Today $8 or $10 seems a small amount of money, but at that time these amounts were forbidding to most citizens. Accordingly, newspapers were read almost only by rich people in politics or the trades. In addition, most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to a mass audience. They were dull and visually forbidding. But the revolution that was taking place in the 1830s would change all that. The trend, then, was toward the “penny paper”—a term referring to papers made widely available to the public. It meant any inexpensive newspaper; perhaps more importantly it meant newspapers that could be bought in single copies on the street. This development did not take place overnight. It had been possible(but not easy) to buy single copies of newspapers before 1830, but this usually meant the reader had to go down to the printer’s office to purchase a copy. Street sales were almost unknown. However, within a few years, street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in eastern cities. At first the price of single copies was seldom a penny—usually two or three cents was charged—and some of the older well-known papers charged five or six cents. But the phrase “penny paper” caught the public’s fancy, and soon there would be papers that did indeed sell for only a penny. This new trend of newspapers for “the man on the street” did not begin well. Some of the early ventures(企业) were immediate failures. Publishers already in business, people who were owners of successful papers, had little desire to change the tradition. It took a few youthful and daring businessmen to get the ball rolling. 4. Which of the following best describes newspapers in America before the 1830s? A. Academic. B. Unattractive. C. Inexpensive. D. Confidential. 5. What did street sales mean to newspapers? A. They would be priced higher. B. They would disappear from cities. C. They could have more readers. D. They could regain public trust. 6. Who were the newspapers of the new trend targeted at? A. Local politicians. B. Common people. C. Young publishers. D. Rich businessmen. 7. What can we say about the birth of the penny paper? A. It was a difficult process. B. It was a temporary success. C. It was a robbery of the poor. D. It was a disaster for printers. B 5. C 6. B 7. In addition, most newspapers had little in them that would appeal to a mass audience. They were dull and visually forbidding. 根据第二段提到“便士报纸”针对大众,很便宜,更重要的是,在街上可以买的到报纸;再结合第三段中间的within a few years, street sales of newspapers would be commonplace in eastern cities. The trend, then, was toward the “penny paper”—a term referring to papers made widely available to the public. The new trend of newspapers for ‘the man on the street’ did not begin well. Some of the early ventures were immediately failures. Publishers already in business, people who owners of successful papers, had little desires to change the tradition. It took a few youthful and daring businessmen to get the ball rolling. A。 C The elderly residents (居民) in care homes in London are being given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely The project was dreamed up by a local charity (慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people’s wellbeing. It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Staff in care homes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use. Among those taking part in the project is 80-year-old Ruth Xavier. She said: “I used to keep hens when I was younger and had to prepare their breakfast each morning before I went to school. ” “I like the project a lot. I am down there in my wheelchair in the morning letting the hens out and down there again at night to see they’ve gone to bed.” “It’s good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I’m enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful.” There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide. Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said: “Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here.” Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said: “We are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and creative activities.” 8. What is the purpose of the project? A. To ensure harmony in care homes. B. To provide part-time jobs for the aged. C. To raise money for medical research. D. To promote the elderly people’s welfare. 9 How has the project affected Ruth Xavier? A. She has learned new life skills. B. She has gained a sense of achievement. C. She has recovered her memory. D. She has developed a strong personality. 