On Sunday, the 71-year-old from the Netherlands, ran a marathon in 2hr 54min 19sec to become the fastest septuagenarian (70-90 年龄组) in history. A few days later, when the Times catches up with him, his achievement is still sinking in. “I only started jogging at 36 because my doctor told me I had high cholesterol (胆固醇),” he says. “But last year I ran 7,242 kilometres, which is more than double what I did in my car.” But the secrets of his success might surprise you。 “Most runners train too hard. I do a lot of my training with groups who run very slowly. And then I build on these basics with some faster interval training.” Schoonbroodt often runs at 9-or 10-minute mile pace, far slower than the 6.38min / mile he ran for 26.2 miles to set his world record, but he says the crucial thing is that he listens to his body. “A lot of people follow a training plan or coach and push on even when their body is saying: ‘No, this is not a good day to do it.’ But if you go out the door and just do what you feel, it’s easier to keep running and stay injury-free.” Being a late bloomer (大器晚成), he believes, has actually helped him because his ego (自我意识) never had to worry about chasing faster times of his youth. “Because I started so late, I missed my best years. But that’s no problem. Everything is still new to me.” Schoonbroodt, meanwhile, has no plans to put his feet up. “My next marathon is in two and a half weeks, on an old Roman road built 2,000 years ago,” he says, the excitement obvious. It will be his third in 2023. And with that he is off. After all, the quest (追求) for another sub-three-hour marathon waits for no man. Not even one who is 71. 1. What message does Schoonbrodt’s story carry? A. It is never too late to run. B. More haste, less speed. C. Time waits for no man. D. An earlier bird catches the worm. 2. What is the secret behind Schoonbrodt’s success? A. He competed with slower runners. B. He made full use of the intervals. C. He trained in line with his condition. D. He ran faster in the races than in trainings. 3. Why is being a late bloomer helpful to Schoonbrodt? A. He can draw lessons from other runners. B. He has no youthful success to think back to. C. He can equip himself with new running skills. D. He has a strong desire to make up for the lost time. 4. How does Schoonbrodt talk about his next marathon? A. He is unsure of winning it. B. He is eager to participate in it. C He has no plan to enter for it. D. He will not run it in three hours. B The California sea otter (海獭), once hunted to the edge of extinction, has staged a thrilling comeback in the last century. Now, scientists have discovered that the otters’ success story has led to something just as remarkable: the restoration of their declining coastal marsh (沼泽) habitat. Elkhorn Slough, a coastal marsh within Monterey Bay, had been experiencing severe damage. The root cause was a growing population of shore crabs, which fed heavily on the marsh plants, weakening the structural integrity of the habitat. Coastal marshes like these are not only natural defenses against storm waves but also serve as important carbon storage areas and water-cleaning systems. The conservation-driven comeback of the sea otter has been crucial. California’s coastlines were once alive with sea otters. Sadly, they were nearly wiped out at the hands of fur traders. In the 1980s, conservation efforts aided these otters in re-occupying large areas of their former range. Now, Elkhorn Slough has the highest concentration of sea otters in California, with a population of about 100. By naturally feasting on crabs, the otters have helped a significant regrowth of plant life. Brent Hughes, a scientist working alongside Angelini, led a three-year study. Their findings were clear: in areas with sea otters, crab numbers fell markedly. This led to a resurgence in plant growth, which in turn stabilized the soil and lowered the rate of soil washing away. As the sea otter population continues to restore, their positive impact on coastal ecosystems is likely to increase. It not only showcases the sea otter as a central species - a species that has a significant effect on its natural environment - but also highlights the essential nature of top predators (捕食者) in preserving ecological harmony. “My honest reaction was - this could become a classic in the literature,” says scientist Lekelia Jenkins. She reveals marsh restoration also helps people by reducing flooding. “Suddenly, sea otters go from just cute things we like to something that can protect our livelihoods and our properties.” 5. What change did the disappearance of sea otters bring about? A. Fewer predatory crabs. B. More coastal plant life. C. Better water-cleaning effect. D. Worse coastal ecological balance. 6. What does the underlined word “resurgence” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Barrier. B. Advancement. C. Destruction. D. Revival. 7. What is the author’s purpose in quoting Lekelia Jenkins? A. To highlight the importance of coastal marshes. B. To introduce a new research study on sea otters. C. To demonstrate the practical benefits of sea otters. D. To emphasize the need for increased conservation efforts. 