It was a sunny August day on a San Diego beach. My best friend, Sam Hanivan, who had learned swimming for four years, and I got ready for a day of boogie boarding (滑浪). Little did we know that this seemingly ordinary day would become an extraordinary event in our memories forever. On that day Sam Hanivan and I almost lost our life.
Our excitement was fueled not only by the hope of enjoying the beach but also by the interesting eight-hour car journey before our arrival.
On arriving, we found lifeguards (救生员) here and there, but we just didn’t think much about that. With boogie boards in hand, Sam and I raced toward the water, unaware of the challenges awaiting us. As ten-year-olds, our only concern was to have fun and enjoy the moment. We spent the day riding the waves, swimming back and forth, our laughter carried far by the ocean wind.
Sam and I shared not only the excitement of the waves but every snack break and moment of rest. However, as the day progressed, unlucky signs appeared.
The weather took a turn, and the ocean waves became choppy (汹涌的). Despite the changing conditions, we continued to enjoy the sea until the playful waves transformed into dangerous huge ones.
At that time, Sam and I found ourselves far from the safety of the beach. Frightened and anxious, we fought against the waves, trying our best to get back to the beach, but the more we fought, the more we were forced into the ocean. In an attempt to get out of the danger, we almost ran out of our energy. At the same time, Sam was comforting me, despite his own danger.

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, and washed and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be the first to wish a happy New Year to his family. He turned up at every door of the house, and shouted the words of “Happy New Year” in an excited voice. After a quick breakfast, he hopped along the street like a happy bird, greeted and repeated the words to those he met.
When he came back, his father gave him 50 dollars, saying he could buy whatever he had been wishing for. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some interesting books that he had seen at the bookstore located near the river through the city. He thanked his father and danced out of the house again with a light heart, intending to buy those books.
As he ran down the street, he noticed a poor family, the father, the mother, and three children shivering with cold in the winter wind. “I wish you a happy New Year,” cried Edward, as he was happily passing on. The man took a look at the happy boy and shook his head sadly.
Edward stopped and said, “It seems that you do not belong to this country.” The man again shook his head, a confused expression flashed over his face, for he could not understand or speak English.
But the poor man pointed to his dry mouth, and to the children with hungry looks, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”
Edward quickly realized that these poor people were in distress (贫困).

Several years later, the boss promoted (提升) Bob to senior manager, but John remained a common worker, John could not take it anymore, so he told the boss that he wanted to give up the job. He also thought that the boss did not value the hardworking members of staff but only promoted those who said nice things to please him.
The boss knew that John had worked very hard all these years. He thought for a moment and said, “Thank you for your criticism (批评), but I hope you will do one more thing for our company before you leave. And perhaps you will change your decision and choose to continue working here.”
John agreed. The boss asked him to go and find someone selling watermelons in the market. John went out and returned soon. He said he had found a man selling watermelons. The boss asked about the price. John shook his head and went back to the market to ask that man and returned to tell the boss.
The boss told John to wait a second, and then he called Bob into his office. He asked Bob to do the same task. Several hours later, Bob returned and told his boss that there was only one man selling watermelons in the market. The price was $1 per kilogram. One could buy watermelons cheaply if he bought more than 10 kilograms. The seller had about 300 melons, the average (平均) of which weighed about 5 kilograms. They were of good quality, fresh, red and juicy, and were transported from the south two days before.

It was a Monday morning. David, whose school fees (学费) were continuously supported by an old woman anonymously (匿名地), got up late, He got dressed and rushed to the bus stop for his last school bus, his mind full of the day’s schedule. The streets were busy with people heading to work. As he was waiting for the school bus, he noticed a woman worriedly searching through her bag.
“Excuse me,” David called out, “do you need some help?” The woman looked up anxiously, “I’ve lost my wallet, and there is something important in it.”
Without a second thought, David offered to help. They retraced (折回) the woman’s steps, looking through the sidewalk carefully and asking passersby if they had seen a wallet. At this moment, David’s bus arrived. Looking at his watch, the school bus and the anxious woman, he decided to continue helping her find the wallet despite the pressure of his own schedule.
Luckily, several minutes later, they found the small wallet under a car. The woman’s face was a picture of relief (宽慰) as she carefully cleaned the dirt on it. “I can’t thank you enough,” said the woman, opening the wallet and pulling out a piece of paper. “It includes my grandmother’s wish to find the poor student who has been supported by her. Addo Elephant National Park, a sanctuary (庇护所) for numerous African elephants, is home to both forest elephants, which can weigh up to 4 tons, and the larger bush elephants, weighing between 6 and 8 metric tons. One summer day, a baby bush elephant found itself trapped in a muddy pit (坑), unable to escape. The sight was heartbreaking for anyone who witnessed it.
The elephant herd, known for their tight- knit bonds, did their best to assist the struggling baby elephant. They attempted to help by spraying water around the edges of the pit, hoping it would make it easier for the baby elephant to climb out. Despite their efforts, the situation remained terrible.
The park, lacking fences or borders, made any human rescue attempt risky, as it meant getting close to the massive, protective adults.
Undiscouraged, the dedicated park staff, known for their expertise and commitment, took immediate actions. They quickly arrived at the scene and began digging around the pit to create a safe escape route for the distressed baby elephant.
Unfortunately, this well- intentioned plan did not go as hoped. Instead of helping, the situation worsened. The anxious herd huddled(挤成一团)close r around the baby, pushing the baby further into the water- filled pit.
With time running out and the tension rising, the rescuers had to think of a new strategy quickly and creatively. In an impressive display of quick thinking and courage, the rangers decided on an adventurous plan.
They used their park vehicles to gently drive the adult elephants away. These adults, weighing several tons each, presented a significant risk. But the rangers’ determination was firm.
Miraculously, the adult elephants, sensing the urgency and understanding the humans’ intentions, moved away, providing the rescuers with the critical opportunity they needed.

