When I was in my first year of high school,I had a terrible time when every area of my life
was a disaster.I felt so hopeless and alone that I thought everything was impossible
On one such day,I was walking from class across the school to catch the school bus home,
with my head down, fighting tears of total hopelessness, when a young man came down the
sidewalk toward me.Though I had never seen him before,I did not want him to see that I was in
such low spirits,so I tumed my head away and hoped to hurry past.I thought he'd walk on by,but
高一英语试卷第3页(共10页)
he moved until he was directly in front of me,waited until I looked up,and then smiled.
Looking into my eyes, this stranger spoke in a quiet voice:"Whatever is wrong will pass.
You're going to be OK,just hang on."He then smiled again and walked away.
I can't explain the effect of that man's unexpected kindness and caring! He gave me the one
thing that I'd lost completely-hope.I looked for him in our school to thank him,but never saw
him again.
That was thirty years ago.And I've never forgotten that moment.Over the years, whenever I
see someone who is in trouble,I will always think of that young man and try to give a flash of
hope in the dark wherever I can.I carry things for people when they are too heavy for them, sit
with naughty babies in the waiting room while their mothers are busy,or talk to tired couples at
the checkout line or it could be anything. If you kecp your head up,your heart will show you the
place that needs hope.

The computer is a powerful tool. With it,teachers can improve the classroom-experience in a
variety of ways. But misuse of the computer will probably result in disadvantages
To investigate the way technology is being used in our school district,I recently spoke with
Jeanine Lowell, who teaches social studies at Lake Town Middle School.Mrs.Lowell informed
me that computers have helped to increase students'motivation and prepare them for life in a
technological society."These kids are probably going to be using some kind of computer system
高一英语试卷第4页(共10页)
when they graduate from high school."I.owell noted."It's important that we provide a proper
introduction to them in the classroom."Lowell also observed that the computers have made it
casier to promote different areas of learning.so that students can work on a project or topic that
relates to more than one subject.
With all of these benefits, however, come a few shortcomings.Although Mrs.Lowell has
nearly wallpapered her room with wamnings that state:"The computer is NOT A TOY",not
everyone in the class agrees with this idea. Some students get easily distracted (by the
internet and are quite good at making it look as if they are doing work when they are really
checking their email or watching videos."You've got to he three steps ahead,"she told me,"if
you want to stay on top of what they're actually doing on the computer."
Some schools use some type of blocking soflware to ensure that students cannot access
improper sites at school.More complex programs use a server-based,network-wide program
instead of software that runs on personal computers.Rescarch has shown that in a way these
server-based blocking programs provide better sccurity, because some students can disable the
software on a personal computer.
However, there is no replacement for the watchful eye of a good teacher like Jeanine Lowell.
There are also no electronic cure-alls for any of education's many challenges.Technology is a
useful tool, but that is all it is:a tool.

o
A post warning signs throughout the classroom

People who often eat nuts appear to live longer, according to the latest study of its kind. The
findings, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggested the greatest benefit was in
those eating them on their daily dict.
Eating nuts was linked to a healthier lifestyle including being less likely to smoke or be
overweight and more likely to exercise. The British Heart Foundation said more research was
needed to prove the link,"While this is an interesting link,we need further.research to make sure
if it's the nuts that protect heart health,or other sides of people's lifestyle"
The study followed nearly 120,000 people for 30 years. The more regularly people ate nuts,
the less likely they were to die during the study.People eating nuts once a week were 11%less
likely to have died during the study than those who never ate nuts.Lead researcher Dr.Charles
Fuchs, from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Flospital, said,"The
most obvious benefit was a decrease of 29%in deaths from heart disease, but we also saw a
significant reduction-11%-in the danger of dying from cancer."
They suggest nuts are lowering cholesterol(胆固醇)and insulin resistance(胰岛素抗性),
Nuts contain-unsaturated fat(不饱和脂肪),protein(蛋白质)and several kinds of vitamins and
minerals and they can take the place of snacks like chocolate bars, cakes and biscuits.
Victoria Taylor, senior expert at the British Heart Foundation, said,"This study shows close
connection between regularly eating a small handful of nuts and a lower risk of death from heart
disease."Choosing plain,unsalted foods rather than sweet,salted,or chocolate-covered will keep
your salt and sugar intake down.
32.According to the passage, what kind of people benefit most from eating nuts?

My Days in Wild Sancturay
Last summer,I had the incredible opportunity to voluntecr at a wildlife sanctuary(野生动物

animals, particularly those affected by human activities such as poaching and habitat destruction.
66他们的主要且标之一是一日这些动物速复.就把它1重新引入野外。
During my time there,I was introduced to a young leopard named Zara.Zara had been found
injured and malnourished(营养不良的)in a nearby forest..It was heartbreaking to see her in such
a state, but the dedicated staff worked tirele'ssly to nurse her back to health. They provided her
with nutritious food and a safe environment to recover.Over the weeks,I witnessed Zara's
transformation from a weak and frightened animal to a strong and confident predator.
Another memorable experience was helping with the release (of a family of baboons
that had been rescued from captivity. These baboons had spent most of their lives in small cages
and were not accustomed to living in the wild. The sanctuary staff prepared them for release by
teaching them essential survival skills and gradually introducing them to the natural environment.
Seeing the baboons finally free and adapting to their new life was a truly rewarding moment.
The sanctuary also places a strong emphasis()on community education. They organize
regular visits from local schools and communities to teach people about the importance of
biodiversity and conservation.One day,we had a group of schoolchildren visit,and I helped
explain how each species plays a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. It was inspiring to
see the children's eyes light up with curiosity and understanding.
69.By the end of my stay.I realized the profound impact that these conservation (
efforts have not only on the animals but also on the people who learn about the importance of
protecting our planet.Every small action counts,whether it's rescuing an animal,educating a child,
