“Hello. You are you and I am I. We are people, also known as humans. This makes us different from most of the things on Earth.” This fairly straightforward observation is the opening spread of Like, written by Annie Barrows. It establishes a somewhat odd yet matter-of-fact tone with a young boy addressing the reader.
Matters get more quizzical-or philosophical (哲学意义的), if you prefer — on the following spread, which carefully thinks about the ways in which people are different from one specific thing on Earth, “We are not at all like tin cans. We are not shaped like tin cans. We cannot hold tomato sauce like tin cans. If you open up our lids, nothing good happens. We are not at all like tin cans.” The target audience will no doubt be amused, as was I, and perhaps reassured.
Like next matches people with the swimming pools, “We are a little bit more like a swimming pool than a tin can. We have water and chemicals and dirt inside us. But unlike a swimming pool we don’t have people splashing around inside us.” Mushrooms, we learn, differ from tin cans and swimming pools by being alive, and by growing and reproducing-human traits, too! Mushrooms, however, don’t have mouths and brains. But wait: Hyenas have all that. They run around really fast, like we do... But hyenas don’t say words. They don’t tell stories. They don’t get embarrassed, even when they’re caught eating something off the ground.
Where to go from there? “Look at all these people, the text exclaims over the illustration full of people of seemingly every size, shape, color, age and means of mobility. They are not exactly like us. But they are more like us than they are different.”
“I am more like you than I am like most of the things on Earth, the narrator concludes. I’m glad. I’d rather be like you than a mushroom-an appealing and inarguable understanding.”
4. What does the underlined word “quizzical” mean in the second paragraph?
A. Definite. B. Consistent. C. Unusual. D. Ambiguous.
5. According to the passage, which of the following is most like humans?
A. Hyenas. B. Tin cans. C. Mushrooms. D. Swimming pools.
6. How is the writer’s idea mainly developed in the passage?
A. By describing in details. B. By making comparisons.
C. By analyzing causes and effects. D. By presenting problems and solutions.
7. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. An animal encyclopedia. B. A story entry.
C. A philosophical textbook. D. A book review.
C 5. A 6. B 7. D

根据文章第一段“This fairly straightforward observation is the opening spread of Like, written by Annie Barrows. It establishes a somewhat odd yet matter-of-fact tone with a young boy addressing the reader. (这个相当直接的评论是安妮·巴罗斯写的《Like》的开篇。它建立了一种有点奇怪但实事求是的语气,一个小男孩向读者讲话。)”和下文““We are not at all like tin cans. We are not shaped like tin cans. We cannot hold tomato sauce like tin cans. If you open up our lids, nothing good happens. We are not at all like tin cans.” (“我们一点也不像锡罐。我们的形状不像锡罐。我们不能像装罐头一样装番茄酱。如果你打开我们的盖子,不会有什么好事发生。我们一点也不像锡罐。”)”可知,书的开头一章,叙述方式有些不寻常,结合本句后面作者将人与锡罐比较,以此说明人的本性。所以推测本句意为,“在接下来的章节,事情变得更加不寻常”,由此可知,quizzical意为“不同寻常的”。故选C。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段““We are not at all like tin cans. We are not shaped like tin cans. We cannot hold tomato sauce like tin cans. If you open up our lids, nothing good happens. We are not at all like tin cans.” (“我们一点也不像锡罐。我们的形状不像锡罐。我们不能像装罐头一样装番茄酱。如果你打开我们的盖子,不会有什么好事发生。我们一点也不像锡罐。”)”和第三段“Like next matches people with the swimming pools, “We are a little bit more like a swimming pool than a tin can. Mushrooms, however, don’t have mouths and brains. But wait: Hyenas have all that. 故选A。
We are not at all like tin cans. We are not shaped like tin cans. We cannot hold tomato sauce like tin cans. If you open up our lids, nothing good happens. C
If you’ve noticed you’re getting less while your bill almost stays the same, it’s not just you. “Shrinkflation” — reducing a product’s size or quantity while keeping its price stable — is showing up in shops around the world.
As the global economy struggles with inflation (通货膨胀), rising material costs and higher human cost, consumers are bearing the increasing production prices. “Consumers are more likely to notice how their purchases are affecting their wallets than the amount of product lost when sizes decrease,” says Mark Stiving, the chief pricing educator at Impact Pricing. As a result, companies use shrinkflation to make consumers “less painful”.