10. What do the underlined words “embark on” mean in paragraph 7? A. Improve. B. Oppose. C. Begin. D. Evaluate. 11. What can we learn about the project from the last two paragraphs? A. It is well received. B. It needs to be more creative. C. It is highly profitable. D. It takes ages to see the results. D 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第二段“The project was dreamed up by a local charity (慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people’s wellbeing (该项目由当地一家慈善机构构想,旨在减少孤独,改善老年人的健康状况。)” 根据第五段““It’s good to have a different focus. People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them. I’m enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful.” (有不同的关注点很好。人们把自己的孩子带进来看母鸡,居民们也来外面坐着看它们。我喜欢创造性的活动,做一些有用的事情的感觉很好。)”可知,Ruth Xavier很享受做这些事,她觉得自己在做有用的事,这能够给她来良好的感觉,因此可知通过该项目她获得了一种成就感。故选B项。 【10题详解】 词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段“Wendy Wilson, extra care manager at 60 Penfold Street, one of the first to embark on the project, said: “Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here.” (彭福街60号的额外护理经理Wendy Wilson是第一批参与该项目的人之一,她说:“居民们非常欢迎该项目的想法和创意会议。我们期待这个项目能给这里的人们带来好处和乐趣。”)”可知,Wendy Wilson是着手这项工程的人之一,也是做这个项目的创始人之一,因此可知,画线处embark on意为“开始着手做某事”,与C项“Begin (开始)”含义相近。故选C项。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Residents really welcome the idea of the project and the creative sessions. We are looking forward to the benefits and fun the project can bring to people here. (居民们非常欢迎该项目的想法和创意会议。我们期待这个项目能给这里的人们带来好处和乐趣。)”以及最后一段“Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said: “We are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and creative activities.” (“诺丁山路径”的负责人林恩·刘易斯说:“我们很高兴能参与这个项目。它将通过共同的兴趣和创造性活动真正帮助我们的居民联系起来。”)”可知,该项目得到了居民们的认可,大家很欢迎这个项目,而且这个项目将会带来一些好处,因此可知这个项目的反响很好,很受欢迎。故选A项。 D Monkeys seem to have a way with numbers. A team of researchers trained three Rhesus monkeys to associate 26 clearly different symbols consisting of numbers and selective letters with 0-25 drops of water or juice as a reward. The researchers then tested how the monkeys combined—or added—the symbols to get the reward. Here’s how Harvard Medical School scientist Margaret Livingstone, who led the team, described the experiment: In their cages the monkeys were provided with touch screens. On one part of the screen, a symbol would appear, and on the other side two symbols inside a circle were shown. For example, the number 7 would flash on one side of the screen and the other end would have 9 and 8. If the monkeys touched the left side of the screen they would be rewarded with seven drops of water or juice; if they went for the circle, they would be rewarded with the sum of the numbers—17 in this example. After running hundreds of tests, the researchers noted that the monkeys would go for the higher values more than half the time, indicating that they were performing a calculation, not just memorizing the value of each combination. When the team examined the results of the experiment more closely, they noticed that the monkeys tended to underestimate(低估) a sum compared with a single symbol when the two were close in value—sometimes choosing, for example, a 13 over the sum of 8 and 6. The underestimation was systematic: When adding two numbers, the monkeys always paid attention to the larger of the two, and then added only a fraction(小部分) of the smaller number to it. “This indicates that there is a certain way quantity is represented in their brains, ”Dr. Livingstone says. “But in this experiment what they’re doing is paying more attention to the big number than the little one.” 12. What did the researchers do to the monkeys before testing them? A. They fed them. B. They named them. C. They trained them. D. They measured them. 13. How did the monkeys get their reward in the experiment? A. By drawing a circle. B. By touching a screen. C. By watching videos. D. By mixing two drinks. 14. What did Livingstone’s team find about the monkeys? A. They could perform basic addition. B. They could understand simple words. C. They could memorize numbers easily. D. They could hold their attention for long. 15. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear? A. Entertainment. B. Health. C. Education. D. Science. C 13. B 14. A 15. A team of researchers trained three Rhesus monkeys to associate 26 clearly different symbols consisting of numbers and selective letters with 0-25 drops of water or juice as a reward. In their cages the monkeys were provided with touch screens. 根据第四段“the researchers noted that the monkeys would go for the higher values more than half the time, indicating that they were performing a calculation, not just memorizing the value of each combination.