Today we have another topic: “Four common British expressions.” Now, before we get started, make sure you connect with me on all my social media which is right here. You can subscribe to my YouTube. You can also like me on Facebook. And for my Chinese followers, I have my Weibo account as well. Four Common British Expressions: “A piece of cake.” And this is very similar to “Easy-peasy, lemon squeezy,” which we’ve discussed in a former video. And basically, it means very easy. So I might come out of an easy exam saying, “That exam was a piece of cake.” “Break a leg!” It actually looks really rather cruel, but I promise you it's positive. And “Break a leg!” means “Good luck!” So before a race, before a job interview, before a test, instead of saying “Good luck!” I might say “Break a leg!” “It cost an arm and a leg.” And this basically means something was really expensive. If I say, “My bag cost an arm and a leg,” I mean it cost a lot of money. “To call it a day.” And this means “to end a task”. So, for example, “I’m feeling a bit tired. I think I’ll call it a day.” That means “I think I'll stop here. Let’s finish.” Thank you so much for watching this program of “Four Common British Expressions.” I hope you like it, and I hope you've learned something. 21. How can Chinese listeners connect with Lucy? A. With Wechat B. On Facebook C. Through Weibo D. By YouTube. 22. When John went to an English Speech Competition, you should say “________” to him. A. Break a leg! B. It cost an arm and a leg. C. To call it a day D. A piece of cake. 23. What does he/she mean when the teacher says “Let’s call it a day.”? A. He/She will stop that day. B. Class is over. C. He/She feels tired. D. It is daytime. B When I was a kid, my mother used to tell me Chinese folk(民间的)stories before bedtime. My mother is an immigrant(移民)from China. She told me those stories so that I wouldn't forget the culture that she had left. Even though I hadn't ever experienced that culture at first hand, she wanted me to remember it. Of all her stories, my favourites were about Sun Wukong, the monkey king who had many superpowers. Finally, though, I moved on to other kinds of heroes. When I was in the fifth grade, I bought my first American comic book(漫画书). Afterwards Superman, Spider-Man, and Captain America took the place of Monkey King in my heart. I became crazy about comic books. I loved them so much that I went on to work towards a career in comics. Today I am a professional graphic novelist(图画小说家). My best-known book is American Born Chinese, published in 2006. Monkey King is one of my main characters, but the book isn’t a direct mixture of my mother’s stories. Instead, I invited Monkey King into my story so that I could talk about the uneasiness of growing up as an Asian American. The character I knew from my childhood expressed his emotions wholeheartedly. I needed him to emote on my pages. For research, I tracked down an English translation of Journey to the West, the centuries-old Chinese classic(经典作品)that first told the monkey king’s story. As I read it, I realised that American superheroes hadn’t taken the place of Sun Wukong in my heart after all. Superman, Spider-Man, and Captain America were simply Western expressions of everything I loved about the monkey king. The monkey king’s story has lasted for centuries and travelled across cultures. Journey to the West is the best example of timeless. My mother now has Alzheimer’s. She’s forgotten all of the stories she used to tell me, but I remember. In many ways, I’ve built my whole career on those moments before bedtime. With every comic book I create, I am trying to relive the wonder I felt when my mother told me the stories of Sun Wukong. 24. What did the author’s mother expect him to do? A. Earn a living by writing. B. Keep their Chinese culture. C. Remember stories she told him. D. Experience Chinese culture first hand. 25. What can be learnt about the book American Born Chinese? A. It encourages people to try their luck abroad. B. It is a best-seller among American born Chinese. C. It is partly inspired by the story of Sun Wukong. D. It reflects the growing pains of American children. 26. Why did the author start to read Journey to the West? A. To study it for the creation of his own works. B. To compare Western classics with Chinese ones. C. To learn the meaning of life in Journey to the West. 3 D. To connect American superheroes with Sun Wukong. 