Yet even as shrinkflation comes with inflation, the problem doesn’t end after inflation does. Once the new sizes are on the shelf, they are likely to stay that way. “Shoppers don’t have a choice. They have to adapt themselves to the changes,” adds Stiving. There are rare exceptions, but companies generally take the opportunity to get more profits.
For many companies, shrinkflation seems to be unavoidable. In food industry, for example, where customers are highly sensitive to price, lifting prices might make customers jump ship to another brand. But facing the continuous inflation, the companies have to do something to maintain their profits. Introducing small reduction in the size of their goods should enable them to improve profits while keeping their prices competitive. But once customers notice the change, they might feel fooled, leading to a loss of trust and confidence.
Some grocers are using stickers to remind shoppers of shrinkflation, but still, it’s a tough hit to the bottom line — especially because the price of products generally doesn’t fall as inflation does. Consumers may need to examine both price and size sensibly as they shop, and make sure they don’t fall into the trap of that super size on the shelf.
8. Why does shrinkflation make consumers “less painful” according to Stiving?
A. Shrinkflation reduces human cost.
B. Shrinkflation raises purchasing power.
C. Consumers become more aware of size.
D. Consumers experience little increase in cost.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The concerns of shoppers. B. The interests of companies.
C. The impact of shrinkflation. D. The phenomenon of inflation.
10. What is the author’s attitude to the shrinkflation in paragraph 4?
A. Favorable. B. Objective.
C. Dismissive. D. Unclear.
11. What should consumers do according to the last paragraph?
A. Draw a bottom line. B. Put warning stickers.
C. Choose smaller packs. D. Make a conscious decision.
D 9. C 10. B 11. D
根据第二段中“‘Consumers are more likely to notice how their purchases are affecting their wallets than the amount of product lost when sizes decrease,’ says Mark Stiving, the chief pricing educator at Impact Pricing. As a result, companies use shrinkflation to make consumers ‘less painful’.(Impact pricing的首席定价教育专家Mark Stiving表示:‘当尺寸减小时,消费者更有可能注意到他们的购买对他们钱包的影响,而不是产品损失的数量。’因此,企业利用缩水式通胀让消费者‘不那么痛苦’)”可知,相比于商品尺寸的减少,消费者更关注价格的波动,因此,缩水式通货膨胀来使消费者成本几乎没有增加,从而“不那么痛苦”,故选D。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段内容,结合前两句“Yet even as shrinkflation comes with inflation, the problem doesn’t end after inflation does. Once the new sizes are on the shelf, they are likely to stay that way.(然而,即使缩水式通胀伴随着通胀而来,问题也不会在通胀结束后才结束。一旦新尺码上市,它们很可能会一直保持这种状态)”可知,本段主要讲述缩水式通货膨胀的后续影响,即产品的尺寸一旦减少,后续可能很难再变回来,故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“For many companies, shrinkflation seems to be unavoidable. But once customers notice the change, they might feel fooled, leading to a loss of trust and confidence.(对许多公司来说,缩水式通胀似乎是不可避免的。
根据最后一段中“Consumers may need to examine both price and size sensibly as they shop, and make sure they don’t fall into the trap of that super size on the shelf.(消费者在购物时可能需要理智地检查价格和尺码,并确保自己不会落入货架上超大尺码的陷阱)”可知,本段提到消费者在购物时需要明智地考虑价格和尺寸,确保自己不会陷入价格陷阱。
D
Thanks to in-depth reporting by The Wall Street Journal, we now know that Facebook has long been aware its product Instagram has harmful effects on the mental health of many adolescent users. Young girls, in particular, struggle with their body image thanks to a constant stream of photos and videos showing beautiful bodies that users don’t think they can attain.
While the information the journal covered is essential and instructive, it does not tell the whole story. Deep down, this is not an Instagram problem; it’s a people problem. Understanding that distinction can make the difference between a failed attempt to contain a teen’s interest in an addictive app and successfully addressing the underlying problem leading to mental distress caused by Instagram.
Critics were quick to shame Facebook for sitting on the data and not releasing it to researchers or academics who asked for it. Others criticize the social media giant for not using the research to create a safer experience for its teen users. The anger, while understandable, is misplaced.
While I’m reluctant to defend Facebook, I’m not sure it’s reasonable to blame the company for refusing to give data that would hurt its business. Have you ever binge-watched a Netflix series? I assure you it wasn’t a healthy endeavor. You were inactive, likely did nothing productive, mindlessly snacked and didn’t go outside for fresh air. It is an objectively harmful use of time to stare at a TV or laptop for a full weekend. Should we respond by shaming Netflix for not alerting us to how damaging an addictive product can be?
