Ask students to read the passage in 3a together,and call attention to the pronunciation and intonation.
Step II Presentation
Grammar Focus
First, ask students to go through the sentences in the box, and crcle the conjunctions, or what and how in these sentences.
Then, write objective clauses and exclamatory statements on the blackboard, and encourage students to discuss the use of them and make some sentences using those structures. After that, explain the use of by in details.
1.that引导的宾语从句
主句的谓语动词是say,think,tell,know,hear,see,feel,mean,hope,wish,remember,forget等时,或主句的谓语动词是由形容词afraid,glad,sure,sorry 等作表语的系表结构时,后面常接that引导的宾语从句。
He says that he wants to speak to the headmaster.
他说他想和校长说话。
I think that we need to buy some meat for the party.
我认为我们需要为聚会买些肉。
I'm sorry (that) he isn't here right now.
对不起,他现在不在。
that引导的宾语从句用来陈述事实,that本身无词义,在从句中不作任何成分,在口语中常常省略。
I guess somnebody else has borrowed it.
我猜是别人把它借走了。
I'm afraid you'll have to wait.
恐怕你得等一下。
注意:从句前面有插入语时,引导词that不能省略;如果有两个并列的宾语从句,第二个从句的引导词that也不能省略。
She may tell you,for example,that she is interested in Chinese.
例如,她可能会告诉你,她对汉语感兴趣。
Mr. Read said (that) he taught English in a middle school in Beijing and that he came from Aus-tralia.
里德先生说他在北京的一所中学教英语,他来自澳大利亚。
主句中的谓语动词是一般现在时,从句中谓语动词的时态不受限制,可根据具体情况选用适当的时态;主句中的谓语动词是一般过去时,从句中也必须要用某种过去时态,以保持时态的前后呼应。注意当宾语从句表示的是客观真理、科学原理、自然现象、名言时,则用一般现在时,不受主句时态的限制。试比较:
He says that he wants to see him as soon as possible.
他说他想尽快见到他。
He said that he wanted to see him as soon as possible.
他说他想尽快见到他。
He says that he is mending his bike.
他说他正在修他的自行车。
He said that he was mending his bike.
他说他正在修他的自行车。
The teacher told us that the earth goes round the sun.
老师告诉我们地球围绕太阳转。
2.if/whether引导的宾语从句
if和whether两者的含义区别很小,一般可通用。
I don't know whether/if they will come to help us.
但是,当whether与or not连成一个词组时,whether不可换用if。
I don't know whether or not they will come for our help.
若whether和or not不连在一起,在口语中可以用if取代whether,当然也可以用whether。
I don't care if/whether your car breaks down or not.
此外,还有三种情况值得注意:
(1)在介词后面只能用whether,不能用if。
I am not interested in whether you'l come or not.
(2)在动词不定式之前,只能用whether,不能用if。
He doesn't know whether to stay or not.
(3)在及物运动discuss后的宾语从句中,只能用whether,不能用if。
We discussed whether we should make a change in our plan.
3.What引导的感叹句
以What引导的感叹句,一般有三种形式,此时what为形容词,作定语,用来修饰它后面的名词或词组。
(1)What+a/an+形容词+可数名词单数+主语+谓语!
What a good girl she is!
她是一个多么好的女孩啊!
(2)What+形容词+不可数名词+主语+谓语!What bad weather it is!
多么糟糕的天气啊!
(3)What+形容词+可数名词复数+主语+谓语!
What good students they are!
他们是多么好的学生啊!
4.How引导的感叹句
How引导的感叹句也有三种结构形式。此时How是副词,用来修饰其后的形容词或副词,也可以修饰动词。
(1)How+形容词+主语+谓语!
How hot it is today!
今天多么热呀!
(2)How+副词+主语+谓语!
How fast he runs!
他跑得多么快呀!
(3))How+主语+谓语!
How time flies!
光阴似箭!
What与How有时也可以互换;What+a/an+形容词+可数名词单数+主语+谓语!=How+形容词+a/an+可数名词单数+主语+谓语!

Step III Practice
1.Teach activity 4a.
This activity aims to help students to consolidate the grammar.
First, lead students to have a look at the sample sentence to know what to do in this activity and how to do it.
Then, ask students to finish the work by them-selves.
Later, invite five students to read their sentences to check the answers.
Correct mistakes if any.

Objective clauses:
Do you know that there are two special days for parents in America?
I heard that it is becoming more and more popu-lar to celebrate Mother's Day and Father's Day in China.
I wonder if children over there also give similar gifts to their parents.
I believe that there are many ways to show our love.
After that, encourage students to write sen-tences about Mother's Day and Father's Day using objective clauses.
They can do it in pairs.
Step IV Consolidation
Teach activity 4c.
This activity is designed to help students to con-solidate the target language of talking about festivals in groups.
First, the class divide into groups of four.
Encourage each of the group members to talk about his or her favorite festival and take notes on a piece of paper.
Later, each group choose a group leader to report for the whole class.
Make a list of students' favorite festivals on the blackboard.
Step V Summary
In this period, students learned the use of objective clauses with that,if/whether, and exclamatory state-ments. Through the writing and speaking practice, they consolidated the grammar and the target language.
