Accidents are so rare that flying is much safer than car travel. But that doesn’t stop many of us from feeling panic when we are moving at 500 miles per hour, 33,000 feet above the ground. Not being at the controls makes us feel a bit helpless. That’s when the negative thoughts begin to appear, and deepen until, even in a very safe place, we suddenly feel panic. Many of us can go along doing ordinary things and suddenly be overcome by fear. The feelings are real, and it requires a calming force to steady our emotions. In panic mode, the senses are hypervigilant(高度警觉的). Every sound and movement feels like a threat. The passenger responded accordingly, jumping at every sound or even at the slightest turbulence(气流). That’s what happened recently to an old woman flying on an airline. Floyd Dean-Shannon noticed the woman’s distress. As a flight attendant, he has plenty to do during a flight. However, he paused and spoke gently to the woman. Floyd calmly explained what the noise outside the plane was and that it was normal. As the woman began to calm down a bit, Floyd sat down in the aisle beside her and held her hand. He told her she was safe. He made her feel safe. He sat with her through the entire flight. At one point, Floyd learned it was another passenger’s birthday, so he led the plane in a song to celebrate — another way of making the woman feel safe by distracting her from her fears. He stayed by the woman’s side until it was time to land. We all have friends who become distressed, who over-worry, who may struggle with some internal demons that keep them from enjoying life. Like Floyd, we can be open enough to see and to be there. We don’t have to be professional; we just need to be friends. 24. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 1? A. To explain why people panic on a plane. B. To prove that flying is safer than driving. C. To show why traveling by plane is popular. D. To introduce factors that affect flight safety. 25. How did Floyd react to the woman’s behavior? A. He was too busy to care for her. B. He tried to comfort her patiently. C. He turned to other passengers for help. D. He stopped her in time and educated her. 26. Why did Floyd sing a song on the plane? A. To celebrate his birthday. B. To wish for a safe landing. C. To reduce the woman’s fears. D. To create a lively atmosphere. 27. What can best describe Floyd? A. Honest and modest. B. Friendly and creative. C. Brave and caring. D. Helpful and considerate. C Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation? UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much more complex than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation and support, passing around necessary nutrition (营养) “depending on who needs it”. Nutrition is shared through miles of underground fungi (真菌) networks, making sure that all trees in the forest system give and receive just the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks in our brains, and when one tree is destroyed, it affects all. Simard talks about “mother trees”, usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important nutrition to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “mother trees” without knowing these highly complex “tree societies” or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing the chances of survival for the whole forest. “We didn’t take any notice of it.” Simard says sadly. “Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance.” If we could put across the message to the forestry industry, we could make a huge difference towards our environmental protection efforts for the future. 28. What does the underlined sentence “the opposite is true” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Trees compete for survival. B. Trees protect their own wealth. C. Trees depend on each other. D. Trees provide support for dying trees. 29. Why are “mother trees” very important? A. They are the largest in size in forests. B. They pass on nutrition to young trees. C. They seem more likely to be cut down by humans. D. They know more about the complex “tree societies”. 30. What can we infer from the text? A. Underground fungi networks help forests survive. B. Forests can’t continue growing without mother trees. C. Trees in a forest get nutrition depending on their ages. D. The forestry industry develops environmental protection. 31. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Old Trees Communicate Like Humans B. Young Trees Are in Need of Protection C. Trees Are More Complex Than We Think D. Trees Contribute to Our Society D Do you ever get the feeling that you’re being watched? Well, you might be right.  According to a study published in Nature on June 23, astronomers have found that 1,715 stars have had a direct view of Earth since humans have been here. In order to do this, scientists used a previous method that looked for life on other planets. But instead, they changed the method so it could try to determine (确定) what places could see us. The team looked at 331,312 stars within 326 light-years of Earth, with each light-year equaling 9.4 trillion kilometers. Out of all those stars, only 1,715 of them could see Earth within the last 5,000 years, with an extra 319 stars that will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years. “When I look up at the sky, it looks a little bit friendlier because it’s like, maybe somebody is waving,” said Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University, US, and the study’s lead writer. If a planet circling around one of those 1,715 stars is home to advanced life, they could easily see that there is life here because of the oxygen on Earth. If that didn’t give it away, then the radio waves we have sent out into space would also be an indicator (标志). In fact, human-made radio waves have already traveled through 75 of the closest stars on Kaltenegger’s list. Why haven’t we heard from anyone yet, then? It takes a long time for messages to travel between star systems. By the time a message could be received, that advanced civilization (文明) would probably not exist anymore.  Alan Boss, a scientist at the Carnegie Institution for Science in the US who wasn’t part of the study, wrote in an email that this long time would limit the chances for different life to exchange “emails and TikTok videos”. “So we should not expect aliens (外星人) to show up anytime soon,” Boss said. 32. How many stars will be able to see us in the next 5,000 years? A. 319.       B. 1,715.       C. 1,396.       D. 2,034. 33. What does the underlined word “that” in paragraph 6 refer to? A. A circling planet. B. Advanced life. C. The oxygen on Earth. D. man-made radio waves. 34. What could prevent humans from exchanging messages with aliens according to Boss? A. Human-made radio waves cannot travel far.  B. Aliens don’t really exist on other planets.  C. Humans and aliens can’t understand each other.  D. It takes a long time for messages to travel.  35. What is the purpose of the text? A. To raise readers’ interest in aliens.    B. To present new findings published in a study. C. To research the relationship between planets. D. To discuss if there’s advanced life on other stars. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Tips for cooking on a Tight Schedule From my experience, there are three main reasons why people don’t cook more often: ability, money and time. 36 Money is a topic I’ll save for another day. So today I want to give you some wisdom about how to make the most of the time you spend in the kitchen. Here are three tips for great cooking on a tight schedule: Think ahead. The moments when I think cooking is a pain are when I’m already hungry and there is nothing ready to eat. So think about of the coming week. When will you have time to cook? Do you have the right materials ready? 37 Make your time worth it. When you do find time to cook a meal, make the most of it and save yourself time later on. Are you making one loaf of bread? 38 It takes around the same amount of time to make more of something. So save yourself the effort for a future meal. 39 This may surprise you, but one of the best tools for making cooking worth your time is experimentation. It gives you the chance to hit upon new ideas and recipes that can work well with your appetite and schedule. The more you learn and the more you try, the more ability you have to take control of your food and your schedule. Hopefully that gives you a good start. 40 and don’t let a busy schedule discourage you from making some great changes in the way you eat and live! A. Try new things. B. Ability is easily improved. C. Make three or four instead. D. Understand your food better. E. Cooking is a burden for many people. F. Let cooking and living simply be a joy rather than a burden. G. A little time planning ahead can save a lot of work later on. My 12-year-old niece was staying with us for a little while.