While it’s reasonable to say Instagram makes esteem issues worse, it is almost impossible to believe it causes them in the first place. You create your own experiences on social media. For the most part, you choose which accounts to follow and engage. If you’re already vulnerable to insecurities and self-sabotage (自损) — as many teens are — you will find accounts to obsess over. And this isn’t a new phenomenon.
Before social media, there were similar issues fueling self-esteem issues. Whether the target be magazines, movies or television shows depicting difficult-to-attain bodies, there has been a relatively steady chorus of experts noting the damage new media could cause young viewers.
Self-esteem issues have an underlying cause — one that’s independent of social media use. Instagram merely enhances those feelings because it provides infinitely more access to triggers than older forms of media. It’s more worthwhile to address those underlying factors rather than to attack Facebook.
12. What does the author think of the criticisms against Instagram?
A. They address the mental pain caused by Instagram.
B. They are not directed at the fundamental problem.
C. They are only based on the data released by Facebook.
D. They are effective in changing teens’ interest in addictive apps.
13. Why is Netflix mentioned?
A. To defend why Facebook is to blame.
B. To show Netflix does more harm to teens.
C. To suggest the critics’ remarks are not to the point.
D. To compare the criticisms against it and Facebook.
14. Why is the Instagram problem essentially a “people problem”?
A. People have a tendency to feel insecure online.
B. People are keen on making up their self-profile.
C. It is human nature to get addicted to social media.
D. Users decide on their experiences on social media.
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The fierce criticism faced by Facebook.
B. The harmful impact of Instagram on teenagers.
C. The alarming online habits of teenagers worldwide.
D. The root of mental sufferings caused by Instagram.
B 13. C 14. D 15. D
根据文章第三段“Critics were quick to shame Facebook for sitting on the data and not releasing it to researchers or academics who asked for it. Others criticize the social media giant for not using the research to create a safer experience for its teen users. The anger, while understandable, is misplaced.(批评人士很快就指责 Facebook搁置数据,不向要求提供数据的研究人员或学者提供数据。其他人批评这家社交媒体巨头没有利用这项研究为青少年用户创造更安全的体验。这种愤怒虽然可以理解,但却不恰当)”可推知,作者认为对Instagram的批评并没有指向根本问题。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“While I’m reluctant to defend Facebook, I’m not sure it’s reasonable to blame the company for withholding data that would hurt its business.(虽然我不愿意为Facebook辩护,但我不确定指责该公司隐瞒可能损害其业务的数据是否合理)”及“Have you ever binge-watched a Netflix series? I assure you it wasn’t a healthy endeavor. You were in active, likely did nothing productive, mindlessly snacked and didn’t go outside for fresh air. It is an objectively harmful use of time to stare at a TV or laptop for a full weekend. Should we respond by shaming Netflix for not alerting us to how damaging an addictive product can be?(你曾经疯狂地看Netflix的电视剧吗?
根据文章第五段“You create your own experiences on social media. For the most part, you choose which accounts to follow and engage. If you’re already vulnerable to insecurities and self-sabotage (自损) — as many teens are — you will find accounts to obsess over. And this isn’t a new phenomenon.(你在社交媒体上创造自己的体验。在大多数情况下,你可以选择关注和参与哪些账户。如果你已经很容易受到不安全感和自我破坏的影响——就像许多青少年一样——你会找到一些让你着迷的账户。这并不是一个新现象)”可知,Instagram问题本质上是“人的问题”是因为用户在社交媒体上决定自己的体验,不是Instagram产生了这些问题。故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第二段“Deep down, this is not an Instagram problem; it’s a people problem.(实际上,这不是Instagram 的问题;这是人的问题)”及最后一段“Self-esteem issues have an underlying cause — one that’s independent of social media use. Instagram merely enhances those feelings because it provides infinitely more access to triggers than older forms of media.(自尊问题有一个潜在的原因,这个原因与社交媒体的使用无关。Instagram只是增强了这些感觉,因为它比旧的媒体形式提供了无限多的接触触发器的途径)”并结合全文内容可知,作者认为Instagram对于青少年用户产生心理影响,是其诱发精神紧张,放大自身的自尊问题所致。由此可知,文章主要论述了Instagram造成精神痛苦的根源。故选D项。

7 Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. An animal encyclopedia. B. A story entry.
C. A philosophical textbook. D. A book review.