8. What message is conveyed from sea otters’ impact? A. The necessity for controlled hunting. B. The interconnectedness of the ecosystem. C. The drawbacks of wildlife reintroduction. D. The need for human intervention in nature. C Black Myth: Wukong is one of the most highly anticipated Chinese video games ever, a premium title with a blockbuster- worthy budget that emphasizes the country’s push to become a global cultural power. The game’s release is a landmark moment for China’s gaming industry. It is considered China’s first “AAA” title, a big- budget, global game with sophisticated gameplay and advanced visuals. Within hours of its release, there were more than 1.5million people playing it on Steam, making it the No.1 game on the online platform. Black Myth: Wuhong is adapted from the16th- century Chinese classic novel Journey to the West. The game’s main character is inspired by Sun Wukong, also known as the Monkey King, who battles opponents with a magic iron bar. China’s video game industry is dominated by titles played on smartphones, not big- budget console (主机游戏) or PC games that are released globally. However, Black Myth: Wukong marks a shift as it is being initially released on Sony’s PlayStation 5 and personal computers. In recent years, the industry in China has faced significant challenges. The government has implemented strict regulations to control gaming due to concerns that children could become addicted and negatively influenced. For example, Beijing has introduced rules that prohibit young people from playing games online on school days and impose strict time limits on gaming during weekends and holidays. But the game’s launch lit up national pride. One Chinese media outlet noted that the game’s default language is Chinese and added, “It feels so good.” The global interest in the game also highlighted China’s push to exercise its “soft power.” The novel that it is based on is considered one of China’s four great classics. The game also depicts important cultural landmarks throughout China. “The success of Black Myth: Wukong is not only a victory for the gaming industry, but also an important milestone in the overseas expansion of Chinese culture,” Yangcheng Evening News, a state- owned newspaper, wrote in an article. 9. What do we know about Black Myth: Wukong? A. It focuses on basic gameplay elements. B. It shifts China’s gaming towards consoles. C. It features a world born of pure imagination. D. It acts as a landmark for adapting Chinese myth. 10. What challenge has China’s gaming industry faced recently? A. Insufficient budget for game development. B. Increasing popularity of smartphone games. C. China’s lack of emphasis on cultural soft power. D. Government measures to restrict youth gaming time. 11. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. The game targets Western audience with its cultural themes. B. The game is a big step in showing Chinese culture worldwide. C. The game’s success is a way to boost China’s economic growth. D. The game strengthens national pride by highlighting Chinese culture. 12. What can be the best title of the text? A. Black Myth: Wukong as a Cultural Ambassador B. The Impact of Gaming Industry on China’s Youth C. The Impact of Gaming Industry on Chinese Culture D. As any eco-expert will tell you the best thing you can do is buy less to begin with. That means shopping for quality items that will stand the test of time, but also learning a few key skills so you can repair those items as needed rather than sentencing them to life in an already-overflowing landfill. It’s also helpful to customize (改制) secondhand items which might not be exactly the right size or a little out of date. ____16____ Beyond the functional benefits, mending is about using what you have, embracing imperfections, fixing what’s broken, and rejecting the idea that newer is better. The other aspect of mending is mindfulness. You focus on the task at hand and use your creativity to make your clothes unique. It’s meditative (冥想的), slow work. ____17____ And an added bonus: It’s sustainable. If you are interested in sewing and mending, it is the perfect time to learn the new skill, which can especially have a positive impact on the world. A. Why should you learn to mend? B. This is a means of making a living. C. It’s productive, and deeply satisfying. D. Purchasing secondhand clothes is a good choice. E. Why have people stopped mending their clothing? F. He had a big lawn and wanted to plant some colorful flower bushes, herbs and crops. One day, Henry drove to the store to buy more gardening tools. While passing the neighborhood primary school, he noticed a boy being pressed against the wall by his classmates. “You’re such a loser, Lucas!” the kids shouted at him. The boy was close to tears, trembling and not saying a word. Greatly annoyed, Henry parked the car on the side of the road and approached them. “Why are you bullying this young boy? Do you want me to call your teachers or your parents? Leave him alone!” he shouted. Frightened by Henry, the boy’s classmates ran away immediately. Henry then asked the poor boy, “Are you all right?” The boy nodded and thanked Henry for help. After taking a good look at the boy, Henry realized that he was his neighbor Lucas, so he offered to take Lucas home after a quick stop at the store. While at the store, Lucas discovered Henry’s love for gardening. They talked about his crops and how gardening made the old man happy. On the drive home, Henry decided to ask Lucas about his classmates. “Why are they treating you like that? Do they always give you a hard time?” he asked the boy. “Yes. Maybe because I don’t like the same things as they do, they keep calling me a loser.” he sighed. “Have you ever asked your parents or teachers for help?” Henry added. “I think it’s better to avoid trouble if possible.” Lucas shook his head helplessly. Listening to Lucas’s answer, Henry recalled his days as a teacher. If he were still on the job, he would never allow such a thing to happen to his students. Looking at this poor child, Henry was determined to do something. 注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Paragraph 1: The next day, Henry invited Lucas to visit his garden. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: One month later, cornered by his classmates once again, Lucas decided not to keep silent any more. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2022级高三第一学期月考(二)考试试题 英语 本试卷共四个部分; 考试时长 120 分钟, 卷面满分 150 分。 1.
