T: What did you do during the weekend?
Ss: I did my homework/read books/watched TV...
2. Show some pictures of famous classic books on the screen and ask students if they know them.
T: Look at these pictures. Do you know these books?
Ss: Yes, they are...
T: Have you read any of them? Why or why not?
Step 2: Pre reading
1. Present the title of the passage “It is still read and loved” and ask students to predict what the passage might be about.
T: Look at the title. What do you think this passage will talk about?
Ss: Maybe it will talk about a book that is still popular and loved by people.
2. Teach the new words and phrases: sense, influence, review, make sense
T: Let's learn some new words and phrases before reading. Look at this word “sense”. It means “感觉;意义;判断力”. For example, “a sense of humor” means “幽默感”. Can you make a sentence with “sense”?
Ss: I have a sense of direction.
T: Good. Now let's learn “influence”. It means “影响;作用”. “Have an influence on” means “对...有影响”. Who can give an example?
Ss: My parents have a great influence on me.
T: Well done. Next is “review”. It can be a noun or a verb. As a noun, it means “评论;回顾;复习”. As a verb, it means “审查;评论;复习”. Can you say a sentence with “review”?
Ss: I need to write a review of the book.
T: Excellent. The last one is “make sense”. It means “有意义;讲得通;言之有理”. For example, “What you said makes sense.” Do you understand?
Ss: Yes.
Step 3: While reading

Ask students to read the passage quickly and match the main idea with each paragraph.
Paragraph 1: The story of Tom Sawyer.

Paragraph 3: Mark Twain's life.
Paragraph 4: People's opinions on Tom Sawyer.
After a few minutes, check the answers with the students.
2. Scanning (10 minutes)
Ask students to read the passage carefully and answer the following questions:
Who wrote Tom Sawyer?
When was Tom Sawyer written?
Why is Tom Sawyer still read and loved today?
What kind of person was Mark Twain?
Have students work in pairs to discuss the answers and then share them with the class.
3. Language points
Explain the key language points in the passage, especially the present perfect passive voice.
For example, “The book has been translated into many languages.” “Has been translated” is the present perfect passive voice. We use it to talk about an action that started in the past and continues to the present, and the object of the action receives the action. Can you give another example?
Ss: The house has been cleaned.
Step 4: Post reading
1. Group discussion

How do you think classic literature can influence our lives?
Encourage students to express their opinions freely and have a group representative report the discussion results to the class.