27. What is the last paragraph mainly about? A. The approach to creating comic books. B. The author’s worry about his mother. C. The author’s memory of his childhood experiences. D. The impact of Sun Wukong on the author’s writing. C If you’ve ever watched an elephant eat and drink with its trunk(象鼻), you may think it’s simple. A new study by research at the Georgia Institute of Technology shows that elephant trunks are pretty cool but also complicated(复杂的). In fact, this research is among the small amount of new scientific information on elephants published in more than 100 years. And the research shows that elephants use several skills to move things. When elephants pick up foods, they use different movements, Schulz, the study’s lead researcher, says. They can also clean up objects. They can use the ends of their trunks to gently pick small objects. And they can use suction(抽吸)to pick up foods of different sizes. “They can get a tortilla(玉米饼) without ever breaking it,” says Schulz. When elephants drink, they enlarge the inside of their trunk to store water before they drink it. And elephants may have many more skills up their trunks — Schulz just hasn't worked them all out yet and needs to put more effort into it. To study elephant trunks, Schulz spent a lot of time working with an elephant named Kelly at Zoo Atlanta in Georgia. He chose her over two other elephants there because “she is amazing,” Schulz says. “She likes exploring with her trunk, and she really likes something called ‘enrichment.’ That means we could work out interesting ways for her to find and get her food.” Learning about the ways Kelly’s trunk works is interesting and important work, especially because no other researchers have found out about such things, Schulz says. It could also help engineers understand how to build more useful robots to help doctors do surgery(外科手术). And with some elephant populations in Asia and Africa quickly falling, Schulz sees the work as a way to help save these animals. “We’re using science to encourage people to learn more about elephants,” Schulz says. “And the more animals are studied, the more likely they are to be protected.” 28. What has the present study found out about elephant trunks? A. The reasons for their big size. B. The ways in which they work. C. The differences in their structures. D. The changes in them over the years. 29. What do we know about Schulz’s study on elephant trunks? A. It is carried out by Zoo Atlanta in Georgia. B. It is the first in the field to be finished. C. It tries a new way to study them. D. It needs to be worked on further. 30. Why was Kelly chosen for the study? A. She liked trying new things. B .She had a special sense of food. C. She had been in a similar study before. D. She looked cleverer than other elephant. 31. What does the last paragraph focus on? A. The necessity of protecting elephants. B. The importance of studying elephant trunks. C. The modern way of treating injured elephants. D. The difficulty of learning about elephant trunks. D During the last twenty years there has been increasing worry about the quality of the environment. Along with air and water pollutants, noise pollution has been recognised as a serious pollutant. As noise levels have risen, the effects of noise have become more obvious. Noise is described as “unwanted sound”. Causes of noise pollution include traffic, rock bands, barking dogs, television, and noise from neighbours, voices, alarms, and boats. Studies show that over forty per cent of Americans are troubled at home or lose sleep because of noise pollution. Noise has bad effects on people and the environment. Noise causes hearing loss, interferes (干扰)with human activities at home and work, and is in various ways dangerous to people's health. When we think, talk, listen to music, or sleep, we need quiet. Even low levels of noise can be annoying. Sudden increases in volume(音量)can make sounds annoying. The quieter the background is, the more penetrating a noise can be. Noise can also make instructions or warning unclear, resulting in accidents. Louder noise can cause more problems. Continued stress caused by living in noisy conditions can lead to high blood pressure, which is the main cause of some illnesses. Listening to loud sounds at levels above eighty-five decibels(分贝)can lead to hearing loss. Noise can cause the heart rate to quicken, breathing to increase, and the digestive system(消化系 统)to slow down. Local government has the responsibility to fight noise pollution. For example, it can control the speed of trains through their community. On the other hand, responsible individuals will never make noise pollution wherever they are. 32. What does the underlined word “penetrating” in paragraph 4 mean? A. High and exciting. B. Deep and relaxing. C. Loud and annoying. D. Clear and comfortable. 33. Which of the following can be a result of noise pollution? A. Fast breathing. B. Slow heart rate. C. Low blood pressure. D. Fast digestive system. 34. What can we learn from the last paragraph? 4 A. A responsible government cares for the environment. B. Joint actions are needed to control noise pollution. C. People making noise pollution should be punished. D. Detailed plans help create a noise-free environment. 