On a calm weekend, I went to the countryside to visit my grandmother. Her house, located in the heart of a village, was a harbour of quietness away from the noise of city life. As I approached her home, the familiar sight of her welcoming smile warmed my heart.
My grandmother, a woman of great wisdom and strength, had always been the backbone of our family. Her hands, though weathered with time, were skilled in the art of growing food from the soil. Her garden was her pride and her love for the land.
Upon my arrival, I noticed the wide area of her garden, awaiting the plants that would bring forth a harvest. I eagerly offered to help her with the planting, but she looked at me with concern. Her eyes reflected a mix of affection and apprehension. "Are you sure, my dear?" she asked with doubt. "It's hard work, and I don't want you to tire yourself."
Determined to assist her, I insisted on learning the skills of gardening. She saw the determination in my eyes and, with a gentle nod, agreed to teach me. Under her careful teaching, I began my learning, eager to absorb every piece of knowledge she had to offer.
The process of planting required patience. My grandmother showed me how to prepare the soil, the proper depth to dig, and the correct spacing between each seedling(幼苗). She explained the importance of each step. She taught me every single detail.
At first, my movements were clumsy(笨拙的), and I feared I might be more of trouble than a help. But my grandmother's encouragement was firm. She guided my hands, correcting my technique with a gentle touch and kind words. Slowly, I began to find my rhythm (节奏), and my action became more fluent.

Jeremy was a considerate boy. His days were filled with a sense of responsibility, whether it was spending time playing with his baby sister Suzy, assisting Mom with cooking dinner, or drying dishes for Dad after supper.
But Jeremy’s favorite job was feeding Fletch. Fletch was the family cat. With its beautiful tiger-striped coat, Fletch was more than just a pet; it was a loyal companion and provided emotional value during his stressful days. Their bond was unbreakable.
When Fletch was hungry, it had a unique way of conveying its needs to Jeremy-by bumping (碰) his head on Jeremy’s legs. And Jeremy would immediately attend to his friend. To him, sharing household chores (家务活) and caring for family members were not just tasks; they were filled with joy.
One evening, as the family gathered for dinner, little Suzy realized she had lost her favorite doll. Her tears were about to interrupt the peaceful atmosphere of supper. Mom, who was always caring, gently tasked Jeremy with finding the doll in the backyard. Without hesitation, Jeremy sprang into action, determined to bring a smile back to Suzy’s face.
Under the dim (朦胧的) moonlight, he searched carefully and eventually found the bright red doll among the grass. With a smile on his face, he returned hurriedly, bringing a sense of relief to the entire family.
However, Jeremy’s joy was short. As he prepared for bed, he realized that Fletch was missing. It was certainly a restless evening for Jeremy as he anxiously searched every corner of the house for Fletch. Starting in the bathroom, he quickly moved on to the hallway, his heart pounding with each step. Finding no sign of the cat, he ran down the stairs, his eyes scanning every inch of the house, and panic set in as he searched everywhere, only to discover the back door wide open. Tears welled up in his eyes. The thought that Fletch was nowhere to be found hit him crazily.

