Then my dad died when I was 2, and I got even more stuff as my mom, friends, and family gave me more and more stuff to try to make me feel better. My mom continued to treat me to whatever I wanted until I was seven and my world crashed.   That was when the real estate (房地产) market crashed. My mom had thought buying houses was a good idea as a way to invest her money to take care of us. After the crash, I went from the kid who got a fine iPod,and who had the coolest house, to almost having nowhere to stay.   Since then, when I would ask for a new toy or bike, or even to see a movie my mom would say “I’m sorry honey but we really can’t afford that right now ” But my mom had grown up in a family where money was never a problem, so this change was as big for her as it was for me. My constant requests for toys and video games deepened her concern about our financial situation. But I wasn’t used to hearing “no.” So, for a year or two, I kept asking for things whether I really needed them or not .   Then something happened that would change my way of thinking forever. My mom had been working really hard all year, just topay for the necessities, like our rents, and water and power bills. When she asked me what I wanted for my birthday I said that I wanted a new video gaming system. I didn’t know that it was expensive. All I knew was that my friends had them and that I wanted one, too. Paragraph 1:On my birthday, I started opening presents, believing that I would get what I asked for.                                                                                                                   Paragraph 2:From then on I wouldn’t ask for anything that I didn’t need. 1. I ripped the paper off each gift with eagerness, my heart pounding with anticipation. But as the last present was unwrapped, and there was no sign of the gaming system, my face fell. Tears welled up in my eyes as anger and disappointment surged within me. I turned to my mom, who was looking at me with a pained expression, her eyes filled with the weight of our situation. Paragraph 2: From then on I wouldn’t ask for anything that I didn’t need. I saw the sacrifices my mom made daily, working long hours just to keep a roof over our heads. I realized that my wants were insignificant compared to our survival. I became more aware of the value of things and the effort behind them. I started to cherish what we had, and every small gift or kind gesture became precious. 2 Paragraph 1: On my birthday, I started opening presents, believing that I would get what I asked for. Each present I opened with growing excitement, imagining the new video gaming system within one of them. But as I neared the end of the pile, disappointment began to set in. When the last present revealed something other than what I desired, I felt a sharp pang of sadness. I looked at my mom, and she explained once more how tight our finances were. Paragraph 2: From then on I wouldn’t ask for anything that I didn’t need. I remembered the tired look on my mom's face and how hard she worked. I started to think about the things we already had and how lucky we were. I understood that there were more important aspects of life than having the newest possessions. I learned to be grateful for the simple things and the love my mom provided. Paragraph 1:On my birthday, I started opening presents, believing that I would get what I asked for. As I opened the last gift box, I found nothing other than a pair of jeans My mom could tell how disappointed I was and she started crying. I hugged her harder than I had ever hugged anyone before (“我”由失望到理解母亲的情感转变). I realized how hard she was working and that she couldn’t afford to give me anything I didn’t need Paragraph 2:From then on I wouldn’t ask for anything that I didn’t need.I learned the difference between what I wanted and what I needed I learned to appreciate the toys or games I did have and took good care of them. when I wanted a new iPod (呼应伏笔), I had to work to buy it (以上描写“我”行为的转变). The feeling of having truly earned something was one of the best feelings in the world. I was also grateful to my mother, who had given me all she could give.