35. What is the text mainly about? A. Facts about noise pollution. B .Measurement of noise levels. C. Bad effects of noise pollution. D. Community reactions to noise. Apart from regular(常规的)study, there are a few other interesting ways to learn English. Lucky for me, it was a day off, so I was thinking about getting my bank work out of the way. The bank person, an elderly gentleman with a white beard, was, as usual, curt (简短失礼的,简略的) to my polite “Happy New Year.” He nodded and I sat in front of him. Minutes passed but nothing happened. Then very uncertain and embarrassed, I put my form and booklet (小册子) in front of him. He was busy filling up entries in his register (登记簿). After a few minutes he took my form and from his cabinet he took out a very thick file from which he started filling in my details. I sat there wondering why we had computerized banking if we were still filling in forms and registers. After waiting for a few more minutes, in which I showed all signs of being impatient, I asked him if my work was done. The moment I uttered the words, I felt as if a bombshell had fallen on him. He shouted, “Nothing is done, it will take time!” Just then I saw his morning cup of tea which had been lying there for the last ten minutes, untouched. The tea had turned almost cold while he was doing his work. Suddenly I felt what this man, who had been working at this counter for the last God-knows-how-many years, must be feeling when customers like me come who are always in a hurry to get their work done. 第一节 根据文本内容从方框中选择恰当的词并用其正确形式填入文本图示中,每词限用一 次,有两词为多余选项 (共 10 小题;每小题 1 分,共 10 分) On New Year’s Day, I went to get my bank work 66 and said “Happy New Year” to the bank person 67 . 根据文章第一段“Lucky for me, it was a day off, so I was thinking about getting my bank work out of the way.(幸运的是,那天是休息日,所以我想把银行的工作做完。)” 根据第一段“The bank person, an elderly gentleman with a white beard, was, as usual, curt (简短失礼的,简略的) to my polite “Happy New Year.”(银行的工作人员是一位留着白胡子的老先生,他像往常一样,对我礼貌的“新年快乐”很敷衍。)” 根据第一段“It was New Year’s Day, the first day of the year. Lucky for me, it was a day off, so I was thinking about getting my bank work out of the way.( 这是新年,一年的第一天。 根据第三段“Then very uncertain and embarrassed, I put my form and booklet (小册子) in front of him.(然后非常不确定和尴尬,我把我的表格和小册子放在他面前。)” 根据第四段“The moment I uttered the words, I felt as if a bombshell had fallen on him.(我说出这句话的那一刻,我觉得好像一颗重磅炸弹落在了他身上。)” 根据第四段“After waiting for a few more minutes, in which I showed all signs of being impatient, I asked him if my work was done.(等了几分钟后,我表现出了各种不耐烦迹象,我问他我的工作完成了没有。)” 根据第五段“Just then I saw his morning cup of tea which had been lying there for the last ten minutes, untouched.(就在这时,我看见了他早上喝的那杯茶,它已经在那儿放了十分钟了,一动也没动。)” 根据第五段“Suddenly I felt what this man, who had been working at this counter for the last God-knows-how-many years, must be feeling when customers like me come who are always in a hurry to get their work done.(突然间,我明白了这个在这个柜台工作了不知多少年的人,面对像我这样总是急着把工作做完的顾客时的心情。)” 根据第五段“Suddenly I felt what this man, who had been working at this counter for the last God-knows-how-many years, must be feeling when customers like me come who are always in a hurry to get their work done.(突然间,我明白了这个在这个柜台工作了不知多少年的人,面对像我这样总是急着把工作做完的顾客时的心情。)” 根据文章第四段“After waiting for a few more minutes, in which I showed all signs of being impatient, I asked him if my work was done. The moment I uttered the words, I felt as if a bombshell had fallen on him. He shouted, “Nothing is done, it will take time!”(等了几分钟后,我表现出了各种不耐烦的迹象,我问他我的工作完成了没有。我说出这句话的那一刻,我觉得好像一颗重磅炸弹落在了他身上。他喊道:“什么也做不了,这需要时间!”)”可知,当遇到作者这样的人来办理业务的时候,他一定觉得很焦虑或者紧张,又来了一个人,没有耐心,只会督促他先办理他的业务。故答案为He must be feeling so worried/upset/anxious/nervous that “here comes another person who will push me for doing his work first.” 77. 根据文章最后一段“Just then I saw his morning cup of tea which had been lying there for the last ten minutes, untouched. The tea had turned almost cold while he was doing his work. Suddenly I felt what this man, who had been working at this counter for the last God-knows-how-many years, must be feeling when customers like me come who are always in a hurry to get their work done.(就在这时,我看见了他早上喝的那杯茶,它已经在那儿放了十分钟了,一动也没动。他干活的时候,茶几乎都凉了。突然间,我明白了这个在这个柜台工作了不知多少年的人,面对像我这样总是急着把工作做完的顾客时的心情。)”可知,当作者看到桌子上工作人员的茶都冷了的时候,作者突然就理解了工作人员的心情。作者有可能会让工作人员先喝茶。而工作人员也会解释自己为什么会先处理自己手头的事。故答案为I might say to him, “Sir, you please have your tea; I am not in a hurry.” He might look up at me for the first time, give me a rare smile and say, “Thanks, but it is an everyday affair with me; you are not in a hurry but somebody else will come who will be in a hurry.” and then continue his work at hand. 78. I would learn to be more communicative, understanding / thoughtful / empathetic and friendly with people who help me with my work, putting myself in others’ shoes and be thankful that they are there for me, not taking their work for my convenience for granted.