It was the first time the three girls, Maya, Sarah and Mary had met each other. And they would share the same apartment for the coming university life. They moved into the apartment on the afternoon two days before the kick-off ceremony of the new term. The apartment was near their campus. It was perfect for them, which was furnished in a simple style, neat and clean. The three girls went through inspecting the apartment. There were three bedrooms, a shared kitchen and a small living room. It was time for them to pick their bedrooms. “Anyone of them is fine with me,” Maya said softly. So they chose their respective bedroom randomly. They went to their respective rooms and began to unpack.
Sarah and Mary were excited and happy to leave independently away from their parents. However, Maya was to some extent homesick. From her suitcase, Maya carefully removed a framed (框架) photograph of her family. Maya put the photograph at her bedside, next to the reading lamp. Staring at her parents’ smiling faces in the photo, Maya couldn’t help crying. She missed her parents so much. Sarah and Mary wandered in. “How about going out and getting some dinner?” “I’m ready,” Maya said, quickly wiped the tears on her face and forced a smile.
The three of them had dinner at Pizza Hut, not far from their apartment building. During dinner they chatted about their backgrounds and lives, but they didn’t express freely in their conversation. They were three strangers, cautiously getting to know one another. May a showed little appetite to the pizza. “My mom’s pancakes are always mouth-watering,” she said.

参考答案
1.Suddenly, we saw a lifeguard at a short distance. “Don’t Fight The Waves, Swim Diagonally.” Following the lifeguard’s instructions, we changed our course, swimming diagonally rather than fighting the waves head on. To my delight, Sam, my loyal friend, remained by my side. He kept encouraging me to hold on and his encouragement became my lifeline. More importantly, Sam helped lift me up timely whenever he saw me beginning to sink. As a great swimmer, he could have got out of danger by himself much earlier. However, he kept me company all the time and we were swimming neck and neck. To be frank, without Sam’s company and help, I would have given up a long time ago. Thank Goodness we finally got to the shore.
Lying on the beach, we were still suffering from the shock. What a narrow escape from death! Our determination and persistence paid off in the end! Lying on the beach, we had no strength to stand up. “Thanks a lot! You have saved my life!” I told Sam gratefully. “It’s nothing. That’s what friends are for,” Sam replied with a smile. Never will I forget that day in my life. Sam’s heroic and selfless behaviour transformed an ordinary beach day into a proof of true friendship. In the face of danger, Sam chose to stay by my side, a decision that went beyond the call of friendship.

With a look of deep respect, the headmaster said, “I am proud of what David, you and your grandmother did. I promise to help you find the student you are looking for.” Surprisingly, with the information on the paper, they found that the student being supported was exactly David. With excitement, the woman requested to meet David again to deliver this last gift in person.
The headmaster led the woman to David’s classroom to give him the gift. The headmaster knocked at the door and went in with the woman. “Excuse me,” the headmaster began, as the students turned their curious gazes towards him. “I have someone very special with me who has a story to share with you all.” With a smile, the woman explained the whole unexpected event in detail. Turning to David, the woman said, “You are a kind boy who deserves all.” Applause for the turn of kindness broke out in the classroom.

It emitted a small trumpet, a sound full of gratitude and relief, as the rangers gently lifted it out of the pit using a combination of manpower and machines. The little one, now free from its muddy prison, immediately ran towards the waiting herd. The adult elephants, visibly relieved, welcomed the baby with a circle of trunks in a communal embrace, their tight-knit bond again visibly displayed. It was a heartwarming scene that emphasized the deep familial ties elephants share.
But the story didn’t end there. The rescue operation became a testament to human and animal cooperation. The rangers, witnessing the profound affection within the herd, felt a renewed sense of purpose. They used this experience as a learning opportunity, refining their rescue techniques to be even more effective in the future. The baby elephant soon rejoined its herd, and together they disappeared into the vast openness of Addo Elephant National Park. Finally, my grandmother agreed to let me do the planting alone. I became more careful. I recalled the skills my grandmother had taught me, including the methods of digging, planting vegetable seedlings and watering them. Happily, I made it and my grandmother praised me. Each seedling I planted was a promise of growth, and a symbol of hope for the future. The sun bore down on us, and sweat dropped from my forehead, but the satisfaction of our labor was a reward beyond measure.
When I left that evening, I looked back at the garden. I was so proud to see the seedlings I had grown myself. I knew the day I spent with my grandmother would remain in my heart forever. I helped my grandmother, and in the process, I received a gift far greater than I could have imagined. I had learned the art of gardening. More importantly, I had deepened my bond with my grandmother, a connection that would flourish like the seeds we had planted together. I look forward to gardening with my grandmother again in the future.

With the adults now at a safe distance, the rangers swiftly moved in to rescue the baby elephant, which weighed over 200 pounds.

When they returned to their apartment, Mary was too excited to sleep. When Sarah knocked at her door, Mary was lying in bed, thinking about the future. “Shall we do something to cheer Maya up?” Sarah asked.
