. I took photos. I interviewed her, the building owner and the firemen. I wrote the story. Then I opened the paper to find it at the back, with no name on it, only 100 words long. Strangely, however, it made me want to keep going. If you succeed, the rewards of journalism are truly great.
I once wrote about an old people's home. People there, including a 90- year- old blind man, were living in rooms that were full of fleas (跳蚤) . They were told to do their own repairs. A week after the story was published, people there phoned me, full of joy. The managers had said sorry to them and promised to change their ways.
Journalism can be dangerous and boring, with long and changing work hours. And the pay( at least in the UK) is terrible. But it's also one of the most exciting, rewarding jobs. For me, there is no better career than making a difference— and telling the world about it.

C. A journalist works long hours.
D. It's necessary for a journalist to care more about the poor.
( ) 4.What can we learn from the article?

C. The writer loves her job as a journalist. D. The writer encourages people to work in journalism.
When considering the kind of experience that makes life better, most people first think that happiness depends on experiencing pleasure: good food, good jobs, all the comforts that money can buy. If we couldn't have these, we might as well sit in front of the television on a quiet evening.
Pleasure is an important part of the quality of life, but by itself it doesn't bring happiness. When people think further about what makes a worthy life, they tend (倾向于) to move beyond pleasant memories and begin to remember other events, other experiences that overlap (有重叠) pleasurable ones but fall into a group with a separate name: enjoyment. Enjoyable events take place when people have not only satisfied a need or met some earlier expectation, but also achieved something unexpected.
Enjoyment is characterized by a sense of curiosity, of achievement. Playing a tennis game that improves one's ability is enjoyable, as is reading a book that shows things in a new light, as is having a conversation that leads us to express ideas we didn't know we had. None of these experiences may be especially pleasurable when they are taking place, but when we think back on them afterwards, we would say, " That really was fun" and wish they would happen again. After an enjoyable event we know that we have changed, and grown.
Experiences that give pleasure can also give enjoyment, but the two feelings are quite different. For example, everybody takes pleasure in eating. However, to enjoy food is more difficult- you have to pay enough attention to a meal, So as to sense and tell its various tastes. As this example suggests, we can experience pleasure without any psychic energy, while enjoyment happens only as a result of full attention. A person can feel pleasure without any effort, as long as certain parts in his brain are stimulated (刺激) . But it's impossible to enjoy a tennis game or a book without full attention. It's for this reason that pleasure does not last long, nor does it make us grow. Growth requires full attention to goals that are new, that are relatively challenging.
Without enjoyment, life will go on, and it can even be pleasant. But it depends heavily on luck and the external (外部的) environment. To achieve personal control over the quality of experience, however, we need to learn how to build enjoyment into what happens day in, day out.
( ) 1.You will most probably experience enjoyment when you .

C. talk with friends for new ideas D. sit quietly in front of a television
( ) 2.What do you know about pleasure and enjoyment from the passage?

C. a worthy life depends on luck and environment
D. pleasure is the key to a happy and worthy life
" How was your weekend?" " Did you see the game on TV last night?" " Isn't the weather beautiful today?" These questions and the answers to them are examples of " small talk" — the short, friendly conversations that people have with friends and parents.
Some people avoid making small talk at work. They think they shouldn't talk about things that aren't important for the job, or their partners will think they aren't serious about their work. And some people just don't enjoy making small talk about themselves.
But small talk is important! Knowing how to make small talk is a skill that can help you a lot. By making small talk, you show that you' re friendly and interested in your partners. You become a better team member. If you don't make small talk, others might feel uncomfortable around you and think you' re unfriendly. Peter Harper, a manager at the Apex Company in the USA, says, " We always look for friendly workers who know how to communicate with each other and with our customers (顾客) ."
Here are some tips for successful small talk. You can talk about safe topic such as the weather, sports, hobbies, TV programs and famous people like movie stars, singers, etc. You can also share some information about your family such as birthday parties and other family events, but don't share very personal information like family problems. You can talk about the news too, but avoid topic on money, age, weight and so on.
Listening is an important part of small talk. Listen carefully to what the other person is saying and ask questions. Don't just talk about yourself. And remember to smile! Making small talk takes practice. The more you do it, the better you' ll be at making small talk!

Rules can make a big difference to our society. As for me, there are many rules in my family. Let me tell you two of them.
One is that I’m supposed to go back home before 9 p.m. and go to bed before 10 p.m. As the saying goes, “Early to bed and early to rise can make a man healthy, wealthy and wise.” The other rule is that I’m not allowed to talk while I’m eating because it’s impolite. Because of these rules, I have developed good habits and have had a healthy and strong body.
In the future, I will stick to good rules and get rid of bad habits. I’m sure I’ll become a better person to care for my parents in the way they love me.