和第五段中的When adding two numbers, the monkeys always paid attention to the larger of the two, and then added only a fraction(小部分) of the smaller number to it. English family names or surnames as we know today weren’t widely used until the Norman conquest (征服)of 1066. Before that time there weren’t enough people to make it necessary to use anything other than a single name. ____16____people began adding descriptions such as “John the Baker” to tell between people of the same name. These descriptive names eventually became associated with a family, passed down from one generation to the next. Occupational(职业性的)Surnames. ____17____ Two common English surname, Smith and Wright, are excellent examples of this. A name ending in “-man” usually suggests a trade name, as in Chapman (shopkeeper). Descriptive Surnames. Based on a unique quality or physical characteristic of the individual, descriptive surnames often developed from nicknames. Most refer to an individual’s appearance, like size, color or physical shape, for example, Little or Armstrong. ____18____ Goodchild or Wise are good examples of this. Geographical Surnames. These are names coming from the location of the land in which the first bearer and his family lived, and are generally the most common origin of English surnames. They were first introduced into England by the Normans, many of whom were known by the name of their personal lands. ____19____ County names in Great Britain, such as Kent and Devon, have been commonly adopted as surnames. Other local surnames are from descriptive landscape features such as hills and woods which describe the land where the bearer lives. ____20____ A. As the country’s population grew, B. As a person entered under one surname, C. A rare name can tell you the family’s origin. D. This is the origin of surnames such as Hill and Bush. E. They may also refer to an individual’s personal character. F. Many English surnames developed from a person’s job or trade. G. Thus, many English surnames developed from the name of an actual town or county. 【答案】16. A 17. F 18. E 19. G 20. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了英国姓氏的由来,我们今天所知道的英国姓氏直到1066年诺曼征服才被广泛使用。 【16题详解】 根据空前“Before that time there weren’t enough people to make it necessary to use anything other than a single name.(在那之前,没有足够多的人需要使用单一的名字以外的任何东西。)”可知,在诺曼征服之前人口不多。再根据空后“people began adding descriptions such as “John the Baker” to tell between people of the same name. (人们开始添加诸如“面包师约翰”这样的描述来区分同名的人。)”可知,人们开始添加一些描述来区分同名的人。选项A“As the country’s population grew,(随着国家人口的增长,)”不仅从形式上符合下文,从内容上也承上启下,使得上下文符合逻辑。正因为人口增加,人们才开始添加描述来区分同名的人。故选A。 【17题详解】 根据段首“Occupational(职业性)Surnames.(职业性的姓氏)”可知,本段主要讲述的是姓氏和职业相关。选项F“Many English surnames developed from a person’s job or trade.(许多英语姓氏是由一个人的工作或贸易发展而来的。)”和本段内容相符。同时与下文所举例子“Two common English surname, Smith and Wright, are excellent examples of this. (两个常见的英国姓氏,史密斯和赖特,就是很好的例子。)”保持一致。故选F。 【18题详解】 根据上文“Most refer to an individual’s appearance, like size, color or physical shape, for example, Little or Armstrong.(大多数是指一个人的外表,如大小、颜色或身体形状,例如,Little或 Armstrong。)”可知,本段主要讲述的是有些姓氏用来描述一个人。再根据空后“Goodchild or Wise are good examples of this.( Goodchild或Wise就是很好的例子。)”可知,Goodchild或Wise是描述了一个人的性格。选项E“They may also refer to an individual’s personal character.(它们也可以指一个人的性格。)”是下文内容的总结,符合本段内容。故选E。 【19题详解】 根据下文“County names in Great Britain, such as Kent and Devon, have been commonly adopted as surnames.(英国的郡名,如肯特郡和德文郡,已被普遍采纳为姓氏。)”可知,一些地名已经成为了姓氏。选项G“Thus, many English surnames developed from the name of an actual town or county.(因此,许多英文姓氏是从一个实际的城镇或郡的名字发展而来的。)”与下文所举例子相一致,指的都是一些城镇或郡的名字已经成为了正式的姓氏。故选G。 【20题详解】 根据空前“Other local surnames are from descriptive landscape features such as hills and woods which describe the land where the bearer lives.(其他当地姓氏来自描述性的景观特征,如山丘和森林,描述了持有者居住的土地。)”可知,有些景观特征也成为了姓氏。选项D“This is the origin of surnames such as Hill and Bush.(这是Hill和Bush等姓氏的起源。)”与上文内容一致,是上文所指的景观特征的具体例子。故选D。 第三部分 语言知识运用(共三节,满分55分) 第一节 完形填空 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项并在答题纸上将该项涂黑。 Recently my wife and I were faced with a difficult situation while traveling by car with our hired(雇佣的) driver. Unfortunately, on the way an unpleasant subject came up and they started to quarrel.(七月的一个周末,简和她的丈夫汤姆驱车三个小时,在森林里的一个湖边露营过夜。不幸的是,在路上,一个不愉快的话题出现了,他们开始吵架)”可知,简和丈夫汤姆在去湖边露营的路上吵架,空处应用动词quarrel,文段描述过去的一般情况,使用一般过去时,动词使用过去式形式。故填quarreled。 ②根据第一段“By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I’m going to find a better spot for us to camp” and walked away.(当他们到达湖边时,简非常生气,她对汤姆说:“我要找个更好的地方露营”,然后走开了)”可知,简感觉生气,所以一时冲动,走开去找一个更好的露营地,空处应用名词anger的形容词形式angry,作表语。