Present some ID cards made by students,which were assigned as homework. 2.Ask students to say something to introduce the persons according to the information in the cards. Step 2 Pre-reading (5 minutes) 1.Show the photo boards to students. Lead students to learn about the pictures on the boards one by one. Present the new words: parrot, Singapore,tennis, guitar, the UK, Beijing roast duck. Lead students to learn and read the new words. Then hstudents to label the photos with the words in the box in la. 2.Cultural supplement. When talking about the pictures related to Singapore and the UK,draw students' attention to Merlion and the Big Ben, which are considered as the cultural icons of the two countries. 3. Have students discuss what can be considered the cultural icons of China, and what can be seen as the symbol of our province/city? Step 3 While-reading (25 minutes) 1.Fast reading. (5 minutes) (1)Lead students to the forum and the two posts in 1b. Explain the new word "post" and lead them to pay attention to the form of a post. (2)Assign the reading task: Match their posts with the photo boards. (3)Encourage students to discuss how they can finish the task as quickly as they can. Help them to conclude the reading skills-skimming. Circle the words related to the pictures above. One circle is enough to tell the result. (4)Check if they can accomplish the task by reading in 20 seconds. 2.Careful reading. (15 minutes) (1)Draw students' attention to the table in 1c and highlight the key information in a self-introduction for making new friends, such as name,age, country, hobby, favourite food, family, and pet. Explain the new words "information" and “hobby”. (2)Individual work. Ask students to scan the posts to complete the table by reading on their own. (3)Group work. Encourage students to discuss their answers andpuzzles within groups after reading. Offer to help if necessary. Ask different groups to share what they have found. Check if they have got the correct answers. 3.Further reading. (5 minutes) (1)Discuss in groups. What language does Coco speak? (2)Lead students to understand the new word “even”. (3)Share their results from the discussion. ☆Cultural supplement: Present the language culture in Singapore. Build up students' pride in Chinese culture. Step 4 Post-reading (9 minutes) 1. Ask students to introduce something about Pauline and Peter according to the table in 1c. 2.Finish the task in 1d. Ask students to compare themselves with either Pauline or Peter. Ask if they have the same hobby as them and what other hobbies or talents they have. Encourage them to think about their own good points to make a new friend. 3.Free talk. Think about the following questions. Q1:Who do you want to make friends with,Pauline or Peter? Why? Q2:What's your best friend like? Encourage students to use the key sentence structures from the text to express their own opinions about friends. Step 5 Homework (1 minute) Required: Read the article in the Reading Plus part (P75),and finish the tasks.