故填angry。 ③根据第二段“After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom.(没有回复。要是她没有把手机忘在汤姆的那个包里就好了)”可知,简没有带手机,无法联系到汤姆,处于困境中,简会感觉绝望,空处应用形容词desperate,作表语。故填desperate。 ⑤根据第四段“Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family.(简在黑暗中醒着躺着,非常想和汤姆和她的家人在一起)”可知,简一个人在黑暗中醒着躺着,空处应用形容词awake。故填awake。 ⑥根据第四段“Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She could hear water trickling (滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better.(简在黎明时分起来,又饿又渴。她能听到远处某处有滴水声。她很快跟着声音来到一条小溪边。令她非常高兴的是,她还看到了一些浆果丛。她喝了几杯,吃了几颗浆果。她一生中从未尝过比这更好的东西)”可知,找到小溪后,简解决了饿和渴的问题,空处与thirst并列,作of的宾语,应用hungry的名词形式hunger。故填hunger。 ⑧根据第五段“She drank and ate a few berries. Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above.(当简小心翼翼地沿着小溪走时,她听到了直升机的声音。那是给我的吗?不幸的是,树木使人们无法从上面看到她)”可知,树木的存在挡住了简,使得直升机无法看到简,空处应用动词cover,文段描述过去的一般情况,使用一般过去时,动词使用过去式形式。故填covered。 ⑩根据最后一段“Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.(简脱下黄色上衣,心想如果他们再回来,她应该去一个开阔的地方给他们发出信号)”以及语境可知,简迷路被困,直升机成为了简的希望之光,所以空处应用名词light。 根据第一段“By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I’m going to find a better spot for us to camp” and walked away.(当他们到达湖边时,简非常生气,她对汤姆说:“我要找个更好的地方露营”,然后走开了)”以及第二段“With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snow-capped mountain top. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead. Jane took off her yellow blouse, thinking that she should go to an open area and flag them if they came back again.(当简小心翼翼地沿着小溪走时,她听到了直升机的声音。那是给我的吗?不幸的是,树木使人们无法从上面看到她。几分钟后,另一架直升机飞过头顶。简脱下黄色上衣,心想如果他们再回来,她应该去一个开阔的地方给他们发出信号)”可知,如果直升机返回,简可能会像她计划的那样,脱下黄色上衣,从开阔地带向直升机发出信号,最终得救。故答案为Jane would be saved eventually by signaling to a helicopter from an open area if it returned, as she planned by removing her yellow blouse. 根据第一段“By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I’m going to find a better spot for us to camp” and walked away.(当他们到达湖边时,简非常生气,她对汤姆说:“我要找个更好的地方露营”,然后走开了)”以及第二段“With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snow-capped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost.(没有路可走,简只是走了很长一段时间。爬到高处后,她转过身来,希望能看到湖。令她惊讶的是,她只看到了森林,远远地,一座白雪皑皑的山顶。她突然意识到自己迷路了)”可知,由于没能在与丈夫汤姆的分歧中保持冷静,简没有做任何准备就离开,导致迷路,由此可推知,从这次经历中,简可能会学到在分歧中保持冷静的重要性,以及在陌生环境中做好准备和谨慎的必要性。故答案为Jane might learn the importance of staying calm during disagreements and the necessity of being prepared and cautious in unfamiliar environments. Dear Sir or Madam, I'm a student from China. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours sincerely, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Sir or Madam, I'm a student from China. C The elderly residents (居民) in care homes in London are being given hens to look after to stop them feeling lonely. The project was dreamed up by a local charity (慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people’s wellbeing. I’m enjoying the creative activities and it feels great to have done something useful.” There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it out countrywide. 9. How has the project affected Ruth Xavier? D Monkeys seem to have a way with numbers. B. Health. C. Education. D. Science. English family names or surnames as we know today weren’t widely used until the Norman conquest (征服)of 1066. By the time they reached the lake, Jane was so angry that she said to Tom, “I’m going to find a better spot for us to camp” and walked away. With no path to follow, Jane just walked on for quite a long time. After she had climbed to a high place, she turned around, hoping to see the lake. To her surprise, she saw nothing but forest and, far beyond, a snow-capped mountain top. She suddenly realized that she was lost. “Tom!” she cried. “Help!” No reply. If only she had not left her mobile phone in that bag with Tom. Jane kept moving, but the farther she walked, the more confused she became. As night was beginning to fall, Jane was so tired that she had to stop for the night. Lying awake in the dark, Jane wanted very much to be with Tom and her family. She wanted to hold him and tell him how much she loved him. Jane rose at the break of day, hungry and thirsty. She could hear water trickling (滴落) somewhere at a distance. Quickly she followed the sound to a stream. To her great joy, she also saw some berry bushes. She drank and ate a few berries. Never in her life had she tasted anything better. Feeling stronger now, Jane began to walk along the stream and hope it would lead her to the lake. As she picked her way carefully along the stream, Jane heard a helicopter. Is that for me? Unfortunately, the trees made it impossible for people to see her from above. A few minutes later, another helicopter flew overhead.
